The FBI collects data on “active shooter incidents,” which it defines as “one or more individuals actively engaged in killing or attempting to kill people in a populated area.” Using the FBI’s definition, 38 people – excluding the shooters –
died in such incidents in 2020.
Rifles – the category that includes guns sometimes referred to as “assault weapons” – were involved in 3% of firearm murders.
Black children and teens are 14 times more likely than white children and teens of the same age to die by gun homicide.
Gun homicides are concentrated in cities—half of all gun homicides took place in just 127 cities, which represented nearly a quarter of the US population. Within these cities, gun homicides are most prevalent in racially segregated neighborhoods with high rates of poverty.
