2024 Presidential Race

I'd describe it more as anti-illegal immigrant rhetoric, at least from Trump himself. I will admit that some people in Trump's orbit and rank-and-file MAGA folks do have views that could be described more as anti-immigrant, which does scare Hispanics off.

Ultimately, appealing to Hispanics as any other working class voting bloc is more effective than appealing to them as members of a racial/ethnic/identity group. Trump's gains notwithstanding, Hispanics do reliably vote D but that doesn't mean they are particularly woke or socially liberal; it's really to the contrary.

I've often wondered whether the Hispanic community is embarrassed by illegal immigrants casting a bad name on their entire community. Let's see what they say in the postgame interviews.

I don't see the pull to the right that you speak of. I don't see them reducing the size of the federal government, cutting spending or doing much of anything a party "pulling to the right" would do. The Rs are still left of center and have a ways to go before they get "right".

Is fiscal responsibility actually a conservative principle? We've had plenty of conservatives preach it, but we've never abided by it in my lifetime, and it's not even on Russell Kirk's list of 10 conservative principles. The closest thing that comes to it is principle 4 (prudence) but he doesn't directly tie the idea into fiscal responsibility.

My Mom has called herself a "small government conservative" as long as I can remember, which implies to me that it was never a given.

Huff, take a breath today.

I am not being a smart ass; rather, I am trying to be a VN brother here.

If you start with this the day after the election, you are going to let this consume you over the next 4+ years.

It will not end in happiness for you.

Please just take measure of this. Take care of yourself. If you need a break from this place, take it. We will welcome you back whenever you are ready.

Bro, IDK where you think you are, but this is the place where we criticize government.

Went to bed last night convinced that I’d wake up to a Harris victory so I’m completely surprised.

The best thing about last night, it should drive the last nail into the coffin of the legacy MSM.
I wish you were right, but they are the propaganda wing of the DNC. They will go on 24/7 parse and attack mode about every utterance Trump has. They are a business (sort of). There are still a lot of luthers and ELs out there that will lap up every word that Lawrence Odonnel and Jake Tapper say.

Just like Libertarian calling oneself a conservative means nothing so you haven't seen "plenty of conservatives preach it". You've seen self labeled conservatives pay lip service to fiscal responsibility to get votes.

I think that a significant percentage of them is embarrassed by it, yes. I'm not sure if it is over 50%, but the percentage is significant. Dems have thought for a long time that getting in front of them and going "Republicans are racist and want to throw you all out of the country" works, and honestly I think that probably has for a while, but during the last 3 presidential cycles the ship seems to be turning on that point.

The appeals to patriotism (this is underestimated as well; most immigrants, by definition, love the country otherwise they wouldn't have come here), entrepreneurial appeals, and family-based appeals that Rs have come at them with, in addition to being huge anti-illegal immigration hawks, appear to be working.

Biggest loser of the cycle wasn’t Kamala. It was the media. Their monopoly of thought is over and done
I don't know why you and hog think this. They will double down on 'fact checking' and all the other ******** they have been doing for the last 4 years when Trump says anything. I really really hope you are right and CNN goes tits up, but I highly doubt it.

I would not argue with any of that.

Oh I think over the next couple of years we'll see the legacy media as we know them die off from lack of viewership.

Right, but what about the part where the Father of conservatism didn't even mention it in his 10 principles?

When were conservatives actually prioritizing fiscal responsibility?

You're looking for it in the wrong place. Conservatives have never been that.

They'll be fine, just like Fox, X, etc. Its the clicks that matter, not whether you are reporting well or accurately.

Yeah. Journalism is yet another useless degree offered at institutes of higher learning. And the fact that they teach any kind of ethics class is not funny, it is incredibly sad.

Walz didn't add anything to the ticket and was a complete goofball. I don't think Vance really added anything to Trump's ticket either, but at least he's well-spoken/articulate and young; he could be a standard bearer/successor for Trumpism after he's gone. It didn't matter because it would have just been a cherry on top, but I wonder if Trump could have won VA if he picked Youngkin.

Kamala herself, relative to other members of Congress, is pretty liberal and from a liberal state; she could have gone with an option (like Shapiro from PA, but there were other good ones too) that moderated the ticket a bit.
IMO, VP selects may not add value to the ticket, but they most certainly can detract from it. And when the worst you can come up with to disparage a VP pick is that they are weird (as opposed to Walz??) because you got nothing else, you really shouldn't be woorking in a campaign capacity. Their attempt to discredit Vance was a benefit to Trump cause there was not really anything to discredit. They would have fared better ignoring him. But the Dem machine is not really that bright. They keep trying to feed us malarky we don't want and threw it back in their face.
