2013 F Austin Nichols (Memphis Briarcrest)

"We just feel like we need to have this visit and we need to see the campus," Mark Nichols said. "I've never seen the computer labs or anything over there. That's why we're going; to try to get an overall picture of the University of Memphis."

just going through the motions.

Nichols dad talked about it with a tone similar to having to go eat that dry, over cooked roast with undercooked veggies at the in-laws, like I'll go, but only to see what's for dessert. lol

So, take this for what it's worth UT fans, but Gary Parrish and Keith Easterwood were on the radio discussing Nichols' visit to Memphis, and it appears that Memphis may actually be back in the race for this kid.

His mom is a Memphis fan and an alum, and wants Austin to stay home for school.

His dad is reportedly "neutral" from Easterwood, although I personally think his dad is pressing for UT.

Austin doesn't seem as closed-minded to the possibility of staying home for college as once thought. (I know one of his best HS friends just accepted a baseball scholarship at Memphis. It also was mentioned that he may have an old sister that attends Memphis, in addition to his twin at UT.)

Pastner is now working to sell him on "staying home" and being one of several Memphis kids in the 2013 class. Nichols and Nick King played for Lorenzen Wright's AAU team when they were younger, so there is a relationship there. I believe that Nichols has played with Jajuan Johnson as well.

Don't shoot the messenger, I'm just relaying what was discussed on the radio. Also, remember the source: Easterwood. However, Easterwood has been notoriously "anti-Pastner" since being cut-out of the loop over the past few seasons.

In my estimation, Memphis is surprisingly back in it for Nichols, but UT leads, followed by Duke, then Memphis trails by a large margin. I think Nichols is being recruited by, but not strongly considering, UNC and Auburn.

MC,

I have said probably near 100 times menphis makes sense, BUT all you memphis faithful shoot it down. When you listen to what Austin says he wants Memphis makes a lot of sense, much more sense than duke.

I hope they're wrong and you memphis fans are right in that he's not interested in Memphis. I worry though if he's open to Memphis though, they have the PT he wants and maybe his biggest concern is staying close to home.

That's what people were listening to. What a kid is saying to friends and coaches, and what he says when he has a microphone in front of his face are usually two different things. Prior to this trip to campus with his dad, Nichols only mentioned out of town schools as programs he is interested in.

I don't even know if KE has spoken with Nichols, since his visit. He could just be blowing smoke.

and I just reread your comment on Easterwood and Pastner....I can PROMISE you there is NO truth to that at all...Listen just me and you talking here...Keith is about as inept and unrespected in his so called field as anyone I know...that sounds harsh and I dont usually throw folks under the bus....but Keith and Parrish???? seriously lets try to keep the board respectable...and if you would like to know him I'll introduce you sometimes...(hope Keith reads this and then I'll really have some fun)

"Take it for what it's worth"

"Remember the source"

I gave several disclaimers in my post.

I heard him mention memphis in just about every interview, what're you talking about?

He always lists Memphis as a school recruiting him, and as a school on his "list".

I know, and as I just said, what a kid tells his friends and coaches, and what he tells interviewers, are usually two different things.

I put little to zero stock in what any recruit says in an interview. Almost all recruits nowadays know how to play the game and be diplomatic. What the recruit is saying to friends, family, coaches, etc. is what will tell the real story.

Gotcha, I misunderstood.

Well I hope youre right in what you've always said that Memphis isn't in it. They've always worried me and I've made that clear, but never been too concerned because Memphis folks like you have dismissed any chance they may have.

If they become a contender I'll definitely worry, they scare me much more than duke does.
