2024 Transfer Portal Thread

Trilly doesn’t have a feel for this one IMO. Hes just throwing crap against the wall and seeing if it sticks. I think Lanier ultimately chooses us because of Barnes proven track record and a solid NIL offer. While Kentucky’s may be higher i don’t think it’s in the stratosphere of 1.7 million like everyone was saying. I think the difference in money may be a lot closer than anyone might suspect, and I think the appeal of playing for a more proven coach in his home state will win out in the end.
Some of the UK insiders on there think it’s more in the realm of 1.3-1.5m max FWIW. I think trilly probably mostly shifted his % bc of him getting out of UK without shutting it down.

Trilly also changed his % prediction to 40% UK, 35% UT, 25% BYU. Sounds like we have a some momentum and our visit just started. Great vibes this am.
The momentum shift was to be expected if Lanier didn't commit on his visit to UK. Pretty typical in the recruiting "predictions".

That's not that bad of a shot. From the way people are talking about it I thought it was a Bill Cartwright or MKG situation.
I think the issue is how blockable that shot is in the SEC if he doesn't create space to get it off. And I think that's a fair concern until he proves otherwise. Bill Cartwright form would actually be a better case for him as he'd at least have the ball high instead of pushing it from his chest. 😄 Right now, it looks like the shot of the 8-year old trying to launch 3s on the 10-foot goal. But, if it goes in, it goes in. He'll just need space to get it off.

Anybody ever watch Jamal Wilkes shot the ball years ago. Jamal was a great shooter doesn't matter about form as long as the ball goes thru the net.
Yep. Been a bunch of "strange shots" that were successful. George McGinnis and that one handed palm ball is one that I always seemed oddly drawn to. Right there with Rick Barry and those free throws.

Been saying this from the beginning…im willing to bet Spyre’s offer while not the highest figure it is extremely competitive and includes incentives. No state tax has to play a part too.

The concept of us being the pick for Lanier simply based on “development” is poor wording imo…

One could say the same about Vescovi but due to his lack of athleticism. Teams could focus on him and take him out of the offense at times. Lanier does have the ability to beat you off the dribble which will make it more a case of picking your poison on defense I suspect.

So he's a Bastupido listener?

Haha...at least you're honest and own it. 😆

I think Knecht was quite a bit more projectable even though I don't know that anyone foresaw what he ended up doing, necessarily, but it wasn't a stretch to think he could be our leading scorer just because of his length, shooting, and ability to score from anywhere. Chaz has a lot of those same abilities, just to a lesser degree, IMO. I think he can still be an impact guy, but I just won't be quite as surprised if he ends up being a modest 10 ppg game guy, either. I think there will be more balance and fewer opportunities to take over like DK did, which is a good thing, probably.
Some of the PPG predictions/hopes I've seen here have been questionable imo. Outside of Knecht, our top scorers have been hovering around 12-13ppg over the last few seasons, with Chandler almost eeking out 14ppg at the top of that spectrum. I personally wouldn't describe 10ppg as "modest" on the '24-25 UT roster, but I am with you on your overall sentiment.

Additionally, I personally find it difficult to predict/expect exceptional performance from any low-to-mid major transfers at this time. The skill/effectiveness gap between Knecht and the next best transfer we've had in Barnes's tenure is immense. If Lanier winds up here, I would consider 10ppg a smashing success.

Modest in the sense that he could even be our 3rd or 4th leading scorer at 10 ppg due to the balance that this team could produce, and that he isn't likely to touch anything (statistically) near what he did at North Florida like Knecht did in his one season relative to his numbers at Northern Colorado.

Love it if it happens this way, and hopefully the rebounding numbers go up as well with Igor and Okpara

It was hard to choose between Igor and Lanier as the leading scorer. ZZ will get his 10-11 points but if he’s our leading scorer, we’re in trouble.

I’m really really really really really high on Igor. Not many 6’10 dudes that can move like him while having the handling he does

I really question what fans are seeing most of the time when they critique a player's shot. I spend lots of time viewing content and talking about the process of how to shoot a basketball. There has been massive leaps in collective understanding about how to best transfer energy into the basketball when you shoot and how to consistently make sure you only miss short and long, not right and left. Watching him shoot, he checks the boxes for how to shoot a basketball effectively. The only real critique most shooting coaches would have is his 2spot or load point is a little further in front of his body. But that is likely due to something about shoulder tension. He has his weight loaded and stacked really well in his base. The movement is very fluid without a noticeable pause at his 2spot. He has good alightment with his right shoulder turn. It's consistent and repeatable.
I don't think anybody is concerned about his shots going in, the concern is that he can't shoot over a defender, and with that release he also needs open space in front of him. You want him taking open shots but what are the possibilities when he is defended? Knecht could hit shots at the tail end of the shot clock not only because he could shake defenders but also because his release point was so high he could shoot over them.

I love his beast mentality. He’s absolutely very skilled and very aggressive.

Saw the future.

ZZ - 11.5ppg
Lanier - 14.5ppg
Mashack - 9ppg
Igor - 10.5ppg
Okpara - 8ppg

Dubar - 10ppg
Gainey - 6ppg
JP - 4ppg
Hope this happens, probably best case scenario with 3 transfers coming in from the mid-major level.

I think Gainey off the bench can be an X-factor for this team if he has a good offseason.
He played well at the start of last season through November, averaging 11.6 PPG, but then fell off once December hit and never recovered offensively.

He could have a breakout Senior season as a potential Sixth Man.

Per Trilly, in response to a UK question about Chaz’s visit/timeline: “UK sources said the visit went well - as they always do. One source said they’re concerned about the draw to home and UT having the last pitch. They didn’t get a great feel for a timeline from him - said he seemed torn on the decision.”

:)
Have they ever said that anybody has ever had a bad visit? One would think it’s Heaven, Valhalla and Nirvana all rolled into one and nobody would ever turn them down if they offer.

Have you ever seen any school say the recruit had anything but a Unicorn and Rainbows visit?

That was a skillset that Dalton possessed. Different players bring different skillsets to the table. Lanier is not now, and will not become, that TYPE of shot taker. He is not a rise up over a defender, high-release pull-up off the dribble shot taker. I guess if that is what people are expecting when they watch his shot then that would be an issue. The shots that you watch him take when you watch video of him are catch and shoot and some off the dribble around screen types of 3 point shots. That type of shot is different. I do not think his shooting mechanics/form will fundamentally affect his ability to take the shots he will be asked to take for this team. If we ask him to take the shots DK was taking after multiple dribble/backdown crab dribble moves and just elevate and shoot over the top of the defender then the coaches would be putting him a position to not be successful.

What do you mean it was hard to choose? Now I don’t believe you really saw the future.
