On the recruiting front Tennessee will be holding its breath this weekend while five-star Chris Cenac takes his official visit to LSU.
Cenac has taken previous visits to Houston, Auburn, Tennessee, Kentucky, and Arkansas.
The scuttlebutt out there suggests that this one is down to LSU, Tennessee and Houston. Some speculation has Tennessee and LSU as the two teams to beat.
LSU is the home state school (Cenac attends Link Academy in Missouri) and they’re getting the last visit. It’s a safe bet that they’ll be pulling out all of the stops this weekend to convince Cenac to stay in-state.
Tennessee most definitely impressed Cenac and his family in the recruiting process, but this could be a tough pull.
There had been some earlier speculation that Cenac might wait and not make a decision during the early period, which begins next week, but lately the buzz seems to suggest that he and his family are tiring of the recruiting process and could make an early decision.
Two other five-stars the Vols are heavily involved with do seem intent on waiting to make decisions, if not all the way to the spring, at least some time in the winter.
Top-five national prospect
Caleb Wilson and his family seem to have thoroughly enjoyed the recruiting process, having made official visits to Auburn, UNC, Tennessee, Stanford (old staff), UCF, Ohio State, and Kentucky. He also took an unofficial visit to UNC earlier this fall.
There is one more potential visit looming. Wilson postponed last week’s scheduled visit to Arkansas. If he intends to make an early commitment and still visit the Hogs that visit has to happen this week or next.
Kentucky seems to have a lot of momentum in this one.
The guy the Vols may covet the most—in our estimation—among that trio of five-stars is
Nate Ament, from Manassas, Va. A long and skilled wing Ament is a highly versatile offensive player.
He is also in no hurry whatsoever. Ament has long maintained that he intended to make a spring decision after watching his suitors this basketball season.
Ament has taken official visits to Texas, Louisville, and Tennessee this fall. He has future dates set with Notre Dame (11/9) and Kansas State (2/11). Duke is also majorly involved here. Kansas and Kentucky are hoping to get visits this winter.
The feeling we’ve gotten is that Ament’s visit to Tennessee with his family could not have gone better and that it was a very good fit on both sides.
Rick Barnes and associate head coach Justin Gainey were in Virginia last Friday to visit with Ament. Barnes seems to be putting as much personal effort into this recruitment as any we recall recently.
Tennessee is in the thick of it, but landing the No. 3 overall player in the nation won’t be easy.
