2024 Recruiting Thread

Why should I change your mind ? That is your opinion and mine is that high school recruiting is more important than the portal; and, the portal is also important ;but you can not rely exclusively on the Portal .

In theory, why not? Why can you not build a team mainly from the portal? Let's say every year you sign 4 high-quality portal players - a SR, a JR, and 2 SOs. Every year. That is sustainable IMO and gives you a veteran, low-turnover team in perpetuity. In addition to this, you still have about 5 open scholarships for HSers but you can be very selective and only take HSers that can contribute immediately or those that you have high confidence that they won't skip town after 2 years of development.

So recruit bench players from High School…bid for developed players by other coaches out of the portal to win. Portal is nice with the extra Covid year…portal and a proven Coach won the championship.

I would recruit elite HSers that will get PT as freshmen or players that accept that they will sit and develop for a few years. I don't want to pour limited resources into a player and then they pull a Pissot on us.

Disagree…I blame CKH on Justine knowing well and good Ace was the better more diverse player. Low hanging fruit in your backyard and should have taken both. Otherside, players that accept sitting and waiting aren’t the kids you want as those are the ones recruited over…that’s the old model that is dated.

Justine was never used to her strength here,,,never g ot a real shot

Disagree. It was a valuable learning experience for sure as she got what Justine didn’t. But this was a prime example of getting caught up in the kid looking good getting off the bus. Seeing this kid play basketball since 3rd grade I’ll trust myself.

You need some Edie Darby's if you're going to carry more than 9 players. And I hope Ace is half as good as you promote her to be, sincerely, I do.

She had a shot, and that's all she did, shoot 25 footers. I didn't see the physicality or even the mentality to be physical that is needed to contribute as a LV. Soft player.

I apologize, I've gotten this thread way off track. Based on rumors, insider knowledge, anything really, which players on the above list would you say we have at least a 25% chance of committing?
Do we have any visits set up with any of them?

There are a lot of what ifs in your post .what if those high quality folks are not there in the portal ;what if those high quality portal folks do not want to come to Tennessee;what if you have all seniors from the portal and can not sign the number of portal players to form a team with any depth;what if the portal players signed do not mesh and there is a severe chemistry problem resulting in losses and losses .What if you can not sign high schoolers ( the 5 you referenced like the last two years have experienced ).? Imo you need at least half of your squad to be blue chip high school signees to promote a high quality and sustainable winning culture over the long term ....not for one or two years.

That is the question isn't it ? There is no transparency in who is being recruited and no one covering the Lady Vols who have knowledge of what is going on and now no insiders who can give clues about what is transpiring.

That's not true. Ballout maintains info and 247 keeps an updated recruiting list that is regularly updated once staff or player stops recruitment communication.

Pretty clear you have confidence in your OPINION, why should others seriously alter their’s based on yours. What makes it bandwidth worthy?

I disagree! If you are good enough you bang down the door to get playing time. You work your backside off and show everyone how good you are. I don't think I saw her ever drive to the basketball or get on the blocks (she 6 foot 4) . For whatever reason it didn't work out for her here. Maybe it's was lack of competitive drive, lack of work ethic, lack of skill, or maybe she was just over ranked from the start. Whatever the reason she's at Vandy now and we will be able to access her ability when we play her.

If you get 5 different players, you get players that have played in 5 different teams, playing in 5 different systems, and if they were good, they may have been the go-to player, or a selfish player, or a player who has had issues with playing time. When you recruit from High School, you are looking for kids that will fit into the system the coach wants to play. Picking from the portal, I believe the coaches are looking for the best player available, regardless of position. Look, last year it took the LVs many games before they started to click because of the reasons I have mentioned. One player from the portal to fill a need is what you really want, but to fill most or all of your team from there will probably not let you go where you want to go. Just sayin. If the team needs to go there, okay, but don't give up on the High School recruiting.
