2012 SF Derek Reese - New TN Commit

check the edit on my previous post.

Can't watch it I'm on mobile...

I'll take you're word though on it. I remember maymon getting stuffed by Davis constantly and Maymon on Davis but maybe my memories selective.

The 2 are PFs and both at times definitely each played opposing C, even with the other out there also. Maybe it was more stokes on C, I thought maymon but as I said maybe my memory is selective. It probably depended more on matchups, and that's probably how it'll be next year as well. It'll be interesting to see.

I do remember it being and issue with the 1/5 screens that they'd pick on stokes this way, and so maymon started playing em'.

Stokes definitely was known as a very good player in post defense in high school. He was also an excellent rebounder. He wasn't great on defense this year, but that's understandable. He'll be a beast on defense by the end of next season.

Check the blurbs of the other players you mentioned.
There aren't any slackers on defense.

No definitely not slackers, but they're not defense first either was my point, you had said he was gonna recruit defense first guys.

Their biggest strengths mostly are offense, not defense. That's not to say they can't play D and are Scotty Hopsons, it's just saying their biggest strengths are on the offensive end mostly.

SIAP: Here's a link to the replay of the Team Florida vs Team USA basketball game in Orlando. Derek Reese is #3. Granted it is in the context of an unstructured All-Star game, but he jacks up about 10 threes and hits one. To me he looks like a springy athlete, but definitely a project, maybe an OVC level prospect.

On that page is a link to a video interview with the players from team Florida. Reese's starts at about the 18:20 mark. I love the "who do you pattern your game after question." Just once I want someone to say something like "Scalabrini man, dude just sits on the bench and cashes checks."

Watched first half of that all-star game. That's all I could handle. Whoever had the the idea for cameras on opposite sides of the court should be fired. Also, a word of advice to anyone that does watch, find your mute button.

I haven't watched it yet, but see anything From Reese?

It was an all-star game, so everyone was out to get their own. I don't think Reese fits well into that environment (based on the little I saw). I only watched the first half. He took 5 shoots, 2 were behind the arc and 1 was a contested layup. He missed all 5. They were all good looks they just didn't go down. He didn't seem to force things and actually passed up a couple open looks to pass to teammates. The one good thing I did see is he appears to run and jump smoothly. Some times kids get to his size and they are just all over the place athletically or uncoordinated. He seemed under control for the most part. If he does make it on campus I can see him being a solid role player, but I don't have any hopes of him being a star. As wide open as that game was, if he didn't excel offensively then, he probably never will.

His offense definitely seems suspect. If you can't average double figures in HS then that is a telling sign IMO.

I could handle the not double digit scoring if something else stood out. But none of his stats seem overwhelming. Hopefully he can play some D. It would be nice for once for UT to have the 6'8" guys on the wings playing lock down D.

I am with you on thinking Martin maybe went early on these guys because he didn't have too many ins with 4* and 5* guys. Hopefully 2013 changes that somewhat, and things start to balance out.

Until UT makes a final four it's unrealistic to expect only 4* and 5* guys, but I think UT is at a place where it can at least draw the line at the high end 3* guys and maybe only take a project every other year or so, instead of seeming like every other guy is one.

it seems richardson was this type of guy too, yet richardson atleast could score in HS. my point being, we cant start 5 guys who are all defensive stoppers yet cant score, but i get what CCM is trying to do with the identity of the program. maybe with few to choose from he targeted guys who were athletic, and could play D in hopes he could improve their offense enough, see washpun.

it appears going forward, by looking at the 2013 targets, he is starting to go after guys who can do both. a few of the guys actually, are known more for their offense first, and defense second, but you know CCM feels he can improve their defense.

we have the facilities to attract top notch recruits, but winning and tradition are 2 things that we lack. we can thank pearl for tennessee now being a basketball name over the last 7 years, and thankfully it didnt nose dive this last year. CCM has the attention of many 4&5 star recruits in the future, and a good solid year next year to show the steady improvement is pivotal imo.

He averaged double figures in every HS year but his senior year when he averaged 9.
He's defended guys like Poythress and held his own.
He's a very good rebounder, passer and handles the ball well for 6'8. Very hard to shoot over because of his length. Gets a lot of tips and altered shots.
He scored 8 points in the all star game.
won't be a star but he'll contribute.
He'll play some this year. He's way ahead of where yemi was coming in.
My guess he'll play as a 3/4 swing man as his body develops.
You're selling the kid short.

^ Well see.

And according to maxpreps he averaged:
Freshman: ?
Sophomore: 8.1
Junior: 10.1
Senior: 9.5

So he BARELY averaged double figured 1 time in his HS career.

If conference play rolls around and this guy is playing, and contributing, I'll gladly admit I was wrong.

It's my opinion he won't, it's your opinion he will, obviously neither of us are going to change our opinions so lets just wait and see what happens.

If he turns out to be a contributor next year I'll be pleasantly surprised.

I wouldn't be surprised to see this kid get the Chievous treatment. Redshirt a year to develop his offense. He plays a position that seems to be a little crowded if he is seen as a 4-man. Even as a 3, he'd likely be behind Edwards, Chievous, Richardson.

Not going to blindly hate on a guy before he steps foot on campus, but it's unlikely he contributes at all next season. He may need a little seasoning like Chievous did. A year to develop, get stronger, etc.

I suppose the best way to evaluate Cuonzo as a recruiter is to look at his resume at Purdue. When Matt Painter was named head coach, Cuonzo was moved up to the main recruiter for Purdue. The 2005 class was a cobbled together, last minute type of deal, so I will discount that.

In 2006 Purdue signed 4 players. 2 big guys that only lasted one season, and 2 3 star guards. Those 3 star guards were Keaton Grant, who went on to become a great player and team M.V.P. at Purdue, despite knee injuries, and Chris Kramer, who only boasted a Ball State offer, who went on to be a 4 time All Big Ten defender and 2 time Big Ten defensive player of the year.
The next season 2007, Martin was the lead recruiter for 4* power forward JaJuan Johnson, who went on to be named an Big Ten Player of the Year, Big Ten defensive player of the year, and consensus All American his senior season, and was drafter by the Celtics in the first round. His other player was E'Twaun Moore, who went on to be only the 3rd player in Purdue history with 2000 points, 500 rebounds, and 400 assists. He is third all time in scoring at Purdue and was drafted in the second round by the Boston Celtics.

2008 was Martin's last season on the Purdue bench, and he was the lead recruiter for 3* guard Lewis Jackson. Who despite dealing with injuries, started at Point Guard at Purdue for 4 straight years, and was known as a lock down defender, and lead a team last year that was first in the nation in terms of fewest turnovers.

So, as a lifelong Purdue fan, the idea that Martin can't recruit or evaluate players seems idiotic to me. He was responsible for recruiting players that pulled Purdue out of the basement of the Big 10, and back to the top. He recruited both NBA draft picks, and great role players. His recruits were known for their toughness and work ethic, and improved every season. Purdue recruiting is just now recovering from losing Martin. Some U.T. basketball fans are just too ignorant to appreciate Martin. I will put Jackson, Grant, Kramer, Moore and Johnson up against any 5 Pearl recruited from 2006-2008.
