'19 CA QB JT Daniels (Georgia commit)

It would benefit UT for JG to be a really good QB. I'm sure both Chaney and Pruitt hoped, probably even thought he was going to be a steady hand last year. It was logical that he would be the guy based on the roster.
Reality is they pulled him 4 games in because they had no other option but to try something they wernt comfortable with and the doubts started as early BYU. Those same doubts were revisited again against Vandy and IU at the end of the season.

I dont know if JG can take the next step. To date there is no consistency from him outside being inconsistent. UT needs better play at QB. He may get the nod again but hopefully hes running out of second chances. In other words, if cant get it done they should have more options to move on this time.

Assuming we don't land JTD, I would think JG starts the season but the leash would be really really really really short. I do believe JG has the potential to be a solid SEC QB and we have seen games where he played like one. With that said, I'm personally really high on HB. I think that kid has the IT factor and if JG does that Jekyll and Hyde stuff again this year I believe we are in good hands with HB. Plus, we have the team to support a young QB this year with our OLine (hoping Cade can play) and our Defense (I expect us to be even better in year 3 under Pruitt), especially if someone outside of Palmer steps up on the WR corps and we get something out of the other LB spot next to Henry T.

I don’t worry About that. I worry more about his fumbles
You hit on it already, but I worry most about his confidence and his body language. Some guys, good or not, exude confidence in the guys around them. A real leader does that. That is my biggest knock on JG. I don’t know if he can consistently do that. He HAS to be confident. The other 10 on Offense will follow good or bad.

It's hard for me to blame him for either of those games last year.

The offensive line was flat out terrible against Georgia state. Only allowed 3.0 years per rush, and 4 sacks and I'm fairly sure the interception he through was also because he got hit as he threw. That's unacceptable and had nothing to do with him. The defense also gave up way too many points.

BYU literally wasn't his fault at all. He did what Chaney called, he was efficient when he was called to pass. They had like 17 seconds to go the entire length of the field, and without the worst blown coverage of all time, we win that game. He doesn't play CB as well as QB.

People will always find a way to blame him for everything. There was plenty of blame to go around those first two games, and he certainly is at least partially responsible for it, but there was way more problems than just him. He showed he was clearly our best option last year. Might change this year, who knows. Guess we'll find out
You can say he was our best option. I don’t have a problem with that at all, but come on. I could easily make the argument that coverage never should’ve had the opportunity to be busted if he had been better that game. After he threw that pick in the 3rd quarter we coached around him the rest of the way. So I’ll give you that the coaches were at fault for giving him too much too quickly and trusting their team with a qb who was not ready again.
This is the game changing pick. The circles are open and he throws to DWA. This is not efficient: A8F3F424-4775-4CBF-BB8F-152DB5367A93.jpeg

He missed so many wide open guys in that game it wasn't even funny. Should have been a 35 or 38-3 type score. Our defense dominated that game.

Exactly. And that’s my biggest problem with the discussion about JG. He leaves so many points off the board. The “he’s the best we got” crew for some reason gets pissed when they use stats as their friend and I point out that he should’ve had 10 more TDs than he did last year. He had 16 tds, why not 26? He probably should have had 3 more Tds that night against BYU. I think we can be critical of him and still hope he figures this stuff out. However, I don’t think it’s wrong to be skeptical of his play.
Maybe he’ll play better if the stadiums are empty. I don’t know .

He was not good at BYU. Even his td pass to JJ should have been a pick

Serious question. What are you using as proof that this guy is automatically better than JG?

I don’t know that. But I think it is reasonable to assume he has a much higher chance of being great. Imo we have seen JG and he isn’t great. No more proof needed. Nothing against him. He’s just not a great Qb. Many people thought JT was elite coming out of high school. I am not alone in this. He showed a lot imo in a freshman year. Made some great throws and showed enough to think that w good coaching and experience he can be a first round pick caliber talent. JG is just not that.

That's one play. Ty Chandler fumbled in that game as well. Despite both of those plays we had a chance to win. Never said he was amazing in that game, or any game, but you can't just rewrite history and pretend that he didn't give us a chance to win the game. That's just pure JG hate.

Sure there are great success stories. I’d be curious to see the hit/miss rate of transfers. Wonder if it’s higher, lower and the same as regular HS guys.

I’m assuming it’s higher but I bet not by as much as one might think
Not sure what the rates are, but there are enough recent success stories, and not just moderate success, either, to completely dismiss the idea that because JTD is transferring means he isn't any good. Three of those guys I named were Heisman Trophy winners and the #1 overall pick in the NFL Draft playing for their second team, while the fourth is the co-favorite in 2020 and a likely top-5 pick in the 2021 draft.

Point is, being a bad football player isn't the sole reason for transferring, and there are plenty of recent examples of why that is the case. In fact, those four players and the teams that took them fared equally, or better than the player that blocked their path and the team they transferred from, to begin with.

My real concern is how many L's is this staff willing to take committing to JG as the starting QB. Would he get pulled if he looks like hot garbage early against OU, or will we keep him in as the most seasoned QB on the road and just accept the L as inevitable if he gives another performance like he always does against elite teams?

You're not wrong with that TD pass. And his interception was atrocious as well. But he managed it fairly well and ran the gameplan other than that. Even had some good throws. You can say he wasn't good and that's fine, but the fact of the matter is we had a golden opportunity to win that game and the defense blew it. Yet it gets blamed on JG.

Revisionist history.

JG was a JOKE on that day.

Yeah Alontae messed up, but holy hell it should have never come to that!

BYU kicked a FG on their only substantial drive of the first half.

The only TD they scored in regulation was a 20 yard drive after the interception.

UT outrushed BYU by 130+ yards and outgained them despite their QB passing for 50 more yards than JG.

The defense didnt blow the game. They had control of the game until we gave them field position for their only TD.

At that point "the gameplan" changed because the HC and. OC didnt trust the QB. They tried to bleed the clock and hope the defense didnt run out of gas. It almost worked despite basically playing a half without a QB. If you want to give him credit for making sure Chandler and Gray got the handoff that's fine. But theres no need to tout his gameplan management in that game. It changed because of him.

I counted THREE missed TD’s from Section M right in front of me because of his indecision and being late throwing the ball. Probably one of the most frustrating games I’ve watched in Neyland.

True except Ga State and U Mass beat it for me as much frustrating game I watched in Neyland with Memphis in 99 as well.

You said it wasn’t his fault at all and he most definitely played a major part in that loss. I’m not rewriting anything, I was giving you a prime example of a bad mistake he made that changed the entire course of the game. It’s not JG hate at all. I want him to improve, but that doesn’t mean I can’t be critical and point out things that he needs to improve upon when people make a statement that it wasn’t his fault at all. From my side of things you sound like an apologists for him. You’re right people definitely made mistakes that ended up contributing to the loss and it doesn’t rest solely on JG’s shoulders, but IMO his positives didn’t outweigh negatives in that game.

Hopefully JG turns the corner and has his season yet. Ideally it would be great to RS HB next year but I think Pruitt would definitely pull JG no matter the opponent if his play warrants it.

JG will be best bet again due to lack of an off-season. No time to get others up and running on the playbook. Plus physically he will be more ready. Hopefully with our OL we can run the ball much more effectively.

Speaking of physically I saw where he is up to 230 this offseason. I guess that’s good since the running game isn’t a part of his game anyway

Look he's not the greatest QB, he's arguably not even a good QB. But he was certainly our best chance to win last year. He might even be our best option this year, but we're going to have a competition to figure that out as well.

I'm not even saying you are wrong. But BYU had like 17 seconds left to tie the game from inside their 10. At that point the offense had done their job. Without the blown coverage on a prevent defense and a easy missed tackle, that game is over. Defense played well, offensive line blocked well, but they also failed to convert a 4 and 1 on BYU's 19 yard line (in retrospect we should have kicked the field goal). Chandler and gray played well, but Chandler also fumbled one. I thought this was Chaney's worst game all year as well. We were far to predictable and conservative, and he didn't help any confidence issues JG had by calling 20 straight run plays.

JG certainly should take some blame for the game, but it certainly wasn't all his fault, or even mostly his fault.

That's my point though. It's not his fault. He wasn't great, but there's plenty of blame to go around. Despite all the mistakes everyone made, the defense had chance to win the game with a relatively simple play to defend, and they failed miserably. That's what it comes down to in my mind. Now, with that being said JG had a chance to win it in overtime as well, and didn't do it, so that certainly falls on him and the defense as well.
