'18 TN RB Master Teague

I honestly could not pull for the Vols if Meyer was coach. He us a despicable human being in my opinion. The Michael Taylor story alone is reason enough for that. I hope Butch wins big here, mainly because I like what he is about.

Solid post. Hope Butch wins big as well. IIRC Taylor was a VOL commit at one point right? What was the controversy? do not recall details.

You are genuinely going to write a 500 word post saying why I'm wrong no matter who I name.
You probably got me there lol

But comparing, contrasting, and debating coaching resumes is a staple offseason discussion topic. And I do think there are a few guys in the discussion. I assumed you had thick enough skin to at least answer the question. I guess that old adage about assuming came true here 😂

So much salt in this thread, dear lawd. Cant really blame the kid for taking the OSU offer... that's an easy decision for most recruits, unfortunately, even for the ones from TN...Put up a good season and maybe we start winning those battles again.

Kirby, we have always lost a certain percentage of kids every year. It was just the fact we did not have as much top flight talent in TENNESSEE then that other teams were after. As the quality and quantity of players from Tennessee increases we will lose more. But remember Dante Hightower out of LEWISBURG, tons of kids out of Memphis. We have lost kids to USCw, UGA, AU, Ole Miss for years. We are not going to get 100% of the top kids in TN every year. Players from every state go to other states, look how many get poached out of FL, GA, TX, and LA every year. Losing an occasional player is going to happen. Now when you have the year it looks like UGA is having this year whiffing on almost every one of the big time instate players that is a big deal then. Just be glad TN is now producing players good enough for the best teams across the country to want, that way when we keep them, we know they are quality recruits. GBO VFL

There really is no good answer..Everybody I might name has question marks. By most quantifiable data, you are right, nobody current besides Saban is better. I don't want him as my coach for reasons that are not based on data. So to me there are a lot of coaches out there that while they may not be as successful numbers wise, they are more palatable to me as an emotionally invested fan.

I think there are some guys you can throw in the conversation with him. None of them have won multiple national championships, of course, and some of them haven't won one at all yet. They've all got some points working against them when you compare their wins and championships on paper, but there are arguments to be made for guys like Harbaugh, Jimbo, Dabo, or maybe even Chris Peterson depending on what their teams do in 2017 IMO.

I totally get people calling him a scumbag and saying they wouldn't want him here. I just think it's kind of head-in-the-sand not to throw in the caveat that he's a scumbag who is also really good at getting results.

Which makes him a scumbag IMO. Anything beyond that is irrelevant.

Wins and losses are part of the equation, but my desire for the athletic program is to have one I can be proud of. That encompasses a lot of things on and off the field.

But that's me.

I understand your opinion and mostly agree with it. I'm somewhere between your opinion and some of the others. I do think he is a good coach but I also think he has been fortunate to be in good situations that have helped him. When he was at Utah he had Alex Smith. Was Mullen with him then? When he took over at Fla they were loaded and he had Tebow and Mullen. When they left his offense suffered then he got "ill". Then he took over a loaded OSU and had Herman. Not exactly faced a lot of adversity there.

What I really don't get though is why you would spend such an inordinate amount of time defending him?

That's common on this site though. People love to tear down our coach and program and worship others like Harbaugh and Meyer etc.

Oh and Meyer is a scumbag.

I think Dabo is another scumbag, and I think Harbaugh is a whackjob. I would love to have Chris Peterson.

I see it more as defending reality, TBH. Pretending that Meyer is some terrible coach makes our fanbases look like mouthbreathers who are incapable or unwilling to look at things objectively.

But mostly, it kinda annoys me when people throw shade at kids like Teague and say things like "he was conned" or "he bought into a fraud." If was someone like Smart, who hasn't proven anything yet and was trying to use a preacher to pull him in, I'd get it. But when you're talking about one of 4 active CFB HCs who has won a NC and one of 2 who has won multiple NCs, I think it's obvious the kid has some idea of what he's in for.

FTR, I'm mostly just talking about guys based on their resume of what they've done, not whether I'd want them at UT or not (I personally can't stand Dabo and wouldn't be surprised if Harbaugh has already or will in the future commit a murder).

Unfortunately, I think a lot (maybe the majority) of top flight CFB coaches are scumbags or whackjobs. It's an extremely high pressure job that has requires crazy hours and commitment and rewards results above all else. CFB isn't really an environment that's conducive to nurturing wholesome, well adjusted head men. A lot of the ones it does bring about just either happen to also be control freaks or just aren't as good as the crazy guy/guy who's great at bending all the rules.

It's kind of like how they say that CEO positions tend to draw a disproportionate amount of people with sociopathic tendencies.

Nobody is saying Meyer isn't a good coach. The thing with Teague is he made it seem like faith and integrity were an integral part of his recruitment. So, for him to choose OSU makes it seem like he was duped. Now, if he were basing his decision on a winning coach/program, then it would be a different story.

If you go by what his criteria was for choosing a school then he was conned. Ohio mistake didn't meet many of his criteria.

I haven't seen anyone claim he is a terrible coach. Most of his criticisms were directed at his character. I personally think his best attribute is moving into ideal situations and then getting out when it gets difficult.

We heard all of that from a 3rd party though. We don't know what we're the integral parts for him, really. Just what someone who fancies himself a family friend assumed was.
