I've kind of tried to predict MR. He seems to go with underappreciated guys who were not supposed to be first-rounders but performed really well in college (though they usually didn't get much recognition for it). Since Alphonso Smith punched another player or something like that, I would predict we go with Darius Butler. But I could also see us taking DE Michael Johnson from Georgia Tech if he's there; if we can make him consistent, he can become an absolute monster.
I've given up on predicting MR, lol. I just am content with him picking the 1st RD'er, and debating the picks beyond that. He landed diamonds in Griff and Dash, and with our positional coaching staff, I trust them.
But, it just boggles my mind when he picks Griffin and then follows it up with Chris Henry. But! I blame Henry of Mike Sherman, who was sooo sure that he could coach Henry into becoming the next Larry Johnson. At the end of the season, ole Sherman bolts for the OC job in Washington...and now we're stuck with him. Hopefully Ernest Byner can do something with him.
In my opinion, we have the two best line coaches in the NFL in Mike Munchak and Jim Washburn. Howard Mudd and Russ Grim are excellent OL coaches, but look at what Munch has done with our OL. Draft 2 OT's in '05, and they're our franchise OT's. Plug in anybody at the OG spots and have success. Other than the nervous snaps during the playoffs, remember how Leroy Harris just handled Haloti Ngata in his first start?! Then Wash who loves the DL and coaching the players. He has a great scheme, which was a big part of Haynesworth's success, and he and the front office can find players who fit his scheme and succeed, ala Kyle Vanden Bosch, Tony Brown, and Dave Ball. I think Chuck Cecil/Marcus Robertson deserve high praise with what they've done in the secondary, producing 3 Pro Bowlers last season. They've groomed Griff along perfectly, and have helped a 7th RD CB/FS 'tweener who was looked at by most teams as a return specialist/special teamer become one of the top CB's in the NFL.
That's why I prefer to wait on OL, DL, and CB positions until a little bit later than it appears we should. That is, unless a huge value drops to us. As for Alphonso Smith, I love him personally. Watching his tape I see a fiesty, confident guy who makes play after play. His tenacity and scrapyness screams "Titans DB" to me. At times, it looks like he's baiting opposing QB's to throw at him. I think he'll be an excellent pro CB. Darius Butler is coming on crazy strong though, and depending who you ask, could be the best pure CB in the Draft (There's a controversy over Malcolm Jenkins being a better FS than CB, Vontae Davis in a thick-headed athlete, and Phonzo Smith is short and slower than thought). His hips are insanely fluid and can flip like a flick of the wrist. That translates awesome for a man-corner. I wouldn't mind either at all, but the little voice inside me says, "You know they can get Mike Mickens in the 3rd and be just fine. And Captain Munnerlyn has the scrappy tenacity that fits the Titans DB identity, and he'll be there in the 4th RD...maybe even the 5th!"
I have a feeling Wash is having wet dreams about Michael Johnson, and I don't blame him. I've watched MJ play, and people are too harsh on him. For one, he had a productive season in his first season starting, so to bring up that he hasn't had 3 10-sack seasons is unfair. Second, he doesn't take as many plays off as people think. GT ran a 2-gap DL scheme. What people viewed as engaging the OT and just staying there isn't him taking the play off - it's him holding his gap. That's what DL's in a 2-gapper do. It's two big hoss DT's in the middle to eat up space, blockers, and basically big bodies. The DE's are supposed to hold their edge. MJ would engage, read the play (which he needs to be quicker about), and the pursure the ball. In pass rushing situations, he was allowed to use his talent, and use it well. Wash's scheme isn't a 2-gapper. It's an attack scheme. That's why Fat Al would get winded - cuz he was always moving forward and not just sitting there holding his gap. MJ would be the Freak 2.0 in our scheme.
God I'm excited about the Draft!!!
