2024 WNBA Discussion Thread

Most frustrating thing is that this hasn’t just been given to Clark. She has earned every accolade she’s ever gotten. She works incredibly hard, she’s extremely competitive and very humble.

Making it about race is a disgrace. She has gotten the attention she has because of her play and her shooting. Nothing to do with her skin color.

Plenty of other white women have gone through the W. NONE of them had the game and appeal of Clark. Including Sabrina, Plum etc.
Making it about race drives clicks, divides and always has a victim and a villain. Helps media outlets continue to drive the hate in society in the name of sports.

Don’t disagree with a lot of your post but specifically did Candace get the amount of coverage and incredible build up CC has? CP was heralded for sure but nothing like CC which, in all honesty, is not great for CC.
Was coverage for WNBA, endorsements, anywhere near where it is today back in 2008? Candace isn’t a victim and her buildup was on par for the times.

Meanwhile, old NASCAR fans are rubbing their chins and thinking, "Haven't I seen this before? ...a sport with limited viewership suddenly catches fire with the viewing public because of some highly publicized physical conflict and bad blood on the track court?"

It was totally a warning. How many times have you seen people say such things about rookies coming into the NBA? Or the NFL? When Victor Wembanyama came into the Spurs, did you hear people on the Spurs talking about how he had to watch out, and how the NBA was totally different? All I recall were people talking about how he was a unique talent who could impact the game at the next level (and even if they commented on his need for growth, it was never a veiled warning). Clark could be that kind of player for the WNBA, but instead of discussing that, it's nothing but the pettiness of group rejection from everyone around her.

I hate playing into the steretypes, I really do, but there is a jealously and frustration behind a lot of thing that's unmistakable. And the word for it all is cattiness.
NBA players were very skeptical about LeBron as he was coming in. I'm not sure you hate playing into the stereotypes if you immediately jump to them

NBA is always looking for the next "great White hope" since Larry Legend.

I believe NBA has found him, goes by Luka gets more hate and criticism from fans.

Double whammy Caucasian and Foreign. I love Luka

the press around the WNBA has been whether the established stars have been slighted by the attention given to Clark. It does fit the catty stereotype and its not surprising, though disappointing, that the sports media falls into these old tropes about jealous women fighting for attention.

But, the players don;t have to conform to these cliches
Jealousy and resentment on the part of the vets is inevitable, they wouldn't be human if it didn't irk them to see a newby waltz in and be declared the savior. Even if it's true, maybe especially because it's true. Any of us would and probably have felt the same way at our job toward the young hotshot. Throw in the loaded subject of representation and we're off to the races.

It's how the vets react oncourt that matters, and you're right, confirming catfight cliches doesn't elevate the conversation. Of course there's certain welcome to league hard fouls to be expected. But what Carter did to Clark, even if in response to earlier jaw jacking and jostling, was over the top and damaging to her team. So was what AT did to Angel. It's also true that Thomas' choke hold takedown of Reese did not get the same framing as the Carter hip check, even though it was arguably more dangerous.

What a complicated, depressing mess; as Lucy said, just a shame. Says alot about us as a society I'm afraid. In the end the whole thing will probably boost viewership again, maybe compensating for the fact the Fever are awful and CC is not the be all end all player.

Not sure we the clickers get to put all the blame on "the media". They only put out there what we will buy. And we lap stuff like this up. It's chicken and egg, hard to say which came first and who led who. IMO media is identifying and capitalizing on the existing hate, not creating it. That part's on us.

Agree. Social media wasn't around then (lucky for then). CP got plenty in proportion with the status of the league at the time and amount of sports media available then. In fact she got enough throughout her career to make her the major media star and respected broadcaster she's been for years.

The nba has been passed that since Jordan. Over the years, you would be hard pressed to find more hyped players than Kobe or LeBron. The nba has gone all in on Victor Wembamyama being the future. Luka and jokic get there props as well but they have earned it.

I really liked TSpoons statement:

But Pat McAfee, good God man! Casually called CC a "white bi*ch" for starters:

I think he was trying to be hip hop cool, but ended up being that oblivious white guy who doesn't realize there's things they say that he can't get away with.

Anyway, everyone is talking about it; have heard it discussed on many cable news outlets. Sadly, it will be another ratings boost for all the wrong reasons.

Meanwhile, the Storm plays the 10 pm game tomorrow night on CBS Sports Network. The Sparks play the 10 p.m. game Wednesday night on league pass.

Thank you basketball Gods that Jordy, Mercedes, Rickea, and Rae are safely tucked away from all the madness way out yonder on the left coast. Diamond and Izzy are right up in it but so far have managed to stay out of the fray. Both are probably more focused on their own uncertain roles on the team.

Male Shock jock sports pundits taking an interest in the wnba is not necessarily a good thing…

By listening to talk shows and reading some post . The reason this is a issue isn't because Caitlin is a rookie who can freaking play the game well. The real issue is Caitlin is a White American from Middle United States.

Would I be ticked off of all the hoopla for Caitlin after busting my hump in the league for years? Probably. Although I would also understand that Caitlin brings views to this league that it has been starving for.

So the question is IF Caitlin was a black woman would there even be a issue?

This season's sh!tshow just proves that I was smart to give up on the WNBA. The entire league reeks of entitlement, perpetual victimhood and pettiness. Gone are the class acts like Lisa Leslie who were actually great ambassadors for the league. Current state is like a cross between Jerry Springer and Real Housewives. Hard pass for me.

Normalizing this type of race driven behavior can backfire spectacularly. It becomes justfied open season on the Tiger Woods and Serena Williamses of the White Sports World if people rationalize this type of behavior for a white players getting such attention and coverage in a predominantly black sport.

Cynthia Cooper, Tina Thompson, and even Rebecca Lobo should be given the most credit. These women were there when WNBA first started and now you never hear their names mentioned. Sad..
