2010 Prospects

I am surprised that Washington State isn't on his list. I had read an article about a month ago that said he had a good relationship with the Washington State staff.

IMO He never had any real interest in WSU. If someone asks Jake about a University, he's only going to say good things about them. They were actively recruiting him, and his favorite WR for the past 6 years committed to WSU, so there were obviously a lot of people asking him about WSU, which probably made for a lot of good quotes from Jake about WSU.

Has he said anything directly about going on mission? I have read alot of speculation from several sources, but never anything directly from him on the subject.

I would think, it is too early to guess where he will go. It sounds like Washington and BYU are early favorites, but he is scheduling visits to several schools.

It is too early in the process to predict where he will end up.

It's not a requirement. He doesn't have to take one. It's my understanding many kids don't make up their mind till after they've turned 19.

I've pulled together some different things---

Rivals--- Aug 24, 2008 cPanel®

"I'm still kind of open to the idea, but I'm not exactly sure what I'm going to do with that," expressed Heaps. "I could very easily do both, but that's something I need to sit down with parents and talk about, and we'll figure it out from there."

[And with Heaps likely to take a Mormon mission, albeit a shorter one than the usual two years if he attends Notre Dame, the Irish could put a couple of years between Heaps and Crist as well.]

Salt Lake Tribue--- March 24, 2008 blogs.sltrib.com - The Recruiting Trail by Jay Drew & Lya Wodraska

[Heaps, incredibly well-spoken for a sophomore, said he is "probably" going to go on an LDS Church mission and has told all the schools that have talked to him that he could be leaving after his freshman year.

"That's one of the first questions I get asked: ‘Are you going on a mission?'" he said. "Schools want to know. It is totally understandable."]

So...maybe he takes one...maybe he doesn't...maybe he takes an abbreviated trip shorter than the usual two years.

He also wants to enroll in January. Wherever he goes, I would say, that it's still possible he could get on campus and then decide the time's not right to leave.

I appreciate the overview.

Doing mission work is probably the greatest thing that anyone can do. If he decides to do that then I say God bless him.

I would love to have this kid in Knoxville. His talent is undeniable, but we need someone that can come in and compete IMMEDIATELY.

Unless there is SIGNIFICANT PROGRESS in BJ Coleman, I think it might be in Tennessee's best interest to look elsewhere.

I don't want to sound ignorant, but why does he have to do mission work at this certain time in his life? If you knew you were going to be a top college prospect, and your goal was to make it to the NFL, then why couldn't you do mission work once you retired from the NFL? In fact, it would probably put more spotlight on the religion, and be a positive. Im not sure I understand why mission work has to be done at a specfic age...

This seems alot like the situation that Ben Olson was in when he was recruited. Wasn't he the all everything pocket passing qb that everyone wanted, he went on his mission, was rerecruited to UCLA and hasn't really done much of anything of note there.
Once they accept Joseph Smith and The Angel Of Wonder, they're kaputo. :(

This is what the all-knowing Wikipedia says on the subject:

LDS Church President Spencer W. Kimball said "Every young man should fill a mission".[3] Young men between the ages of 19 and 25 who meet standards of worthiness are strongly encouraged to consider a two-year, full-time proselytizing mission. This expectation is based in part on the New Testament passage "Go ye therefore, and teach all nations..." (Matt. 28: 19-20). In 2007, approximately 30% of all 19-year-old LDS men became Mormon missionaries; from LDS families that are active in the church, approximately 80-90% of 19-year-old men serve a mission.

Good stuff. It can't hurt to take a chance with him. If he goes on his mission after a couple of years then we will have recruited another stud QB to fill in. Video looks good, and he seems like a good kid. Hope we can land him!

It also helps that he is a big fan of Drew Brees.

It's a shame that religious people feel compelled to shove their faith on everybody else. Missionaries do good work, in most cases--but let's be candid: It's basically a ruse for preaching. The public prosteletizing by Kurt Warner and tebow and others is disgusting...If you believe in martians--think you see green men in the back yard, they put you in psych ward. But it's not only ok to believe in a omnipotent bearded man in the sky, it's fine to go around the world telling everyone else to do the same. Strange, if you think about it. I'm not against religion--but the religious don't want to keep faith in church where it belongs. That I have a problem with.

"All missionaries must meet certain minimum standards of worthiness. Among the standards that a prospective missionary must demonstrate adherence to include regular attendance at church meetings, regular personal prayer, regular study of the Standard Works, adherence to the law of chastity, adherence to the Word of Wisdom, and payment of tithing."

How many all-everything, super-star highschool quarterbacks could meet these qualifications?

Winning the Jake Heaps sweepstakes is a huge 'what IF'.

Kiffin's not going to recruit someone he knows is going to go on a mission and be left with an empty cupboard.

I fully expect Tennessee to sign a 3* QB, in addition to a 5* all-world QB in 2010. We need more young guys in the system and it doesn't hurt to have someone redshirt and develop at a comfortable pace.

Crompton's heading into his SR season and if Stephens loses out to Coleman, I wouldn't be surprised if he transferred. I could also see Coleman going to Duke, if he feels he doesn't get a fair shake either. That's a less likely scenario, though, considering BJ's connection to the team and his perception as a leader.

We could realistically be heading into the 2010 season with Coleman/Stephens as the starter and a true freshman as the back-up.

I respectfully disagree, Jack. I think if Kiffin wanted a 3* QB, he could have found one in this class willing to come to UT. I think he will go after only the TOP QB's in the Nation next year and he may land two of them, but both will be top-flight players and highly sought-after.

JMO of course, and maybe he didn't have enough time to evaluate one this year, but I think if he wanted to just get a young player to develop, he could have done it this year.

BTW, are you hearing anything at all about the visits?

I understand what you are saying, but these groups do alot of good things. There aren't alot of organizations, outside of the religious realm, fighting poverty and disease in third world countries.

While I don't agree with anyone shoving their faith in someone's face, I don't see anything wrong with educating the uneducated, even in matters of faith.

If you think religion only belongs in a church then you have no clue what religion is.

And they shove their beliefs down peoples throats as much as you just did when you posted. If you don't like what they have to say you can tell them to be on their way and they will move on.

This is what I'm saying---Colt McCoy and Sam Bradford were both 3*'s right? They both became Heisman candidates.

I expect Heaps/Sims to be the two guys Kiffin goes at the hardest (or at least until a 3rd QB emerges). I also expect Kiffin to go after someone less polished that he has a chance to evaluate. Heaps, today 1/24/09, looks to be the best pro-style QB for the 2010 class. Ask me, though, who was the best 2010 QB on 11/1/12 though.

I'm not saying Kiffin's going to pursue a dud, I'm saying don't be surprised to see someone with less fanfare and hype make it to our roster as a less-polished prospect that he can redshirt and develop as a back-up/future starter.

I've been flipping through VQ and have seen nothing on the recruits except that Moses was late because of academic matters he had to attend to in Virginia. (per Hubbs)

NYC said not to expect a quiet Sunday.

So in other words there will be a verbal tomorrow to Tennessee?

That last line is very promising.

On the QB deal, I suppose you're right. Maybe he finds a guy that's underrated and sees something in them that warrants pursuit. I guess we'll see. I just see him going after bigger targets. McCoy and Harrell are the exception rather than the rule.

Who does Hubbs see us getting after this weekend?
