2024 TRANSFER TRACKER

Her saying that is not the way her team at Marshall played. They pressed full court on made baskets and not on misses. They were usually running back to defensive positions on misses.

On that point, her press conference was a PR event for White and CKC. At the time, the national conversation was "Tennessee just replaced KJH with who? from where?, WTH!!!". It is telling that when the rumor of CKC dropped on a Sunday before the official announcement, just about every one on this board went "no freakin' way, that is twitter nonsense'. CKC has since won just about every one over but at the first press conference, there were a lot of skeptics.

So, I think the message was to convey that the LVs had been playing underachieving, boring basketball and CKC was going to be bring in a new era. And so giddy in the moment, we got we are going to press nonstop for 40 minutes and shoot a 1000 threes a game!!! Reality will be the corrective.

The thing is Tess and Sara can’t dribble to create shots, only Jewel can do that, we need more of that.
That’s where ball movement and spacing comes in. Teams like Princeton and Gonzaga over the years have done it without players that can create their own shot, but it takes a really well trained unit to do so.

Agree with all that. Ruby, Kapinus, and King seem a step ahead to me. I wonder if playing time might be an issue with any. We knew that would turn some away. Some players want sustained mins and not short bursts. For some, rythmn is a big thing. I know Rickea said that alot, depended on getting and staying in rythmn.

We need some more proven scoring. Then when all the potential scoring blooms we'll be sitting pretty.
I think that would be a nice haul after missing out on the top players, we get the next tier of players. That’s about all we can ask for at this point.

But they can shoot in transition, which should be the critical skill in a fast paced, transition oriented offense.

At some point, you may need to accept that the LVs have the players they have and that they are capable of making plays.

I like basketball that is fun to watch. I still don't like losing 97 to 92 anymore than 69 to 62 so I hope were mostly on the winning side of those scores.

From the Marshall team stats posted above, they took over 1000 3 pt attempts at a team 34% clip. Based upon the SEC numbers also posted above (page 2 of the pdf), the highest 3 pt % allowed in the league was by UF which gave up 33%. Many of the teams in the SEC were able to hold opponents to 30% or below. This will be worth watching. The SEC is notorious for defense over the years and is usually number one in FG% defense, 3’s included.

Texas and OK’s 3 pt % defense numbers from last season:

Marshall three point shooting last year:

LV’s 3 pt shooting last season, Spear, Puckett and Darby obv stand out from returnees

The point here is that if the 3 pt% drops from 34% to league average of say 30%, that 4% diff on over a 1000 attempts only comes out to about 1.5 less threes made per game, so it isn‘t fatal in itself, but it bears watching if the league defenses at this level can impact it much more than that. All the more reason to pull in some good 3 pt shooters.

I can’t talk about this with my partner anymore because he gets too mad 😭 at first he was telling me I had to give CKC a chance, and now he’s preparing his “it ain’t working” chants 😭
I was the same way before but with the way things went I said I need to give it a chance at least to see what we get in the 2025. Pass, if we strike out I would agree that this isn’t going to work.

You still need to be able to beat players off the dribble, I’m not trying to be Princeton or Gonzaga, i want to be a Champion.

That’s all good in the first half, but how about crunch time and in the tournament when things slow down, u need to be able to adapt.

Yes but I was responding to someone that was talking about Tess and Sara.
Burt it is relevant. You said that only Spear can create off the dribble but so can Wynn, Wells (if healthy), Boyd, Cooper, and now Spearman (Perhaps with more to sign).

Their success depends on having shooters who can spread the floor with Spear, Puckett, and Darby but you know this so.....

Things will slow down come conference tourney and NCAA time, defenses always go to another gear then. Same for last few minutes of every game as we all know. That’s where contested clutch shooting is paramount. Have to have some reliable shooters like RK at those times.

Im not sold on Spencer either cause I don’t love the idea of a player who would openly mock her teammates on podcasts and their social media.

Very interesting. Tell me more! I was more stoked about Spencer, as we don't want to ignore a former Freshman of the Year of the SEC who had good stats back then. So, trying to get stoked about this, I watched the posted highlight of her making a shot from at least beyond 2/3 of the full court right as a buzzer was going off to end the quarter. Imagine how excited any of our teams would have been for that to happen. At Arkansas, there was some brief celebration but then Spencer never seemed as excited as you would you think. Moreover, as she was walking away from the celebration her affect didn't match the occasion: at best her face was neutral but it almost either seemed troubled, off-put by something, numb, etc. Body Language is an area of expertise for me, so this actually stuck with me ever since I saw it. It is subtle, but almost anyone would have a minute of joy/excitement, togetherness with team after making such a shot. The last time I felt strongly this way on a consistent basis with a LV player was Diamond, which even a kindergartner might observe that something was wrong with her given her frequent pained expressions. Any way, I was ready to just chalk it up to me being over-analytical, but then I read your reaction about Spencer apparently not being a good teammate. Hmmmm. I hope the staff really looks deeper into this and get info about the dynamics that totally broke up that team. It may not be Spencer, but something was in the water there.

Sounds like an event full of fibbing! PR event indeed. DW fibbed about winning on the one year plan and CKC fibbed about her playing style. Very 2024 PR but helluva way to start a clean slate. Post truth world I know, I'm a slow adjuster.

Wynn can barely dribble and can’t shoot or make layups. I’m not sold on Wells at all, I don’t know much about Cooper or Boyd to make an opinion yet, but I’ll take your word for it.

Totally might not be Spencer! Her problems were apparently with Taliah Scott, and who knows who started what and why it persisted and evolved to the extent that Spencer was popping off on social media. I also really want to be excited about her, but I worry when you see a player willing to openly and negatively engage with her teammate. Gotta trust the staff that if they are interested in her they know things we don’t… So interesting you found that clip though that kind of validates her displeasure last season!

Truth is that she got Mashall in the top 5 in so many Division I stats of a team that had always been miles away from this in one year. I think her statements came more from confidence and enthusiasm where DW's projection for next year seemed more like hot air to counter initial negative reactions.
