2012 Silly Season Discussion

AJ Allmendinger has been officially hired to drive the #22 next year, looking like David Ragan might land in the unsponsored #43.

Good hire for Penske. The Dinger deserves a great ride. As for Ragan, I think it would suit him better to follow Elliott Sadler's lead and go to the Nationwide Series for a year or two. I really like Ragan, but he just isn't a Cup level talent right now and I don't know if he ever will be.

It's a good hire in the sense that there wasn't anybody currently available who is better, not that he's actually a good driver.

His talent lies in road racing.

Dinger will win a race or two and be boarderline Chase material IMO. I'm on his bandwagon and think he'll make the most of this opportunity.

Also, hope Ragan does land the 43 ride. He deserves a decent car and if they can keep the 43 car on the track all season he should do about as well as he did at Roush the past couple of years. Even though he had the UPS sponsorship he was most definitely IMO the 4th wheel there with Edwards, Kenseth, and Biffle all getting better equipment.

if he's paired with the right crew chief, maybe he can win a non-plate race. i would consider Chase material to be unrealistic, but if he can manage to make one, he won't be much of a threat to contend. either way, it's his best ride to date.

i like him and will root for him as i would any other Penske driver, but i don't have any grand illusions that he will be on the level his teammate is about to enter.

i wonder if he's just keeping a seat warm until Penske decides he's ready to put Hornish in that car in a few years.

Kurt will be in the #51 Phoenix Racing Chevy next season.

Good, that should really help Finch's operation. Hopefully some sponsorship will come through for them too. I've always pulled for Finch for some reason.

Jim Utter is saying over on Twitter that he'll also drive for his brother's new Nationwide team next year. Also he is sounding like Kurt will run for the Nationwide championship points instead of Cup this year.

i don't know if Finch can do a whole year and i don't know that Busch was looking for a full time Cup ride. either way, his teaming up with his brother could be the best thing that ever happens to NASCAR.

I asked him on Twitter and he said they are doing the whole season plus the two no-points races.

doesn't make sense then that he would run for Busch points.

My theory is that he knows he won't be competitive in the points this year but still wants to run Cup. This way, if he does go for Nationwide points, he can be competitive and will in all likely hood be a favorite to win the championship.

My theory is that Busch and Finch mutually agree to part ways by the time June rolls around. They're both the same in terms of patience with others. Kurt is fooled if he believes he's going to be getting Hendrick stuff like SHR is getting. Kurt is by far the best talent to run for Finch, but name one other driver that has made it for more than one season for this clown?

I think Kurt will run the whole season for him and become a top free agent for the following season. It almost shapes up similar to Kahne running for Red Bull last season although that was a better ride.

I think it's a good situation because people know the #51 is not competitive. If he struggles, people will realize it's the car, if he does well, people will see how important a good driver like Kurt is to being competitive. I don't see as much pressure in that situation.

I hope he does well, Finch uses Hendrick engines and I think they'll be much better in 2012.

Aric Almirola is expected to be named the next driver of the #43 after the holidays, also a sponsor will be announced then too.

This will be a great opportunity for Aric. However, I hate it for David Ragan. He's a truly cool guy to talk to, but he's just not good enough to get it done right now. That said, I don't think cup owners should give up on him just yet.

David Reutimann landed a ride at Tommy Baldwin Racing for 26 races but maybe more if funding is found. Also Michael Waltrip Racing is close to a deal to buy Red Bull Racing.

The Red Bull cars go from almost competitive to almost mediocre.

Aric Almirola has been officially named the next driver of the #43, no sponsor announced yet. Also looks like Cole Whitt will get Aric's old ride in the JRM #88 next season.
