2023 Recruiting

Well we already have that going on so hope that is not the way her games go down. I really don't think we'll be the home of either Rosario or Velez but like to keep up with what they are doing.

Velez only shot 2 of 6, made 9 of 11 free throws, with 4 rebounds, and had 8 turnovers.

Who’s the Stovall girl? She shot 6 of 10, with 15 rebounds, and 2 turnovers.

Also,
The Robinson girl made 5 of 8 3 pointers, with 5 rebounds, and 1 turnover.

Statistics are what they are ! They don’t tell the whole picture!
Stovall , a freshman made six of ten from POINT BLANK RANGE…..

Robinson (Canada) is their shooter plus Summer but she has injury(knee). Robinson is a two guard and three point shooter but not as good as Velez with handling the ball…. Not a penetrator or slasher type player,

Velez is a true point guard ! Running the offense and handling any and all pressure… She needs work on her shot but her shot is a last resort! Some of her misses are from penetrating and thus the foul shots , because she got fouled . And as you noted …. You better not foul her because she won’t miss many of those . A lot of her turnovers are due to other players not being ready or not understanding bb principals ! For instance…. She threw the ball to a player that not only did not catch it … but the player still doesn’t have a clue that the ball was passed to her ???JMO

I was posting about these players from Webb last year before the bb season even got started.
I have been to many of there games and even sat close to coach Harper at one game at Webb ! I was just letting anyone know that statistics are just numbers …. People can read a lot into them but there is more to the player and the game than how many points , rebounds , etc. etc. Basketball is a team sport and each player has different rolls . Titanna (freshman) was the MVP of the state tournament and deservedly so ! Velez handles the pressure defense from the other team …. Without her ball handling , nobody gets a shot at the goal ! We’re her turnovers because the defense was good or her teammates did not catch a pass ? What about Rosario getting double teamed and triple teamed …. That leaves others open and in better position to shoot or rebound ! I’ll stop rambling now …. There’s more to a basketball game than the statistics. Some of those numbers happened because the other team played a specific way and the next time they play the numbers will be different. JMO

Well, I hope we're interested. She's a relative of my daughter, who helped win the 95-96 Natty. Her granddad is all UT, so if offered, she'll be interested! Go Lady Vols?

Just saw PRG’s post, nevermind.

Stovall is a freshman that played Middle School at Huntland. Her mother played at MTSU. She is very long but 6'1 is recruiting height. She is probably more like 5'11. Athletic and plays hard. Offensively she is not very skilled outside of 10 feet from the basket. Lots of potential though.

Rebounds and put backs, short jumpers, that player sounds like Alexus this year, who really helped our team.

Correct. Stovall is nowhere near the 'quick twitch' athlete that Dye is. Stovall is more of a long, fluid athlete. She is fast. But not extreme lateral quickness and not a explosive quick leaper like Dye. Similar type of player right now though, yes.

Dye is what 5 or 6 year in college!

Have watched the kid many times and those shooting stats are pretty common, she takes alot of attempts for her HS and AAU team, lots of forced things on the circuit. She is not a very big player either. Handles are decent. I like her as a player but have never been necessarily impressed by her from the in person games I've saw.
She is NOT a kid I would watch and say OH MY we need her at TN but I do feel she will probably be one of the 23s that kellie will actually get ... jmo

I don't think were in any hurry to commit a point guard. Have you seen Edie Darby play? We took her as a walk on and just as impressed with her as Jada. I'm sure we want a point guard in the class, but were looking at a lot of them doubt we would taking any commitment anytime soon at that position.

Tennessee needs an elite PG from the 2023 class who can play behind Powell for a season and then take over lead duties the following year. I hope Kellie is selective with the offers that they make.

Yes and I know who that is and doubt it is going to happen. I never understood why we didn't try to get in on Hildago who may have been an easier choice than the one were after. She is an AAU teammate of Pissott she might've had some interest.

Agree with your assessment. However, the statistics are not all inclusive….. Jada never came out of the game except for the last 2 minutes when her coach let the subs play! All other players were substituted normally but not Jada ! She obviously has bb skills and is a point guard. But she needs work on her offense!
That being said : I believe she has an offer ..

I believe Brooklynn is the heir apparent to the PG position after Jasmine. Don't sleep on Brooklynn. Brooklynn will have one year left after Jasmine graduates. With that said, I nevertheless agree with you that we need an elite PG from the 2023 class who will get two years of seasoning under Jasmine and Brooklynn.

I would say a big point guard with a three point shot. Miles will be a nice small guard change of pace who can get after the smaller point guards and also create turnovers from the opponent.

Tennessee has been playing without consistent scoring from the PG frankly since Westbrook left. Not saying the PG should be the leading scorer, but they can't be afraid to shoot the ball, and need to have the offensive skills to keep defenses honest. Powell looks to be able to fill this gap, even if she's not a "big" guard. I'm more interested in seeing her ability to be a scoring threat on something other than drives to the basket. Hopefully, whoever succeeds her as the lead guard will have the same skillset.

Yes I agree a scoring threat PG would be nice, TN has not had one of those for a long time.

We had Evina West Brook and she shot way too often shot too much and the offense never flowed well.
