I definitely remember Regina Clark and Peggy Evans. Regina came in with Dena Head the 88-89 season. She was quick and had some amazing hops. For a 5-7 guard she could really get up.

we are in their sites,,,but are we making ourselves a target,,,No I figure Hagerman would get the spot over a HS player bc she is a transfer

Nothing against Hagermann tho,,,she is a fierce PG with great court vision...I just see a reluctance to go after HS recruits so far

I mean what in the world are we going to do with yet another point guard? At some point roster balance has to be a thing. Flaming roster imbalance by class and position is what got us in the mess we're in.

Also, at some point playing time has to enter the conversation.

I think Kim is making the same mistake Kellie made,,,not realizing where she is v where she succeeded

In Marshall, like other lower level D1's the teams are made up of mostly juco and D1 down-transfers who want more to be a big fish in a smaller pond...HS elites are unattainable

Kellie was a a mid-level D1,,,same theory

This is the SEC,,,you live and die by your foundation players in this level,,not your Juco's and portal players,,,they fill needs and are important to finishing a team...But aren't useful in creating a foundation/// case in point, Kellie had some of the top portal players and arguably the TOP one in RJ,,but what did it do for our foundation?...She was here 5 years and look at her left-over foundation HS recruits

Yeah I meeaaan, it would been nice if we got Barker or Dauda, but it is what it is.🤷

Yeah but the problem is not wanting the right foundation players, it's being able to get the right foundation players. Two very different things.

Looks like Kim, exactly like Kellie, is going to have to try to do more w less in order to attract the right players. Kellie never could, sure hope Kim can.

And I continue to maintain playing time, being subbed for every 3 or 4 mins, is a big drag on landing elite players. I wish CKC wasn't dragging that as additional baggage.

To get those foundation players we have to make an effort and I know right now that that The effort up to now has not been made

I don't accept that you "know" bc I "know" you. Because they're not contacting Maddie Hawk or some such player you talk to? I don't doubt you have a "source", it's a neverending quest with you. But I'll bet that efforts you "know of" is more the case than you "know" they aren't being made. Because why? Why would Lazo come here in this situation especially and sit on his a*s? Doesn't make sense.

Bottom line, they're going to have to go out and win games and look good doing it to shed the lovable loser image we're stuck in. Then elite interest will perk up. This is same as it everwas the last 5 yrs.

Building on your point,. Kim Caldwell, a coach with one year of D1 experience at Marshall, has "?" around her that top HS recruits are going to want answered before committing. Honestly, I am pleasantly surprised at the success CKC has had in the portal but it was never a reasonable expectation that she would come in close on a cadre of elite HS recruits at the get go.

From a HS recruiting standpoint, she needs to exceed expectations for next year. Finishing 10th won't cut it at all. She really needs to be have a top 4 finish, let's say USC, LSU, TEXAS, and then the LVs (ahead of OK, KY, Vandy etc). and be competitive with those top 3 (Plus get to a S16). If she does that as a first year coach that catches the attention of the 5 star recruits.

Since this conversation has circled back to Kellie, her death knell, in hindsight, was when she could not get past the S16 with Horston and Jackson (who by seasons' end was well integrated into the team). Of course Key was missing, but two elite players and a decent support cast should have been able to get further.

I think that squandering of talent hurt her HS recruiting a bit. And we of course know that the NIL was a big problem. Kellie was NOT actively ignoring the top tier and only looking to sign 3 star mid major recruits. She was the perrennial "close but no cigar" coach when it came to both recruiting and game management.

Any one saying that she and staff did not try to sign elite HS is not credible, the evidence to the contrary is massive. Making the same claim about CKC seems even less so.

We have got 4 players. Very good players from the portal. Now we need foundation players that are going to be gonna be here for 4 years... Let's see what happen.

Avoided the logical question of why. That's fine, we'll see what we get. But if we don't get "foundational" players it's not necessarily bc the staff didn't try. That's just nonsensical beyond belief.

I answered why in the previous post... Coach kim is coming from a environment where she won with juco and portal players. She could not recruit elite High school players to go to Marshall.... So it was not one of her main focuses.

And she certainly couldn't record elite high school players prior to that

I'd be a little surprised if we get any HS recruits to commit before we run FSU out of the gym in December. Really good HS players are going to want to see this system work IRL and I don't blame them. Finish top 3 in the SEC plus get NIL house in order and recruiting will not be a problem.

She got elite high school players to Glenville that helped her win a national championships and those two players went on to be the best players on Division 1 Buffalo team as GS. You adapt to your school resources... For example. South Florida gets juco and international players. Troy is successful because they recruit Juco Kids. ULM had a pretty good season because they recruited former players and Juco/Division 1 transfers. Im sure CKC will recruit from all three. Getting HS kids is a little different today. It is like they are coming to be developed into what you want them to be for your team. If they excel they may go somewhere else for the bigger dollar. Kids are not really playing for the tradition anymore and etc. It is what it is. You sell them on what you can do for them on and off the court and how you can get them to the WNBA. That is what Dawn is selling at South Carolina that is why former players are making calls for her.

All of which is exactly why she hired Lazo. I can't believe he gave up the assoc coach job at MSU to come here and be told by a D2 coach not to do his job. No way. Still makes no sense.
