2024 Transfer Portal Thread

Bobby Jones made a nice career out of being an elite defender. Mashack, for all his offensive limitations, is a super tool to have when facing a team that's got an elite perimeter player. Just latch Mashack on him then focus on the other 4.

As a Sixer fan who loved Bobby Jones, he was actually an excellent offensive player - solid, consistent jumper and an elite finisher on the break - but he accepted his role on those Sixer teams as the 6th man, defensive stopper, and Jack of all trades. BJ didn't start, but he closed every game.

I get that and I’m not saying that to argue with you… but wouldn’t someone random saying they’re worried about something happening just be speculation?

So far I've seen 3 names mentioned, 2 are currently in the portal... feels like there's more than speculation behind it.

I think the fact DJ hasn’t entered yet tells you what both Stoerner and I said, many thought he was already gone to the portal a month into the season, not the case. He loves it here and wants to be here, he dug himself a hole and had to deal with the consequences, he very well may find himself on next years roster. I think as of now everyone is “favored” to return, with that said you never know what 1 phone call can do and change things, giving the odds I’m sure we will see another entry at least, but right now I feel that everyone is leaning to return.
This didn’t age well.

These decisions aren't always the players' to make, either. DJ may have wanted to be here and the staff didn't believe he could live up to his end of the bargain. He could have also wanted to be here, but not risk things if he had a zero tolerance policy going forward. Lots of potential moving parts in that tenuous situation.
The Grant interview made it pretty clear that Barnes wanted people weeded out each off season. I'm surprised DJ lasted two years.

I’m in the minority here I think, I want Awaka to stay but I’d also not be overly upset if he left. I like our young, albeit unproven, talent in the post and while we’d definitely be thin for depth inside I feel like the upside is still there. Of the 4 posts I think Awaka has the lowest ceiling in todays game.

I’d be more upset at Aidoo leaving than Awaka. Just the way we play and their skill sets I feel like one more year of Aidoo helps us more than people realize.

I guess you're using Schofield as the comp because he was in Barnes' doghouse for a while. But he averaged 19mpg / 8ppg his first 2 seasons. If people were calling for him to be forced out during that time when we had little talent on the roster, then they were being silly. DJ, on the other hand, has logged 3 total minutes in 2 seasons. I'm not saying he should be forced out, but this doesn't feel similar to Schofield.
It's a pretty wild comparison. Admiral started 24 games in his first two seasons here. DJ hasn't played 24 minutes in that time frame. He may or may not go on to succeed, but a scholarship has a lot of value and it looks like the staff has decided it's best used in another direction.

the fact that DJ announced he’s transferring a few hours after this is just comical lol

It’s not a comparison at all. It’s just two examples of fans deciding when it’s time to cut bait.

To update

Freddie & DJ in portal = 2 spots
DK, Santi, JJJ graduating = 3 spots

Bishop incoming = 1 spot

We have 4 spots open as of now. Hopefully Awaka stays put and we don't lose anyone else, filling 4 spots in the portal is going to be a pretty big challenge. Any HS players still available that we're thinking about?
About to be some KY commits available that may not want to spend a year in Fayetteville, AR. (It ain’t the end of the world but you can see it from there.) One of the recruits just decommitted.

Yeah, put this in the regulars thread but a couple of Arkansas/Kentucky commits that we offered might decide to head somewhere else with the coaches they committed to moving.

Jalen Shelley, we offered early but never got a visit he picked Arkansas. Missouri kid that's a 6'8" SF and top 100 4 star
Somto Cyril, we offered he picked Kentucky. Georgia kid that was originally from Chattanooga 6'10" C and top 50 4 star

I don't really recall any great clamoring to cut bait with AS, he was playing 20 mpg his sophomore year. But even if that was so, moving on from Jefferson is a very different prospect, he's been a complete non factor for two years now.

That was also pre Transfer Portal as we now know it. There are a lot of immediate impact guys available in the current landscape. Before, you just banked on another high school recruit that might develop into something.

Again my post doesn’t have anything to do with comparing the two players. Yes, people wanted Admiral out when he was in the doghouse, making the ignorant comments even more absurd. My comment had to dowith fans who’ve spent zero minutes with a player, seen zero practices and know absolutely nothing about them deciding when it’s time to let them go.

After searching the board for Admiral and transfer, looks like BTO was suggesting he may not have a place here after year two, because he didn't have a position and incoming freshman Pons was going to take his back up minutes if he didn't get his act together. So I guess there was some chatter about it. But Admiral was generally defended in the conversation.

DJ Jefferson may be Michael Jordan in hiding, but I can't fault anyone for thinking it's time to move on, fans, staff, or DJ himself.

Maybe Cade will red shirt this season since that was the plan for this year? He has the appearance of needing time to mature and add weight. Just a thought as I know nothing
I am not sure he needs to add a lot of weight. Hi is already pretty strong. Just needs more coaching and experience, especially for the 4 position. He also bette range with his shooting.

If I was a bettor I’d wager the DJ lands with a former Barnes assistant. Schwartz. English. Lanier. Oliver. Or maybe follow somebody on the current staff if they get a head coach job.

I'd love a lineup of ZZ, Lanier, Mashack, Thomas, and Aidoo. I think it's clear we need more than 1 guy that can go get us a bucket. That's why UConn is so good imo.
I’d get Dubar and see if Mashack is willing to play 6th man. He’d definitely get 6th man of the year.

ZZ, Lanier, Thomas, Dubar, Aidoo would be a literal dream starting line up. Then you would have Mashack, Awaka, Gainey, Carr, JP, all coming from the bench. We would be so deep.
