2023 Recruiting

I think Miles is a great change of pace PG that can be disruptive on the defensive end, but I was thinking more of...

...this. Others may disagree, but they need a PG that is a scoring threat - the way that someone like Clark, Henderson, or Bueckers is able to deliver. Tennessee has been playing without consistent scoring from the PG frankly since Westbrook left. Not saying the PG should be the leading scorer, but they can't be afraid to shoot the ball, and need to have the offensive skills to keep defenses honest. Powell looks to be able to fill this gap, even if she's not a "big" guard. I'm more interested in seeing her ability to be a scoring threat on something other than drives to the basket. Hopefully, whoever succeeds her as the lead guard will have the same skillset.

Spot on. Miles is fine for her role, but she's never going to be the starting point guard for a team that wants to contend for SEC championships or Final Fours. Same for Walker.

Powell needs to be a massive upgrade to the position...

I think we have incrementally improved our talent each year. Powell should be an upgrade for the pt guard spot, but nothing indicates she will be a huge upgrade. Miles, Striplin and Wynn have given us much better play off the bench and much needed depth. Puckett could not replace Rennia, but collectively, taking into account the whole class and factoring in improvement of existing players on the roster, that was probably an upgrade just because we were so terribly thin previously.

But it looks like next season may be the highwater mark for a while. And I only say this because Rae did not play most of this year so the comparative effect of her being gone will not be what it otherwise would have been. I don't expect Justine to come right in and be as productive, but if she can stay healthy the whole year then overall we have a chance to break even.

Jackson, or another really good portal player, would make me think we are still gaining in talent. It just isn't coming as quickly as we would like. This is the year we absolutely have to get the Horston level player player out of high school though. I don't want to imagine what this year would have looked like without her.

Well, since we don’t have complete rosters for future seasons yet, even for next season, we can’t speculate much. I see consistent progress ahead, though, based on recruiting and coaching. Recruiting “elite” players is a very long game, and in that context, Kellie and staff just got here:

A lot to be determined and we can reevaluate everything come July 1st when the portal is closed for player to be eligible next season.

Has anyone heard anything about Taliyah Scott? She took a visit to Tennessee and then Arkansas and committed to Arkansas on the spot. Her mom started following me on Twitter yesterday and a couple of hours later, Taliyah did too (I wasn’t following either one) Checked who they were following and her mom follows our whole coaching staff and team account, but I found it odd that neither one is following Arkansas’ team account or any of the coaches. Wonder if she realized she made a rash decision?

Hope so top ranked player like her can go anywhere she wants.

You are seeing the wrong account her name is Taliah Scott and she follows everything Arkansas

That is why I have said a few times it may be so important to fill some of those positions with portal players that have more than one year of eligibility left. We have one already very early in the portal season. Getting at least a couple more top players with two years eligibility has to be the goal and I could say they might want more just don't have the scholarships to do anymore. The six player senior class we are losing is a lot to lose when your junior class was only a couple players and they are more of the role playing type than the take charge superior players. Even if the 2023 class proves to be elite they are freshmen and not expected to be able to replace the contributions of players like Key and Horston. We'll have to be very careful as to how we use these last two scholarships. I like the way we used the one thus far, but I would think we'd start the waiting game until after the tourney and the portal fills up to make any further selections. What we actually need for next season is two players with the same ability of Key and Horston which may be impossible to find, but we need to get as close as possible to players that can fill their roles.

Not letting a recruit wear a jersey unless they are committed I feel is a turn off to some of these young ladies but if that's the LV way then so be it but that's a tough rule
Yes sometimes coaches need to change things in different times. That may have been huge thing when Tennessee was in a far better position to select recruits other than recruit them. I can understand keeping with a tradition that Pat started and I can also see going away from it.

I think it sends the right message.

If thecoach picks you up at the airport, that ought to be enough to make you feel special. The red carpet is rolled out and the VIP treatment given. Tbey get LV gear & have pics taken with the coaches. They get to interact with the players.

Why do they need to pose in a game uniform? To me, that's like having a prom pic made with someone and then going to the big event with someone else. Just rubs salt into the wound.

Personally, I don't want to see pics floating around the internet of players in Lady Vol uniforms whose only connection to the program is to play against Tennessee. If I see such a pic and the player never suited up for our team, I know it's a fake. To demand otherwise is to act entitled, and we don't need that.

I hear you and like I said I'm not knocking it but we are not that go to school anymore and the mentality of the young ladies now are different so I would play the game to try to get them here

Guess you missed my edit to my earlier post. Just asking, I know nothing about these players. You obviously like Velez. Stovall scored 14, got 15 rebounds, had only 2 turnovers, and got MVP, so that’s noticeable. So, Tennessee not interested in her?
She’s just another in a long line of really good girls’ basketball players to come out of Franklin County. Hopefully she will follow in Latina’s footsteps and play ball for the LVs!

Tennessee just had about 5 highly rated, recruited prospects on campus for a visit against LSU to end the regular season. The #6 recruit in the 2023 class stated it was their 5th visit to Tennessee. That doesn’t sound like to me that Tennessee isn’t a school players don’t want to attend any longer. It’s a lot more that goes into these decisions then just basketball.
Tenn received a commitment from a highly recruited player out of the portal in the last two weeks who was recruited by Baylor & Louisville plus multiple SEC schools.
Injury after injury has greatly impacted a still promising season for a team that will be a top 16 seed in the NCAA tournament. After the tournament, my instincts are telling me based on the energy surrounding the program they’ll add atleast 1 or 2 more key pieces to the 2022 class.
Perhaps KJH & her coaching staff have a plan that they are sticking to. Have they loss some battles.. sure. Have they won some.. yes.
If you don’t think the top colleges in the country are still going after Justine Pissott and trying to pry her away then you’re sadly mistaken. I said that to say that EVERY fan of Tennessee need to start showing more appreciation for the players who have made the decision to be a LV.
Let recruiting take care of itself.
I just know that there’s many great basketball players interested in playing at the University of Tennessee.
