2010 Prospects

I would love to see some more commitments before signing day. I don't see it happening unless it is a lesser known tallent. The may silent commit to the coaches but they probably want to stretch it out for the attention on Feb 4th.

Zaccheus Mason was a 1* on Rivals a month ago I think. (possibly a 2) He is now a 3*, but ESPN has him pegged as the number #2 TE in the nation. I don't necessarily agree with ESPN, but kids who don't get all-conference/all-region accolades don't get the stars other kids get. Scout has Z as a 3* and 13th TE in the nation.

Point is, he was on no one's radar till he made Tennessee's visitor list and now he's getting reevaluated.

We had never heard of a half-dozen kids before Frank Wilson joined this staff. They're all 3*'s, but obviously the coaches saw something in them they could work with. With our staffs' careers based in different states and regions, don't be surprised for TN coaches to get a phone call from old friends saying, "Come check out this kid." If you're a great player on a bad team, you'll never get noticed. It's all about who sees you play.

Heaps' HS team is defending state champions and he's all-everything, so of course we know who he is.

Stars are great for winning mythical national championships, bragging rights, and sports fantasies, but stars next to your name won't help players win games.

You don't have to explain that to me. I'm surprised you haven't picked up by now that I am not a star watcher. I still stand by my original statement and the subsequent one. QB is the most scrutinized prospect and the kind of guy Kiffin is targeting comes around rarely and is usually highly thought of and heavily recruited. I don't think he would have taken McCoy out of High School at 6'1" and 180. And we both know he never would have gone after Harrell.

Sorry, Sab, I really had no memory on your star stance. I think I used Bradford as an example, not Harrell. I know Bradford is heading pro now, but I don't know how he was perceived as a 17-yr old.

I still think that with the sheer volume of high school kids projected to play Div. 1 football, it's an inexact science to catch them all and someone's bound to slip through each year.

Here come the dirty PMs.

probably better to have the dirty PM's, rather than the dirty BM's, although I can't imagine either being pleasant.

There's no doubt as to your second paragraph. And no worries. I don't know why I was thinking you referred to Harrell. I don't care how many stars a guy has though, if Kiffin thinks he can play, then I want him.

Heaps Names Top 10:

Scout.com: Heaps names Top-10

"I just want to extend a thank you to all the schools that have offered me a scholarship and giving me an opportunity to look at all these schools and for the generosity and welcoming me into the process and trying to show me why their school is the best fit for me and believing in me early," Heaps said.

So here is the list (In alphabetical order):
BYU
California
Colorado
LSU
Oregon State
North Carolina
Notre Dame
Tennessee
UCLA
Washington

"This top-10 are schools I feel I best fit into their systems and style of play," Heaps added. "If there's any other schools that are interested and
want to offer a scholarship, we will consider them. But these are the ten I'm focusing on."

Heaps will visit North Carolina, Tennessee, Notre Dame and California in February. He's still trying to make plans to visit LSU and Colorado, and the sooner the better. "I'm trying to get all these visits that I possibly can and evaluate the schools as fast as I can to get a decision out. It's going to be researching constantly, looking over which schools, which opportunities, which places are best for me. It's going to be a crazy little bit, but we're looking hard at each school and we have to figure out which school is best for me."

Who lands a top class for 2009 will play a role in Heaps' final decision. "The class of 2009 is the kids that I'm going to be playing with. You have to be surrounded by good talent in order to win football games. If you don't have that talent around you, it's going to make it difficult to win. It's something we're looking into and evaluating. We also know that the 2010 class is one I can have a huge influence on no matter where I go. I just want to have the best players around me."

And when will be the next evolution? When will Heaps trim his list to five? "I know I'm going to get it down to a top-5 eventually, but I'm not sure exactly when. We're not quite there yet. It could be tomorrow or it could be a few months from now."

You're a bit behind the curve tonight, UT, I think we started on page 7 with his list and that turned into the usual "what if he takes a mission?" junk.

Newberg said the other day that Heaps might not be as highly thought of as some think. He underwhelmed in some camp that a bunch of the Rivals guys attended. Take that FWIW.

Opps, Sorry! :) :hi:

I only looked back 1 page.... Just finished watching a timeless classic, Saw 5, and have fallen behind...

Sorry

occhio, jack; Did you guys read stud's comments on MB? I didn't want to bring it here in fear of getting thrashed!

I was just over there and I didn't see them. Stud doesn't know much, but he knows a lot of people in Memphis.

EDIT: You must be talking about Rivals. I see nothing on Scout. Please post what he said in Marlon's thread.

I just double checked and it's there.... "info on MB", about halfway down.
