2013 F Austin Nichols (Memphis Briarcrest)

Look guys, I don't vote on the top 25, I think "wins against the top 25" is a stupid metric for success.

But I'm not going to sit here and discuss whether St. Mary's is or is not a top 25 team, when on the date that we beat them, they were ranked 25th in the Country.

Bro Montana,

The fact that we are having an argument on whether or not your coach has beat a damn top 25 team in 4 YEARS since taking the job.. and the only team we can come up with is 1.) St. Mary's (LOL) 2. We are trying to determine if this is exceptable because they aren't consensus BUT it may just be acceptable cause they eeked in at 25 in one poll?

Again and I apologize but LOLOLOLOLOLOLOL

The point is that he hasn't beaten any good teams in non-conference play.
His best overall wins in four years are Tennessee (x3) and St. Mary's. Top 25 is the metric that "SportsNation" has chosen to describe that.

The knock is he has never beaten one of the best 25 teams in the country. How's that?
They were an 11 seed. The only people whose opinions mattered had St. Mary's nowhere close to the Top 25. That said, they did place Memphis in the Top 25.

So you have to be a 6 seed or better to count as a "top 25 team"?

Is Wichita State one of the best 25 teams in the nation?

Is Gonzaga not one of the top 25 teams, since they're out?

What about Oregon? Zona?

If we can start inserting teams where we want into the top 25, then I'll just say that Pastner beat Xavier last season, who was preseason top 25 and made the sweet 16 last year.

Where do you draw the line, or do you?

So is the knock on him going to be "he can't beat consenuss top 25 teams" hereafter? And when he does, what will it be then?

St. Mary's has a future NBA first rounder, UT probably has at least 2, how many does Memphis have?

No, the knock on him is anytime he plays a team with talent equal to his he loses.

St Mary's was in one poll, out the other. In coaches and out AP iirc.

Again, I can't see how it's really a discussion. You are the ones trying to do mental gymnastics, claiming that the "top 25 poll" isn't actually the "top 25".

Res Ipsa Loquitor.

UT has 2 NBA'ers. Memphis has two NBA'ers. Didn't Memphis just whoop UTK this season?

Compare the talent in each teams rotation, not just 2 players...Memphis had about the 2nd most talented team in the country on paper.

And how many Tennessee players show up on nbadraftnet 2013 mock draft? How about Memphis players? That's what I thought.

Where do you draw the line, or do you?

When the tournament started, the 24 teams seeded 1-6 were the best 24 teams, according to the Selection Committee. The Top 6 seeds, and one of the 7s, were the Top 25, according to them.
I don't think that should be hard to follow. Their 1-68 rankings are posted on the NCAAT's wiki site.

There won't be another Top 25 until the AP issues its final poll after the tournament is over. So, Wichita State and Oregon are not in there. Gonzaga and Arizona are.

It sounds like Xavier was a nice win in 2011-12, but the timing was not right for it to be a win against the Top 25.

Xavier and Gonzaga?

Apparently, the Gonzaga win was not while they were ranked. In 2012, they didn't even win the WCC season or tourney. Was that the year he beat Gonzaga? Beating Xavier and Gonzaga last year is right up there with beating the last two Tennessee teams.

You can't argue against the top 25 poll and for it in the same breath. St. Mary's was voted into the top 25 the week that we beat them, I don't see your point. There's your "timing" right there.

If the talent level of Memphis isn't way up there, on paper, I'll really begin to question how well the UT staff evaluates players, because it seems like Memphis consistently signs the players UT wants.

Memphis greatly underachieved this year, plain and simple. If I was Pastner he's got a tough decision, having a city in his backyard full of top talent is saving his a$$...does he feel confident he can pull top 5 classes in LA? If he does then he should probably go as I would have to think his seat is starting to warm. If its not then maybe I misjudged the way Memphis view their basketball program and is content with NIT or first round exit in the tourney.
