2024 WNBA Discussion Thread

Per Draya, in the NBA, the Lakers and the Warriors remain the big rating draws, not much better teams like OKC. Star power and audience interest do not necessarily follow the good teams but the stars.

What is interesting to me is that WCBB rivalries have never carried over to the WNBA before.
Heard a good discussion of whether the W needs a rivalry to flourish. Made the good point that the NBA started as a barnstormer league with a carnival type atmosphere. Rivalries soon emerged bc we humans just love to be entertained by that stuff. It all goes heywire when it inevitably gets racialized though. Also there's that sexualized cat fight trope.

I think this one carried over bc it was basically born on social media and never left it. Just shifted location.

Tough games for sure but I am happy to see her get some accolades. She has been a been lost in the media coverage of rookies, wherre CC and AR have sucked up all the oxygen.
I'm sure RJ is well used to being ignored and snubbed, she spent all of last year doing it. And really it's been good for her to get to fly under the radar. With everything rookies go through and have to adjust to, I can't imagine how CC and Angel put up w all the rest.

Wilt versus Russell was one of the launch points to the modern NBA-- then Bird v. magic took it to a new level.

You would have thought CP3 v. Taurasi would have become a rivalry but much of their career was before social media really took off and the sports media interest just was not there.

Oh man, rewatching replay at halftime, that's a knee. And it's bad. Bless her heart.

Not to be dismissive of what looks like a major injury, but Azura Stevens is supposed to come back later this week.

Sun best D in league, Hamby only got 1 shot up. This is gonna get real ugly in the second half. They said Miller was going to manage minutes tonight and I'm sure he will. Rickea w 6 at halftime, 2 rebs and a steal but often stalled by the Sun D and lack of movement of teammates.

We all screamed for McDonald to start. She did and has 4 t.o.s in the first half.

Hard times for this team.

LOL Clarendon done lost her mind trying to mix it up w Bonner and Thomas.

Sparks just playing out the string, no organized offense. I don't think Rickea has gotten a shot up since early 2nd qtr. Sat most of the third qtr. Hope she'll get some time against the Sun second stringers in the 4th. Rae in but not getting much either. Hamby having another nightmare game. Just get this one over with.

News on Brink doesn't sound good.

Can't believe the Sparks kept it a decent 9 pt game, at least decent on paper. Bad night for them in every way.

Rickea never got in any offensive flow, but did get to the ft line a couple of times late, Ended w 10 pts on 3-7 shooting (way too few shots), team high 7 rebs, 2 assists and a steal, 2 t.o.s. Not a step back but not really a step forward. Rae played just under 7 mins, not much impact at all, 0-1 shooting.

Most important takeaway is Cam never came back to the bench. I'm afraid this is one of those sickening knee injuries.

Clarandon making a really bad decision here:

Rickea's reaction is hilarious. She points to the confrontation and everyone else jumps up but she stays glued to that chair with both hands, just watching kind of bemused.

Can't see it in this clip, but there were some fans in Vol gear in the front row near the Sparks bench. Not sure who they were, not Rae or Rickea's family.

Rickea is unflappable!

Rickea is unflappable!

I hope she stays that way. I have a feeling her mother long ago wisely counseled her daughter to be as tough and competitive as the best of them -- but never trashy.

I am so darn sick of the almost daily controversy now and really hope people can just calm down a little before it becomes an intolerable farce. I've watched the W from the start, so I remember it before it got so ridiculously dramatic and sure miss those days. 🫤

Also, just tried to watch the second half of Lynx/Dream but both teams are just so freaking boring to watch.

Storm/Aces should be a good game tonight. I’m thinking the Aces want some payback.

I never thought I'd see the day when Jewel Loyd scored only one point! Dang. She and Diggins-Smith just couldn't get it going tonight. Nice scoring game for Jordy, but the Storm ain't gonna win if neither Loyd nor Diggins are producing anywhere near their average.
Great game for Jordy, 18 pts on 6-10 shooting, very rare for her to shoot that much. Also 6 reb and 3 asst. She's def getting the starter mins now over Vivians. Good for her, she's playing so well and so comfortable in her role. Storm is slumping a bit now that they're playing better teams, but I still think Jordy will get a nice ride in the playoffs.

What a difference a true pg makes for the Aces. Gray had 7 assists in 15 mins in her first game back. Best they've played in ages. So funny what people enjoy watching. I don't enjoy watching the Aces or Aja Wilson at all, even tho they're usually the best team and she's clearly the best player. Opinions are like . . .

As long as the Wings and Sky exist, the Sparks won't necessarily finish last. They're playing right now and they're both just terrible. Struggling to hit the 20s midway thru the second qtr. Arike is bombing away 3-11. Angel and Kamilla have a ton of rebs, but that's bc tthey've only hit one shot btw them. Izzy and Diamond both played briefly and neither did much, except miss shots like everyone else, except Chennedy Carter who continues to be amazing.

Everyone's hurt. Saw a stat that injuries causing missed games is way up this yr vs this time last yr. Maddy Seigreist is now out for a few weeks for the Wings w a broken finger. She was having a breakout second year. Last night Rhyne Howard hurt an ankle, left the game and never came back. The dreaded "being evaluated" today. Some players are openly grumbling that the compressed pre-Olympic schedule means they don't get proper rest or recovery, leading to injury. Another mess for the W.

Edit to add: as I'm typing the Sky is suddenly going on a rampage, hitting shots and leads by 15, including a couple for Angel on putbacks. The poor Wings are a complete mess.

Really good article about Brink and who the Sparks and USA 3x3 teams may get to replace her, Rickea is also mentioned. Could be Hamby to replace Brink on the USA team. Now, if Rhyne Howard is out, one of these players mentioned might have to replace her as well.

Huge second half by Angel, got the rookie record for consecutive double doubles. It helped that McCown (and most of the Wings) quit early in the second half and Angel and Kamilla played volleyball at the rim the rest of the game. Sky got the Wind and I can't wait til the Sparks play the Wings again.

Chennedy Carter, man, easily the best player on the floor today.
