2024 Transfer Portal Thread

Agreed. Poor man's Dalton Knecht. Like you said, he's not as explosive/athletic, but he's one of those "shifty" penetrators that's clever about using their body to protect the ball as they take it to the rim. Yeah, I like this kids game. Having said that, is he the best fit and biggest need for next year given that we have Carr? Or are we looking to recapture the Knecht vibe for a second season? Does he want to follow that one year legend and fan favorite with all the comparisons? Just wondering.
Also he has multiple seasons left. So in theory, he has two years to develop under Barnes and get coached tougher.

Updated list, removed Edwards with his commitment to Louisville, added Aaron Scott & Cade Tyson. Bolded names are ones we’ve had some level of contact with, unbolded names are guys with connections to the program and/or staff but haven’t verified connection to this point.

I’ve heard zero visitors this weekend, but 2-4 next weekend. You hearing anything on confirmed visits?

“A few games” in his 90 game career he has only scored 10 points or more 26 times and 22 were this season. His rebounding has been even less consistent. Aidoo has developed very well in his time here, but he’s been inconsistent and it’s fair to be frustrated by it as fans.
Aidoo has been the best true center on Tennessee's roster in a while. These numbers are out of context... 1st season he barely played he came onto the team with a loaded roster... As s soph he played behind Olivier & Uros & Phillips - you are not going to score and double figures a lot with the minutes he was getting... It's just a fact. This year in a starting role he was excellent in one of our most consistent players all year. Aidoo was actually second on our team this season in (per) player efficiency rankings only behind Dalton. And if he gets as many blocks as a senior as he did this year he will be second all time in Tennessee Volunteers history in blocked shots... And that is a big deal for someone with not much playing time his first two seasons. The Aidoo hate from the Tennessee fan base is just wild. He wasn't himself in March madness and wasn't feeling well. I seen him at the Pratt pavilion and he visibly looked unwell. And makes since seeing that the flu was going around with Vescovi etc...

BJ Freeman is a scoring machine, similar path that DK followed, was at a Juco then came to UW-Milwaukee.

To me, Knecht really needs to be seen as a one-off, a kid blossoming and having a generational season, not something that you can reasonably expect to find again in a portal player. It was a fluke in that no one could have possibly foreseen the season the kid had, and to find as humble and hard working a kid in this day and age to walk in and say "coach me hard" and be accepted the way he was by program veterans is beyond a needle in a haystack. I wouldn't want to place that kind of expectation on any transfer or recruit.

Haven’t heard anything confirmed, but next weekend would make sense for a visit weekend given it’s O&W game.

Again haven’t heard anyone confirmed, but some names that seem to have some traction so would make sense: Chaz Lanier, BJ Freeman, Darlinstone Dubar, Aaron Scott, Cade Tyson, Saint Thomas, Frankie Fidler, Tucker Anderson, Eric Dailey, Malik Dia.

Again things move a mile a minute so half of these names could be off the board by next weekend, but I would think some visitors will come from the above list.

Good point. I'd say chances of a portal player being more like Tyreke Key are greater than them turning into the next DK.

Well, this guy is 6’7” and experience. Carr is 6’5” and will be getting his feet wet. I don’t think they would play the same position either. I see Tyson as more of a 3/4 and Carr as a 2/3. I think Tyson would be the ideal Knecht replacement. Carr is coming off the bench anyway.

I see adding Tyson making our starting lineup look like,

ZZ
Maschack
Tyson
Awaka
Aidoo

That’s is a lot of length and athleticism and a nice mixture of offense and defense.

My guess is BJ Freeman, Darlinstone Dubar and Eric Dailey.

Especially since he was a one and done type player here.

In Tyson's defense, he could in theory be here for multiple seasons so the rush to progress doesn't have to be immediate like DK's

This. Replacing DK is going to be a multi-player effort next season. We can do it, but expecting any one single guy to come in and have a similar impact is crazy and unfair to our new players.

Yes, DK was generational. However, I think next year with more balanced scoring we may be tougher to defend than we were this past year since we likely won't have that guy that teams can single in on.

Agreed. If you get Lanier and Tyson and both can average 10-12 a night on 38-40% three point shooting, as well as our current pieces continuing to improve, you’re likely in just as good, if not better, a spot than we were this year. Loved DK, but would like to see a more balanced scoring effort next season - it was nearly impossible for us to get back into an offensive flow all year once we deferred to DK, even on a short spurt (Purdue game a shining example of this).

Yes, also if we could somehow convince Mack to come off the bench for a year we would be set at pg for the next 3 years but idk how willing he would be to do that.

Ah yes using the Kentucky narrative that DK was are only scoring threat on offense and then using the Purdue game where one player scored more than half their points…that’s quite the argument lol

Think you see Malik Dia go to Vandy

He's not wrong. Way too many times did we, as a team, wait around for DK to be the only source of offense. Even more prominent in games where ZZ was ineffective. Aidoo was too inconsistent and not assertive enough, offensively, on most nights against sizable frontcourts. JJJ, Gainey, and Santi had moments, but nothing consistent. The Purdue game was a great example of it. The UK game at home, as well. DK going for 40 doesn't matter if the rest of the team combines for 20. All @berryvol is saying is that more options replacing DK isn't necessarily a bad thing.

I think most of us aren't saying replacing DK, you're replacing his role. Cause if we strike lightning in the portal again then we're going to the Final Four next year.

But I think these are the best options to fill the role of a big wing that can score at 3 levels aka DK replacement

BJ Freeman G UW-Milwaukee 6’6” 200lbs 1 year
Darlinstone Dubar G Hofstra 6’6” 207lbs 1 year
Aaron Scott G North Texas 6’7” 190lbs 1 year
Cade Tyson F Belmont 6’7” 200lbs 2 years
Saint Thomas F Northern Colorado 6’7” 200lbs 1 year
Frankie Fidler F Omaha 6’7” 200lbs 1 year
Tucker Anderson F Central Ark 6’9” 190lbs 3 years

Now which you think is the best option is up to you, for me personally BJ Freeman, Darlinstone Dubar, & Cade Tyson my top choices.

Love Frankie Fidler's game and would have him up there, but I just don't think we will be able to get him. Think he's going to Nebraska or Wisconsin.

It seemed to get worse after DK hit a couple of shots. In the second half of Purdue game, there were times when everyone stood still waiting for ZZ to get it to a doubled DK. It was torture to watch. Tossing it to a 7 4” guy to take a two footer is not nearly as preventable as giving the ball to a (doubled) big wing thirty feet out. With Edey dropping, it left his only option as shooting from thirty or driving into big traffic. He was so much better, in past games, playing inside the offense and using isolation when it was there.
