2014 JUCO Center Stephen Hurt

We were as good or better than Missouri with pearl......I'm glad we agree hiring Zo that we probably won't be able to reach our ultimate goals.......what makes us any different than Kentucky duke NC Kansas or any of the rest?

And I guarantee you weren't b!tching about where our program was when pearl was here were you? So if we were equal to Missouri with pearl, what's wrong with me saying we should be equal to Missouri with Martin?

What's makes us any different? It starts at the top, you're smart, you know that. Like I said, the AD went out and hired a coach they felt was 11th best in the SEC. When Kentucky needed a coach who did they hire?

I was ok with pearl bc he made the tournament every yr and our recruiting was strong....if Zo picks up his recruiting and starts making the tourney every yr, then I won't complain. I still wanted more from pearl and will want more from Martin until we are competing for championships.

That's fine. Like I said though, our AD isn't striving for our basketball program to be like Kentucky, so maybe you should voice your displeasure to Mr. Hart.

I think we half- heatedly are....we go cheap on the coach but when we get lucky like we did with pearl and his initial success....we start putting the funds up to back it such as all the enhancements we made while pearl was here.....you know that same Kentucky also hired Billy Gillespie

But the difference is that they right the ship quickly... by paying. We go through Wade Houston, O'Neil, Green, and Peterson in 15 years. A great blue blood program doesn't put up with that for that long.

Hart and Cheek won't pay for a top coach. They wouldn't do it do football either and happened to stumble upon CBJ who turns out to be the guy we needed

Don't think it was a plan or good preparing by Hart and Cheek, it was luck. You can't wish upon luck on every coaching search. Eventually it will run out.

The equivalent of an olay/look what I found. Worked for me during my baseball years.

I just don't trust them. I'd love to think if CCM doesn't work out we'd pay for a Brad Stevens etc but what factual evidence proves to me that this will be the case? I'll support my Vols to the very end, but I'd love to see us win our first NCAA championship in basketball during my years on this earth.

If only more people realized this...

I agree with you especially in basketball. Although they tried to make a ridiculous offer to Charlie Strong. 4 million is a lot to pay any coach that isnt extremely proven. So they were going to pony up in football but I think it would have been a horrible hire at that dollar amount.

It wouldn't.

You either get a good coach or you don't. Dollars mean nothing. We were going to overpay regardless.

Yeah but looking at the background of Butch and Charlie Strong, I can't see how anyone would pay Strong that much money when we got Butch for less.

The point is this.... When you are doing a coaching search, you go target your guy, then you pay him what it takes. You don't settle for the best "deal" because the guy is either going to get it done or he isn't.

Example: Dooley. UT got him for around 2mil. 2mil x 3 years = 6 million dollars. But he sucked. So you gotta pay the buyout. 5mil more. So for 3 years we got Derek Dooley at the cost of 11 million or 3.67 million dollars per year.

If Strong is your guy and you believe he's the guy, then you pay him 4 million, even if it seems like it's steep.

How's that been working out for us?

Pretty good when our "combo guard that's not a true point guard" decides to give 100% effort.

Martin said he doesn't need a "true" point to run his offense. Personally I think he said that to show faith in what he had. He doesn't make excuses. But it also needs to be noted that when Trae played well, we typically played well. So seems to me that Martin is right.

That said, I want us to get some better point guards in here in the next couple of years. Hope DT works out.

I understand that and I agree. I am just wondering why Strong was their guy.

Recruiting the point guard position is such a crapshoot. Most guys that have the size to play PG at the college level are the primary scorers on their high school teams. They never develop the proper skills to play the position, so you end up with a diluted pool of under sized shooting guards.

If you can't recruit the blue chippers at the PG position, I'd prefer to go after the two stars and no stars prospects that have solid fundamentals to play the position.
