19 students, 3 adults dead in Texas elementary shooting.

That's a bit offensive. Why is it an idiotic take? A $500 kit will operate fine. It's very curious that an 18 year old would spend 2 grand on a rifle just to go on a suicide mission.
Reports are that that the sociopath bought two DD rifles so had to be $3-4 grand plus another $500 for ammo and 30 round magazines (or "clips" as our libtards like to call them).

So then it may have absolutely no benefit at all if the intruder is not in the area of an armed employee. And where would an armed teacher keep this gun? On them like a police officer? That seems a bit dangerous. Locked away? Then how many vital moments would go by while getting to it? Would the teachers that chose to be armed be held liable in some way if an intruder was not stopped? Would teachers that chose NOT to be armed be ridiculed and judged as “cowards” or “not caring”? It opens such a can of worms.
You’re right, it may not have a benefit (in a particular circumstance). But it also might. And yes it would take some time to get to it, but that’s still better than not having one at all.

Again, I’m suggesting this for those that wish to and are properly trained.

I think you’re missing the point. I don’t mean that every staff member is required to carry. But there would be enough teachers in each school that would take that responsibility willingly and form a line of defense between themselves and the kids. I know I would and I refuse to believe that my way of thinking is lonely.
So you're a teacher?

Wrong.

I posted a reply to K-town earlier, but he doubled down on stupidity.

You won't find many private security guards or tow rig operators that don't utilize it in my city.

I agree in general that most of the non LE purchases have little practical reason and an exceptionally few purchases are probably nefarious, but I don't trust the government to regulate it.
I have several friends with armor, and I've considered getting at least some plates to put away in storage. This country is in a tailspin, and before anyone tells me I'm overreacting, we are just coming off a time when private businesses were shuttered and children were quarantined and forced to wear masks for over a year.

If food shortages and other necessities scarcity become a reality, things could escalate quickly. If a tyrannical government decides to threaten our Constitutional right to self-preservation or civil unrest occurs, I'd prefer to protect my vital organs, thank you.

Meh. I saw plenty of cowardice in teachers unions during Covid. Some truly unforgivable shat. Not from all. But plenty of unions totally used it as an excuse to abuse the public trust.

To clarify I am not calling a teacher who doesn't want to arm themselves, or be a bodyguard, a coward.

I understand your position.

Let’s say if there were only 3 at your kids school. I feel 3% better that my kid is coming home if that makes sense. It does to me

No. But if I were I would gladly put myself between a kid and a gunman. I would do that as a civilian and would’ve as a cop. As a teacher these days, you know going in that the possibility is there that you may die doing this job one day. If I’m a teacher, I’m advocating for the right to protect myself and these kids I swore to protect.

I wasn’t going to reply to your posts again, but I just feel the need to ask. How is that the teachers responsibility? Why are we not putting more SROs in the building? Why are we not putting a greeter of some sort at every school entrance? Why are we not making sure EVERY school has an outdoor intercom to speak with the office and doors that stay locked? The real answer is money. It’s cheaper and easier to tell our teachers to fix the problem than to expect tax payers, government, etc to do something about it. And all the while we (we as in our country) are showing where our priorities lie. I don’t mean to be argumentative. My heart is broken, just as most everyone’s is over this. But it’s not right to put this on the teachers.

Educator here. I don’t think any of us truly know what our reaction would be in a life or death situation. However, I believe that I would die for students in my care. I am in administration now, but I have students in my building. I am probably the first person that would see an intruder. But the opinion that if you “care” and want to be “responsible” you will get trained and carry a weapon simply isn’t true. If I had wanted to do that I would have gone into the military, law enforcement, etc.

I agree with you and didn’t take it as argumentative. Very good questions. I actually think the “best” solution is hire vets to do the job tbh. Of course they take an extensive psychological exam first but there are too many vets without work out there on the streets and looking. But if we can’t get more cops and we can’t get vets then what are we left with? The answer is teachers. And I bet most teachers that take this seriously that it COULD happen to them, would be happy to have the option to protect themselves and the kids rather than be a sitting duck

Yes and that’s your “personal” feelings on the subject. But if we’re being honest, doesn’t that all change once the intruder starts shooting? Don’t you wish you had a gun then?

I think that regardless of what side of the political spectrum we are on almost all of us care greatly about this issue. My husband and I had a heated debate about it over dinner tonight. He doesn’t want any sort of new gun control. I would be willing to back gun control measures if I thought it could help save our children at a school. However, he and I each had this conversation with tears in our eyes. We’re parents, we’re humans, and young children being killed is heartbreaking to us as it is to pretty much everyone.
We as a country need to cause such an outcry that something is done to fix it. If you have 50 guns or if you have 0. If you love or hate gun control. If you are democrat or republican. Because I can tell you first hand, I see these babies every day. They can’t defend themselves against the mental illness and evilness that are in this world. And their lives are worth us adults shutting the hell up with our arguing, swallowing our pride and figuring this out.

That's fine, but proof that such gear will be used in a professional capacity, should be required at purchase. Security guards will have the proper identification. Paint ballers can do without. That won't effect many people.

I understand where you’re coming from. I had a meeting today with other administrative staff to figure out where we may be coming short in our safety. And yes, I do believe that schools are just sitting ducks. I actually had a father call me today and offer to donate guns and safes to our facility. Everyone wants this to stop- we just have different ideas on how to get there.

I really wish it were that easy. But it’s no more easy to talk about between the left and right then it was at your table tonight.
