I see why there would be a record turnout for Trump with the enthusiasm for the candidate evidenced by the unheard attendance at his campaign rallies. The Electoral College was put in place because the leaders at that time thought the majority of people weren't smart enough to put the correct people in place to run the country. It was about control. They had to insure that the people couldn't vote in some zealot that got them whipped up into a frenzy. The electors were hand picked so they knew they would try and do the right thing. It's a shell of what it originally was.
