2024 WNBA Discussion Thread

I think the New York Liberty winning their first championship after having come so close several times over the years does more for the league, IMO, than Minnesota winning their fifth.

The Lynx is an amazing, well coached team and I like them a lot. But I'm genuinely happy for the Liberty. Seeing Sue Wicks tearing up in the crowd got me, I'll tell ya! Back in the day I traveled to MSG many a time for Liberty games, and their fans were then, and still are, outstanding. I'm happy for them, too.

Next season is going to be really something!

Oh, and P.S.: I agree that sure looked like a bogus call to me.

That said, lord knows every game these days has its share of those it seems. With any luck, officiating can somehow be improved soon.

Good on NY for getting their first ring but happy to see them transition into the new heel of the league. They will get some well-deserved hate for this game, it was terrible.
But it's not the Liberty players' fault. The officiating is to blame, not the players.

Hmm. For starters they need better feeder pools for the officials. It’s a ground up system. We know how difficult it can be to get a good crew in the SEC.

Other topic: New York had that arena packed to the rafters! Great atmosphere for a Game Five!

Sadly, I'm beginning to wonder if it can. I'm afraid the game has gotten too fast and the players too big and strong to officiate correctly. I don't get how they continue to get it wrong on review though. That clear path no call was ridiculous.

I usually think it's general incompetence and not bias, but the Lynx were the victims of every single very bad call and non call in the second half, in the most crucial of situations.

Coupled with the embarrassing performances by SI and BS, this feels like a * championship.

Yeah, it was that the play was reviewed and the bad call reinforced that was so egregious. I mean, it would beceasy to make a bad call in those fast-paced games. But to actually have an opportunity to replay it, from several angles and even in slow motion if they want, and STILL miss it? Yikes.

But again, it was NOT (and never is) the players' fault, but they'll bevthe ones who receive all the bashing for it. The players deserve better than to be tagged with asterisks after their championships.

I 100% agree advances in the women's game have outpaced the officiating. I've been saying that for years. Really, it's even worse in the college game IMO.

Reeve makes a great point. One way to improve reviews is have a third party ref do it. Everyone is hesitant to say they were wrong so reviewing your own call starts out with a strong bias.

Truly I think they should do away with reviews altogether it adds nothing to the game imo.

Judgement is often as bad the second time as it was in live action.

I’m ok with review who the ball was out on under 2 minutes and clock issues. Beyond that it’s a waste of time. Officiating is part of the game, good and bad. Live with it.

(Says me, who complains more about officiating when the Lady Vol play than any other poster in history.) 🤣🤣

Were you being serious about doing away with reviews? That would be disastrous! 😲

Sore loser considering the salaries in the W the cap is lame lol. I don’t really think the Liberty roster is anymore talented than Minny. Just a little more experienced. Of course a player like Laney or Sloot is going to command more $$$ Alana Smith or Zandalasini but that doesn’t mean they’re that much better in reality.

If it was just the bad calls it would be one thing but combined w SI and SB going 5-34 it just feels like a strange championship for those two. Kinda happened in spite of them not because of them.

Shady call at end of regulation time with Lynx up by a deuce. Luckily for the Liberty Stewart didn't cough up the victory like she did in two prior free throw attempts.

Politics in ever sport now. Good grief.

Lynx got shafted. The league wanted Liberty to win the Championship..

They do this in the Barclays premier league in their Video Assisted Review. Guess what? Aggrieved fans, find reasons to believe the VAR official was biased toward one team or another.

There is simply no way to regulate controversies over close, judgment calls.

I personally think the game should have not gone to overtime (i.e., that should have been a no call situation on Stewart's "fouled" shot). But, the fact remains that the Lynx still controlled their own fate and played very sloppily in the OT.

Collier not getting any FTs is another questionable ref situation but this is not the first game where games have been decided by FT imbalances. In the end, the Liberty were primed to lose with Stewart and Ionescu playing so poorly but the Lynx could not close the deal.

If it had been actual judgement calls like block/charge that would have been one thing. But the travel was a badly missed call and the foul was a wrong call. That's what review is for.

All of basketball has to find a way to make officiating better.

And the commish wearing a NY Skyline Dress and saying the trophy was "where it belongs" was just insult to injury. The W needs to move on from this mess ASAP. Let's talk about the lottery, the expansion draft and filling coaching vacancies. Less said by them about last night the better.
