Another emerging prospect from the class is Jared Duke (6-foot-6 320 lbs) from Walker Valley (TN) High School.
The 1st year starter on a team that made it to the 2nd round of the 4A playoffs earned 2nd Team Best of Preps for the Chattanooga area and the best offensive lineman award at his school. He was also named area lineman of the week on two occasions last season.
"We had a great season last year" said Duke. "We made the 4A playoffs and beat Cleveland in the 1st round. In the 2nd round we were down to Knoxville Powell 28-7 at halftime. We came back and played hard in the 2nd half but we fumbled the ball on the 30 yard line with 1 minute left and lost 28-21.
We moved up from 3A last year and to win our 1st playoff game in a bigger classification was huge. We had a wake up loss to Rhea County during the regular season, but we won 4 straight after that".
With D-1 level size, it's hard not to notice Jared in crowd. His teammates feel the same way, as they have embraced him being a leader on his team. "I push people in the weight room" said Duke. "I try and get the guys fired up; I try to motivate our team to keep their mind on the game."
His athletic ability away from the gridiron has also helped with his development on the field as Jared was a wrestler through his freshman year, but he also sees other qualities that have helped him develop as a player.
"I been playing football for 11 years, I know the game well" said Duke. "I've played with the guys on this team forever". A player who projects as an offensive lineman at the next level, Jared has also seen playing time on the defensive side of the ball as a tackle. "Defensive Tackle is pretty fun, but OT is where my opportunities are" said Duke. "DT is fun, you just go after it".
The recruiting process is just starting to take shape for Jared, as he hopes to make a bigger name for himself on the camp circuit this spring and summer. "I'm not really hearing from any schools right now" said Duke.
"Scouts have come by from Cumberland, Tennessee State and Austin Peay. I went to camp last summer at Tennessee and Alabama and I felt I did pretty good. I want to get better as a player; I've been training at D-1 for over a year. I plan on going to the Nike Combine in March in Atlanta and also check out some team camps this summer at Tennessee, Georgia Tech, Carson Newman, and Appy State maybe.
I'm a big Tennessee fan and I like the local schools like Carson Newman, but Tennessee has been my favorite for a long time, I've enjoyed going to games."
Jared can't wait for the regular season to start as Walker Valley opens the 2009 season against the Knoxville Bearden Bulldogs and 2011 superstar Devrin Young. "Man we have a lot tougher schedule next year" said Duke. "I like the fact that we play different teams like Bearden and Ooltewah".
