2011-2012 MLB offseason thread

I don't quite get the trade either.....seems Theo made out pretty well on that one, though time will tell

Read that Seattle may be the team most willing to meet Prince's needs... just a matter of if he will play there.

Among all catchers in history Jorge, for his career finishes, 18th in hits, 8th in HRs, 11th in RBIs, 7th in 2B, and 11th in Runs.

Argument can be made either way for the HOF. I tend to lean as a yes.

He was good. Never great.

Solid catcher. Also wasn't very good defensively. I say no.

The highest WAR he ever had (baseball reference war) was 6.1...

Considering the murder's row of lineups the Yankees had while Posada was at C I think the WAR stat being applied here is useless.

I know that his career numbers in all major hitting categories are in the top 20 among all catchers that ever played the game. That represents thousands and thousands of catchers over the years. What more do some of you want?

What constitutes "great?"

Why is WAR useless here?

And my opinion could be swayed, but if I was randomly approached on the street and asked if he is a hall of famed... top of my head, I say no.

WAR is a useless stat. As are most that these "experts" come up with, like PER in the NBA.

How about having more than one year of WAR over 6.0?

He had a prime of eight years, and was never the best catcher in baseball at any point in his career. He had once season of 30 homers and 100 RBI, wasn't very good defensively, and played with a bunch of great hitters around him.

Sorry, I don't think Posada is HOF material.

Unreal. I'm guessing their may not be more than 7-8 catchers that did this more than once in the history of the game. Setting a benchmark of 30 and 100 for catcher is asinine.

That's not the benchmark. I didn't say it was. I don't think he was the offensive threat some make him out to be.

Again, he wasn't very good defensively, had one season of 6+ WAR, and wasn't better than Piazza, Rodriguez, Mauer, McCann, or Javy Lopez if you combine all the skills of being a catcher.

Not too mention, he played in a very hitter friendly ballpark. Look at his home/away numbers:

Home: .284/.386/.504/.890
Away: .263/.363/.447/.809

He had two great seasons in his career. Every other year was just good.
If Jorge Posada played for the Cincy Reds, ATL Braves, or Pitt Pirates, nobody is talking about him as a HOF.

I also used the 30/100 because he played with a great lineup and a hitter friendly mark. You put Brian McCann with some of his teams and he would up a few 30/100.

Rodriguez, Piazza, and Lopez are the only players you named to have a career as long as Posada's. Not saying McCann won't, but Mauer won't.

Rodriguez and Piazza put up better numbers(Rodriguez with a few more years of playing time). Lopez is just over 200 RBIs behind Posada. Piazza and Rodriguez will get into the HOF. Posada is boderline IMO
