19 Year Old Dies After Denial From Transplant List For Trace THC

It's not discussed in the article, but if it was tainted weed it has been pointed out that the other(s) that he smoked with are fine.

Different people have different abilities to fight infections. They all could have been exposed to the same pathogen and only he became ill. I find it odd that a healthy 19 yo that was athletic and active develops pnumonia that destroys both of his lungs.

Regardless of this guy's tragic situation I just find it sadly comedic when people go out of their way to demonize weed. In 2017.

Several of us who initially responded to the OP NEVER demonized weed. In fact, I never gave my stance on its legality. I only said that the fact that it is illegal in some states has nothing to do with what happened with the kid being turned down in Utah.

The big pro marijuana crowd is confusing the issue and ran with their protest. It's kind of funny that the "anti-marijuana group" is being looked down upon when it's the pro-marijuana group who escalated the argument into something that it's not.

Never singled anyone out Mr. Defensive. Some people are too touchy, I wonder what would help...

Didn't say that you did. I have stayed out of this for a few days because it's pointless. Just pointing out the confusion, and I pointed it out days ago. If you want to talk about being touchy...just say that marijuana shouldn't be legalized...and then you get pages and pages like this thread.

**** happens. Smoking with his buddy might or might not have a thing to do with his lungs failing. He could have accidentally inhaled any number of things. He could have just been born with crappy lungs that just happened to give out at that time.

The prohibitionists escalated the argument just as much, if not more than, the anti-illegal crowd.

please quote one post where anyone has said weed should be illegal.

the only thing I remember is people saying that it is on the list for other reasons than legality.

So you're saying the only argument was over legality? The anti-weed crowd escalated. The hospital issued a press release indicating that the kid was denied because he tested positive for an illicit substance. Then the probitionists argued the evils of weed justify the decision. Illicit means illegal.

Could've but I tend to look at the most likely scenario. He was fine, he smoked weed, he got very ill.

I've not seen anyone argue one way or the other on legalization except the pro legalization crowd. The others have just said if a stipulation to get a transplant is not smoke weed then don't expect to get a new set of lungs if you do.

Read between the lines brah

It was pretty much immediate. He smoked with his buddy over Thanksgiving. He became deathly ill immediately after that. But he apparently he had to wait until the illicit substance was no longer in his system. Contrast that with somebody waiting for a liver. Maybe they've damaged it directly due to alcohol abuse. Then they had a beer with a buddy. Three days later, or however long it takes to no longer be detectable in their system, their liver fails and they need an immediate transplant. So they get one because they detected no alcohol in their system... but a guy that could have just inhaled the only reefer in his entire life has to wait 30 days for a lung. After all... it's illicit. Whatever the **** that means.

The liver doesn't fail overnight. And continued alcohol use will disqualify you from the transplant list.

no no no, you are only allowed to make assumptions if its casts weed in a positive light.

You're blowing the argument out of proportion. People are taught weed is "evil". The fact that it has positives is often glossed over. That's all some of us are trying to stress. Every argument has two sides.

My point was that the ganja stays in the system so long that it can be a really harsh test criteria. Things that do far more damage can only be checked for a fraction of that time. Maybe there's a way to test for only recent ingestion of THC? Also, there's a marijuana test using hair. Could that one give positive results until the hair is gone?

Reading comprehension can be tough sometimes.

This is a classic postmodern argument. Some older kid/young adult does something they were forbidden to do, suffers the consequence, and then it's everybody else's fault and responsibility to find some way to blame the government, medicine, "Big Pharma," etc.

Moral of the story? If you need a transplant, follow the rules. That should be relatively straightforward.

Responsibility is hard.

"After being admitted to the University of Utah in December, Hancey, of Park City, was put on life support two weeks later and was denied a transplant earlier this month [March] after traces of THC — the main ingredient in pot — were found in his system. Mark Hancey said his son smoked pot with his friends on Thanksgiving after being drug-free for a year."

So I have read a few other articles about this story, and it isn't nearly as tidy as some might like to believe. First, one night of MJ use is not going to trigger a positive 4 months later. Second, he apparently had a history...

I'm not following the next to last comment. His positive test and the need for a transplant both happened at Thanksgiving.

I wonder if he had any respiratory issues before the Thanksgiving weekend.

Mickey Mantle had a history plus he was old. Good thing for him he had three strikes.

Never heard that before. I always thought it meant it was some really "good sheet".

Lol! You can get choked up on mids if you get it too hot or try and inhale too much at once.
