Let's hope CRB can keep majority of freshmen from this upcoming year along with all of the non-seniors. Lots of depth at wing and bigs for 2024. PG in 2024 going to be huge to back up ZZ. If no high school ones are signed hopefully can grab one in portal.

Either way, its imperative that we get another PG next year. Whether that is a freshman or a PG through the portal. We can't not get one like we have the past two cycles.
So you don’t consider Freddie a pg even though he will be playing there this season? How about Edwards - he is a pg? That’s two in the last 2 seasons CRB has signed.

Well ON3 and Rivals both have FD listed as a SG. I’m really glad that he is able to play PG for us this season, and who knows he might be the point guard after Zeigler that we have been missing. Edwards is gone and not on the team anymore, so whether he was a point guard or not, we still need to sign another one.

My comment wasn’t a shot at Barnes at all, I have been very pleased with recruiting, my statement was just voicing my opinion that we need to get another PG to learn behind Ziegler his senior year. I think bleedingTNorange has voiced something similar before.

A traditional, old school PG isn’t as critical on the offensive end unless there are only one or two scorers that need to get the ball. Like a traditional, old school center. You just need players that can get the ball advanced to your end and somebody capable of guarding the 1 on the other team. The Curley Neal types are entertaining, but as long as there are plenty of well coached ball handlers that are good shooters, passers, and free throw shooters it isn’t that big of a deal. You can advance the ball far quicker by passing than by dribbling.

I don't think Freddie was recruited as option #1 being PG, nor was it considered his primary position. In other words, he isn't a pure PG like Chandler or Zeigler. I think he is plenty capable of playing the position as a scoring PG whose skill set lends itself to that of someone who can beat his man off the dribble, get to the rim and score. He is a capable passer and facilitator, but not likely someone who is ever going to average 7 apg. His outside shot is the area he needs to improve, so it can be argued that every minute spent learning the PG position is a minute he's not working to improve that area of his game.

TL;DR version, Freddie can play PG (and will, at least this year), but I don't think he was recruited to play that position as his primary spot, nor was he the 2023 class's intended solution for that spot on the floor.

Yep totally agree with this and was what I was trying to say with my comment.

If you are a 'team' oriented guy ... you play where you help the team the most.
If that is PG or 4, catcher, or DH ... that is what I see in JM. He was not a point guard! But he functioned like one for a portion of last season.
That is one of my favorite things about JM. I also saw him doing catch and shoot the 3 three all in one motion ... it looked sweet. I am hoping to see more of the sweet shooting this season from him.
If Freddie has the mindset I think he does, we will be playing the PG and the SG and loving every minute of it.
But what do I know, my last name is NOT Barnes.

The four-star prospect has taken two official visits to Xavier and Missouri and a handful of unofficials to Wake Forest and Georgia and is planning to turn those unofficials into officials here soon.

Georgia: "I am supposed to take a visit in August but it's not set up yet. I love that staff. I have been talking to them almost as long as Wake Forest. It's a great coaching staff and a great program and it's close to home."
Missouri: "It was also good. Coach Gates was super involved, he's a good coach. I love all of the coaches, they are super specific with analytics and they were showing me all of the data, what they do and how they get guys better."
Wake Forest: "I am taking an official August 2nd, I am pretty sure. They definitely just saw what I can do the earliest. I was definitely under-recruited throughout my career and they have always been there. They're a great coaching staff. They let their guards play and you can see what they do through the past guys they've had so it's definitely a good position for me to be in possibly.
Xavier: "It went really well. I love the coaching staff there. I am really close with those guys and I talk to them a lot. It's set up really well and they showed me everything I need to know. I definitely like it over there."

No mention of Tennessee. Will cut list after Peach Jam. Hopes to make a decision in September sometime.

Thanks, wonder if that interview was a little older since he’s gotten a few offers since…I would think we will push for a visit.

I agree with you for the most part but so many games come down to the last 2 or 3 minutes when you need someone used to having the ball under high pressure that can advance it and get it to the right person. ZZZ is that person and Vescovi is even though he lacks the traditional quickness you want. He knows how to use his body. That is why I think you need to invest in a traditional, old school type of point guard imo.

Good to have, but not essential IMO. When everybody else is good at moving the ball effectively then the need for the traditional PG isn’t as critical. It’s going to be that second pass (after the inbounds pass) that they’d need to be well coached to handle. Good spacing. Being aware of the defensive positioning. Don’t get trapped. Keep the ball moving. And hit the dam free throws. Experience helps a great deal in those scenarios. This year we’d have Awaka, Aidoo, Mayshack, JJJ, and Santi. Next year could be a problem after losing at least JJJ and SV.
