2013 F Austin Nichols (Memphis Briarcrest)

Turned down? We were the favorite to land the kid till one of the parents got involved. Still don't understand why he would choose a program that never accomplishes anything and would choose a coach who does not know how to coach. Futhermore why would any team want to go after Pastner? I still think it is hilarious that once they left the weak Conference USA that all the major powerhouses in the Big East left so now the conference looks like Conference USA II. But I hope he likes loosing to Butler,Temple,ND amongst other schools. Good luck on bottom feeding

Until we beat Memphis again and make the tourney I think we should refrain from calling anyone bottom feeders.

A program that never accomplishes anything? Could that be the reason he chose Memphis over UT do to the vols lack of accomplishments. As for parents, Nichols' mom wanted him to attend Memphis and his father (a UT guy) simply wasn't impressed with the Vols.

So.. he didn't turn UT down?

Can UT fans really take shots at Pastner when Pastner is 3-0 against your coach, and your coach is yet to win a meaningful post-season game or make it to the NCAA tourney?

Buzz Peterson
Darrin Horn
Jeff Lebo
Billy Gillispie
John Pelphrey

There's a short list of SEC failures from recent memory. I'd take Pastner over any of those. I agree though, he is a poor coach and I'm shocked that teams with the resources of USC and UCLA would be banging down his door.

Pelphrey doesn't have a job, Horn went further in the tournament at Western Kentucky than Pastner has gone at Memphis, and Gillispie is a thousand times the coach Pastner is.

Didn't Memphis make it to the NCAA National Championship? I googled it and can't find any record of it anywhere can someone give me a link?...oh wait

Got a link, but the win is vacated so the link is false. In a matter of fact the whole season was vacated..

You seem somewhat petty, i provide a link from the NCAA not yahoo, google, BleacherReport, etc.; and you respond with a MemphisRoar link. Regardless of vacancies the game occurred, here is more data listed on the NCAA's website with the link included.

2012 Kentucky (38-2) John Calipari 67-59 Kansas New Orleans, La.
2011 Connecticut (32-9) Jim Calhoun 53-41 Butler Houston, Texas
2010 Duke (35-5) Mike Krzyzewski 61-59 Butler Indianapolis, Ind.
2009 North Carolina (34-4) Roy Williams 89-72 Michigan State Detroit, Mich.
2008 Kansas (37-3) Bill Self 75-68 (OT) Memphis San Antonio, Texas

Peculiar situation IMO. Killer recruiter, solid record, but no big wins. Since he's done that consistently over the past 4 years, seems more like he's treading water.

Year One- hardly enough scholarship players to run a practice, plus the guys he does have see him as "their buddy the assistant coach" rather than an HC. Makes the NIT and washes out in the second game.

Year Two- Brings in a great recruiting class but struggles with a team of all freshman. Needs an AQ to make it to the dance (suspected, we'll never know if Memphis could've gotten the at-large). Plays well against a good Zona squad but loses.

Year Three- A sophomore squad who wins the C-USA reg. season and tournament handily, but loses to any big name they play (and several mediocre teams as well: Murray St., UTEP). Matched up against a comparable St. Louis squad in NCAA first round and loses. Will Barton is drafted in the first round.

Year Four- The narrative is "can he win in the NCAA's and can he beat top 25 teams"? Memphis eats C-USA alive for the second year in a row, but loses most significant OOC games. Pastner finally gets his first NCAA win and Top 25 win, though. Has another top 4 recruiting class coming in, along with a bevvy of seniors for next season.

I see improvement. He's not on the Shaka Smart/Brad Stephens parabola of success as a young coach, but not many young coaches are.

I gather from your post that you believe Horn to be a better coach than Pastner, and your reasoning is based on a single magical moment in March for WKU several years ago, but ignores his multiple years of futility at USCe?

If that's the case, we'll just agree to disagree.

Pelphrey is an assistant on Donovan's staff. He's doing fine. Gillispie is a bum. He has been a colossal failure and underachiever at his last two stops. If you struggle as much at UK as he did, you're a terrible coach, despite the fact he knows more about the game than Pastner. His dysfunctional nature overshadows his knowledge.

I would gladly accept losing to Izzo in the NCAA than to Mercer or MTSU on your home court in the NIT. UT doesn't have room for Nichols so why speculate? Pastner isn't going anywhere unless its to Arizona to be an assistant, but if he does leave then maybe we'll hire Bruce Pearl as our next head coach.

1. Who says we don't have room? There's a couple players that very well may not be ere next year.

2. We will see, he sure is letting his name be floated around a lot when he could easily shoot down those rumors.

3. Pearl still has a year remaining on his show cause, so are you gonna hire him with that or just hire a one year guy?

You can easily make room for a player like Nichols if need be. Cal signs highly rated players then works the rest out later.
