2024 WNBA Discussion Thread

I just read that Sabrina Ionescu suffered a high grade unlna collateral ligament tear in her shooting hand in game 4. This would make it hard to shoot in your typical way. I didn't think her 1 in 19 shooting could have been all nerves and defense, but that's all I had. She is wearing a hand splint now, and hopeful that she won't need surgery.

I didn't know that Missouri was a hot bed for women's basketball. Bring it on, I'm sure they could probably draw about 2000 fans a game. No brainer, that's right, no brain at all.

It doesn't have an NBA team, and the WNBA regular season overlaps in the deadtime where Kansas, Missouri, Kansas State are all not playing basketball.

A "hot bed"? Nah, the actual "hot beds" are all markets that have already been tapped. But "an obvious area to expand to"? Sure. There aren't very many metros larger that lack an NBA team. [and also don't already have a WNBA team]

And there are even fewer larger than KC, which lack both an NBA and NHL team.

Stephanie White named Fever’s new head coach. Is this hire really an upgrade?
she's a "name" coach...had you heard of Christie Sides before CC made her famous?

when coaching females the recipe for success is still the same
for a team to reach that next level,,,the coach has to take some of the attention off of the players and Stephanie White can do that

Think about it
NCAA's greatest coaches: Dawn, Pat, Geno, Tara, Kim, Brenda, Muffett the same thing can be said of all of them

No matter how great their players were, they were greater

A well-known coach can take some of the attention off of their team's players by name alone.

Well, I mainly know White (as a coach) for being the "game changing" hire who fizzled out at Vandy. On further inspection, she had a good debut as HC at Indiana but did not keep the momentum going in her 2nd season. All in all, did fine with Connecticut Sun but management obviously believed she was underachieving.

I think her rep does exceed her actual accomplishments. But if her group of players, including the most followed women's player in histor+y, need a coach who will shield them from attention, well that team is done before it begins.

I totally agree...but you know how it is with coaching,,,just as it was here,,... The "know-their-name " coaches get the shot before the new kids on the block get theirs

we see it in the pros all the time,,,the coach gets fired from 3 jobs then takes a team to the promise land and Shazaam,,,they're the it-coach again

Totally. I will add that in the college game, as you noted, "star coaches" can play the role of attention magnets. That function is not as common in the W. Among the current crop of coaches, only Beck Hammon seems to have that kind of celebrity status. Maybe White can do it at Indiana, as the prodigal daughter returning home, but she really did not play that role at Connecticut, where their games were always about Thomas and Bonner.

thats my prediction
Just like Shea at Vandy and Banghart at NC,,,it pays dividends

Ya never know , who expect bentonville , Arkansas to have one of the highest rated demographics for women’s basketball viewership? They were a serious contender for expansion back in 08 before ATL won the bid. They always float around when it comes to expansion but the market is just terrible for a player destination lol

Yes! She'll have to get back in the habit of hawking rebounds -- never her strong suit -- but she can do that. The rest of her game, and her body, is perfect for 3 x 3. Her natural game is to be moving off-ball and quick to put it up if she gets some space, so... YEAH. I like her chances against that competition.

I'm still hoping Rae will also be one of the last remaining Unrivaled picks. She hasn't committed to AU, which she played last year, nor overseas.

Jordan Horston recently committed to AU, which is being played in Nashville this yr. Disappointing, she should def be in Unrivaled.
