2013 F Austin Nichols (Memphis Briarcrest)

I think if his Mom is employed by fed ex then that is the reason he has to go to Memphis. She might have list her job if he went to Tennessee. Recruiting is dirty but ccm should have known this and probably had a backup plan

Yep, her job was on the line........

Could you give me your top three support statements for the bolded part above?

I used "appears" because I believe he is an excellent coach but he has only coached UT for one year and there is a lot left to prove. Reasons: (1) I think UT showed sustained improvement over the course of the basketball season, including a very good run to end the season (absent the early SEC tournament and MTSU losses), which I think is a mark of a good coach. (2) The half-court defense and offense are dramatically better than when Pearl was the coach. (3) I thought the team exhibited toughness and effort in nearly every game. (4) I thought that he developed the players during the course of the year, especially Golden and Maymon. In short, I did not believe that UT was very talented last year (outside of Golden, Maymon, Stokes, and, maybe, McRae) when compared to previous UT teams and had significant talent and shooting shortcomings but he maximized the team's potential and the individuals' potential. If not for the initial bumps as the team transitioned to a new system, UT would have made the NCAA tournament. I also think this year's team is going to be good. Those are the reasons, in a nutshell, that I think CCM is a good coach.

Also, do you not believe that CCM is a good coach? If not, please elaborate as to why. I am genuinely interested because most folks think CCM is a good, if not excellent, coach.

I think he's a fine coach. Just not ready to be in a program like UT.

He struggled game planning and game management last season. As the season went on, our weakness was attacking a zone. He knew that, but never made adjustments.

Late game situations were a problem. He never knew how to manage a clock or prepare the team with multiple options. He'd set a play, and it usually ended up with us taking a 40 ft heave. I can't tell you how many timeouts he ate at the end of games.

You pointed to his offensive and defensive sets as a strength. I viewed them quite differently. We took more air out of the ball, but our rotations almost made it impossible to keep rhythm. Everytime we got hot, it was a substitution and it would ice the team for 8 mins.

He may turn out to be a great coach. But he has little experience and that is what is showing. You have to get beat up a few times to learn from your mistakes. I am looking for a trend of program success to continue, but with Martin we are in a learning curve. The guy has never coached in the NCAA tourney. Only time will tell, but to think we will be wildly successful in his second season coaching major basketball is a tall order.

Do you think Memphis's coach do a better job of coaching him up??

Trying to figure out the "why" of AN's decision.

The following two VN threads contain obvious signs (now) that AN coming to UTK was not a done deal (silent commitment aside). Everyone in K'ville ignored the Dad's statements (smokescreen; building suspense). Reading these threads from start to finish now helps make a little more sense of the final decision.

And to see how it all started (and quickly got off-track with unfounded deductions), read the first 40 posts of the thread you're on now. Within a 4-day period in Feb-2012, this board went from barely knowing the name to convincing itself that AN was a definite UTK-lean with Duke and UF trailing. All triggered by an unofficial visit and Martin going to see him play soon after. And he remained a UTK-lean (slight, heavy, done-deal) throughout.

Thats really sad when Memphis is #3 in Ncaa in recruiting, there is no reason to be out recruited by Memphis. Tennessee simply caint recruit in Basketball or Football.

Are you serious? Memphis is sitting on fertile recruiting ground while UT isn't, not to mention Memphis has a better basketball program than UT. Considering the circumstances Bruce Pearl did an amazing job recruiting talent to a school known for football and Girls basketball. When it boils down to recruiting, kids either want to play for an elite coach or a basketball school.

What do you mean a better basketball program? Sad to say but we are slowely becoming more of a basketball school than football.

You don't think Memphis has a better bk program then us? I don't like Memphis at all but they do have a better bk program and I'm not sure it's even close. The only reason bk has gained ground on football here is because of what Bruce Pearl did here promoting the program and the fact that watching UT football has been brutal.

While I'm no saying its hands down either way...if you look up their numbers and compare them to ours its not nearly as lopsided as you're making it sound.

Their numbers...NCAA appearances, head to head, championships, wins etc etc closely resemble Tennessee's...as I said I'm not getting into it either way, but it's not lopsided like you make it sound.

Memphis has been a better program than Tennessee, and it's impossible to argue otherwise, but that has nothing to do with the Nichols situation or Memphis' recruiting class.

If you're going to beat Memphis on their home turf for a player, you need an edge. Pearl's success and style of play, over time, could have maybe been that edge. Martin's style of play isn't going to win over any kids and the success remains to be seen. He doesn't have an argument to tell a kid that Tennessee will be the best place for them, at least not yet.
