2024/2025 Coaching Carousel

He claims he is. He said he was in a spot where he could do whatever he wanted and he wanted to coach.

He heard Pittman say in an interview that a HC duties are set the practice schedule and beg people for money. And he realized it’s true and that he didn’t want to do that
Case in point to his OC prowess...Who else could have pulled off tOSU this year with garbage QB's and such the way he did. Short list.

Thought it was spot on. Also, if you are succesful at a school that sells itself, there may be some relief from the HC circus, but not a lot. In many respects Oregon is one of those few schools where the circus is way easier than other schools. I'd say it's a great job. Maybe Top 3 for a HC. I just don't think they'd be all that down here with the boys. If we're talking SOS and opponent performance, they show as weak as anyone else above the Mason Dixon.
Prolly takes some work to recruit to Oregon, but the Nike buy in alone offsets that a lot. For everything else, it’s probably a lot easier than most places.

Now then, not quite the same scenario, but we’ve seen what’s happened to Okie St with T Boone passing. Uncle Phil is 86 years old. Is his successor that tied to the university?

I don't think Okie St's struggles are because of T Boone's death. They've had 2 really good seasons since he passed (2021 and 2023). They returned a good offensive line and a RB (Ollie Gordon) that won the Doak Walker award and was on some preseason Heisman lists, but were inexplicably awful.

I think the fall off is slow, but happening as a result. Especially in a new era where money is literally everything it’s sped up.

We're 3 years into NIL and they still have good players though - they returned a ton of key contributors (especially on offense) from a team that was Big 12 runner-up last year. Ollie Gordon statistically was probably the most impressive back in the country last year, yet didn't even crack 900 yards this year and had multiple games where he was almost invisible. It seems more like coaching; I wonder if Gundy is getting stale.

They’ve had 10th or worse in conference recruiting classes for like 3 years now. The money, facility upgrades, etc have worn off and they’re paying the price

I don't think it is as simple as that. Their first 2 classes in the NIL era actually finished 3rd in the Big 12.

If he truly made a career mistake it was leaving Oregon in the first place. Great set up and he had it flying high.

Believe there were some NCAA issues at Oregon weren't there?

I'm not exactly sure Chip had much of a choice as his prospects in college were going to be limited for a bit.

Don't recall exactly, but you could be right on that. Would make more sense in that no coach in his right mind would have walked away from UO at that time under free will.

Looked it up.

Chip got an 18 month show cause. Basically, go to NFL or be unemployed for two seasons.

Knew there was something that went down, but didn't recall the specifics

That's not really the situation. for OSU its the difference between going 11-1 and beating your rivals on the way to the playoffs, vs going 10-2 and losing to your rival while on the way to the playoffs.

I think most OSU fans would trade an 11-1 playoff season with a loss to Michigan for a 10-2 playoff season with a win over Michigan.
Those are not the only two available outcomes.

Belichick recruiting would be an adventure.
I would kill for them to make a reality TV show out of those scenes in parents' living rooms.

Sounds like there is going to be a huge mess in Stillwater.

If they were truly firing him for insubordination or stupid press conference comments, they'd have done it already. Ok St was awful this year and they sound like they're ready to move on, but also want to get out of his contract which was juiced by his phony flirtations with us, twice.

"accept a restructured deal that we already have in place or be fired for cause" lmao
Yeah you definitely can’t fire *for cause* for not re-negotiating an already existing contract. Gundy hasn’t broken the terms of the existing deal. They’ll have to pay the buyout. He can sue their pants off if they don’t.
