'18 TN OT Max Wray

Butch has always made Tennessee a priority. He also takes care of the program and doesn't curl up in the fetal position when his first choices don't materialize. Kind of coach we've needed. Gary Patterson of TCU was the revisionist choice of many handwringers on here when Butch was hired. He was passed over for Kiffin, and was too established to be an option when Dooley was hired. Built his program on 3 stars (Texas quality) after he took over for Dennis Franchione. That hasn't changed exponentially since TCU joined the Big 12. He identifies his type of athletes and redshirts them for a season. He lands the occasional 4 star or 5 star but the CORE is PATTERSON type players. That wouldn't have differed in Knoxville. Everyone follows the narrative "gotta do this" or "you can't do that" til someone flips said narrative. Butch will always recruit the big time stars, and when we have epic seasons, the program will start recruiting itself. While building up to that, he has to go with his method that has already transformed our athletic base. Following a message board blowhard's hypothetical fancy would cost him his job. Bet on yourself...others will lose you money.

CTV, give Butch a call and tell him how you feel about his recruiting so far? I'm sure he'll be just thrilled to hear your opinion.

Chaney and Pittman are very well acquainted. The reason Pittman got the job at UT was strictly due to Chaney. Their relationship goes back to the NFL so Chaney once told me. I'll ask the next time I speak with him i. The next day or so.

I guess role reversal but Pittman is the reason Chaney got hired at UGA. UGA went after Enos/Pittman and Pittman was the only one allowed to talk to other schools. So Pittman pointed toward Chaney.

I take it you didn't watch the 35 minute interview like I did. UGA has a "Pre-Physical Therapy" program, which is what Max said he's interested in. The "Pre-Physical Therapy" program is a 15 hour elective that is part of the "Exercise and Sport Science" major. I don't think he's planning on being at UGA for 7-8 years. He said one reason he chose UGA is because of Pittman's reputation of putting guys in the NFL. Sounds like his plan is to get drafted in four or five years.
I just looked this up in the UGA catalog. They don't even offer a major in Pre Physical Therapy. What you wrote above is true about the 15 hour elective.

But

Earlier you said Wray wanted to go to UGA because they offered a "great Physical Therapy program". How can they have a great program when they don't even offer a major in that field? Don't get me wrong, I don't have a problem with you. Wray claiming he chose UGA because of a 15 hour elective is somewhat funny though.

Complaining ab a star avg in August is dumb

I know you guys want to look at the bright side and all that, but it is absolutely valid to look at star averages in August. Sure, CBJ has a strong history with getting in on prospects before they blow up. We can probably assume that a few of our currently committed players are underrated and will end up at solid rankings after their senior seasons. Sure, we will probably gitshirt a fair number of the players that fail to look better during their senior years. That gives me some confidence that we can improve significantly later in the cycle. But there are two main reasons why this is a very bad start for us:

1. Gitshirting has a cost. It's still a net win to replace a player with someone better, but there is a long term cost involved that is usually only avoided because of how quickly coaching changes happen or because it was done by someone like Saban who just has such a great track record that recruits look past it.
2. Even if CBJ is well above average in evaluation AND we gitshirt 5-10 current commits, we are behind the teams that we need to beat by a significant margin. There is probably not much hope of catching them at this point.

Some on this board have invented this fantasy that if we win, we will magically have a top 5 class. That just isn't going to happen. Squeezing into the top 10 is about our best case scenario as of now, and that's a bad spot to be in when it's only August.

When it comes to recruiting, has Butch let you down yet?

Hasn't let me down. As a matter of fact, he has done better than I ever imagined he would.

I would hope so.... He's a great recruiter than some of us on here want to believe. Just because he misses out on some instate prospects, doesn't make him a bad recruiter. Can't get everyone.

I think it's a little silly to compare average points and rankings when those same points and rankings can change dramatically in a single camp. Ultimately we won't know about the quality of this class until probably 2019. While it is fun to argue about how many 4*s can dance in the head of a pin, great athletes are great athletes. We can win with the guys we have over the last three years. I don't see a reason for all the angst over marginal differences between athletes whose future is as uncertain as they are today. The player himself is far more than his rating as a sixteen year old.

He sounds very committed to Georgia at this point. If Trevor Lawrence commits to Georgia you can forget about Wray flipping.

Couldn't give an ish less what Wray does, we got bigger fish to fry than this kid. Go be a Dawg Max, won't matter one iota to our program either way quite honestly.

Except when people start crying about his better little brother following him to UGA.

Admit I'm ignorant about his little brother. Hate losing out on very talented players but if he's like his older brother and hellbent on going to Athens then see ya to him too. That's a long time down the road, confident our staff finds other equivalent players and perhaps then some. Jmho.

If days of difference in the timing of an offer to a 2018 guy was the issue, when said offer was like 18 months before NSD, then that is either just a ridiculous degree of butthurt or there is more to the story. If it is the butthurt, I doubt he would last at UT anyway...those guys have always found the exit. If it is not butthurt, then it may have been an evaluation and conclusion on the Wray family's part that may or may not survive the next year. Meaning, that Kirby and his staff may not look so shiny by season end, while Butch and staff may look much more so.

Probably makes sense to not worry too much about Max or his brother, and just see what happens. Of course the freakers gonna freak either way.
