2024 Transfer Portal Thread

Here’s my thing, would Lanier be okay coming off of the bench next year? I’d have to think Mashack would be in line to start.
I wouldn’t pencil Mashack into a starting spot. Mashack needs to improve a lot on offense. He needs to quit botching those close shots and layups he seems to miss frequently. He also needs to become more confident and aggressive on offense. Mashack has shown he has a mid range shot and this year he shot a decent percentage from three; however I hope Barnes brings someone in to challenge Mashack for the starting role at the 3. Mashack needs to change his mindset on offense if he is going to be a starter.

Mashack will improve on offense or have the same role he has had with this team. Not that there is anything wrong with that role. It's very important to have that off the bench defender for 15 or 20 minutes a game but a one diminsional player is not jumping to full on 30+ minute starter role.

Bobby Jones made a nice career out of being an elite defender. Mashack, for all his offensive limitations, is a super tool to have when facing a team that's got an elite perimeter player. Just latch Mashack on him then focus on the other 4.

This is pure comedy. Thank you for the laugh this morning.

This. Portal is filled with talent. Just about every player on that Arkansas roster felt like they were contributing to a toxic environment. None of that here please.
Plus, anyone at UK not going pro will probably be in the portal soon enough. There are multiple toxic environments to choose from. No need to be in a hurry. 🤣

To be honest though, I don't know that Mashack has any offensive limitations.

in 1420 minutes he's gone 126 of 292 shooting the ball 43.2% FG, 100 of 215 were 2PT shots for 46.5% and he's 26 of 77 from deep for 33.8%. His FT % being 62.9% is pretty bad, but he was 72% this season.

He also has 216 career rebounds, 109 assists, 92 steals and just 77 turnovers.

I think he's just not had the opportunity to really showcase his offense. A career 3 attempts a game guy thus far. But on the year his FG and 3PT percentages were higher than any guard on the team not named Dalton Knecht that shot more than 2 a game.

Ziggy at 1Shak at 3 and get Justin Edward's from KY for the 2 he was ours before last MN Cal pixie dust. That would look good to start season. In CHRIST Alone

I agree. There are glimpses of some really good things with him. He needs to be nudged to drive the ball more. It's looked good at times.

This is speculative, but I wonder if Cade is a better option than either. If he went to UCA, would he have put up comparable numbers? Obviously I don’t know, but do think Cade has the same/possibly better tools than Anderson. Finally— If we’re going to recruit a four that stretches, I hope we can adjust to use him that way. I did a great job of replying without answering your question. In watching limited video, I think I agree. Anderson plays hard, and seems to push action. He is decisive and seems comfortable taking what he’s given. He could be good.
Agree. I thought Cade looked really good in his early minutes this season.

Curious if we'll land anyone without a visit, I know this weekend with the O&W game there will be quite a few basketball visitors.

I really like Lanier and think he could be an upgrade over Santi (and I'm a huge Santi fan). I don't think anyone in the portal is an upgrade over DK, but stranger things could happen. But if you land a couple of bigger wings like Saint Thomas, Dubar, Tyson, Freeman or even Tucker Anderson there is potential to have more balance on the court scoring than we had this year.

Assuming we retain everyone (I know, unlikely) I wonder if we take 2 from the portal and keep that last spot open for Summer evals.

Right we aren't getting another DK this year. But if we can upgrade the offensive production of Santi and JJJ then the team will be more balanced offensively.

The DK explosions were awesome to watch but sometimes did lead to rest of the team being crippled if he wasn't on fire. With more balanced scoring and 2 seniors who became extremely timid to even try to score I think the offense should be ok with the right portal additions.

Not sure...can't remember a time where Barnes went into Summer with a free spot. Seems he likes to have all 13 for Summer to see what he has.

My thoughts are

3 positions to replace DK/Santi/JJJ... so 36.4 ppg or roughly 12 ppg per player. That seems a lot more possible than finding a 20 ppg guy.

Doesn't have to be all portal guys either, return ZZ and Aidoo if either of them increase their PPG from last season (which seems possible for both) then you can also make up the lost production.

I'd REALLY like for us to have 4 players that are comfortably scoring 10+ ppg.

Tennessee had an open scholarship in the summer of 2021 when Michael Schwartz was at Peach Jam and happened to see a young point guard named Zakai Zeigler. He enrolled at UT and played that same year.

If you don’t give ZZ some relief next season I think we’ll be lucky to be in the same shape we were this past season. He’s tough and can play 37-40 minutes a game but whether he or Barnes wants to admit it not only to us but themselves is a different story. Needs to play no more than 32 minutes and I think you’ll see him annd the team improve exponentially.
Lazy take...facts don't support this and data has shown coaches shorten their rotation in the tourney so the best players play more (which is what we did with ZZ).

Knew we snagged ZZ up after NSD didn't realize it was that late in the year though same class had Tamba signing July 27th. But not a typical occurrence in Rick's time here.

I think it'll depend on which of the portal players we can get...if they can land 3 of the guys they want I'm sure they'll take all 3, but if they miss on landing a 3rd they really want I guess it's very possible they hold on to a spot to see what they find after summer.

When ZZ announced his commitment to UT (that August I believe), he was already listed in the UT directory

Yeah, but wasn't here for summer practice sessions. I mean Schwartz is also not on staff anymore so the trend in Barnes' tenure has been to have his scholarships filled for summer, but it's possible this year that may not be the case.
