'22 SC SF Julian Phillips (Tennessee commit)

Pretty sure Bailey leaving doesn't help us with numbers because he wouldn't count against us next year anyway. Him staying or leaving is irrelevant numbers wise.
Yes, he would have counted. The scholarship limit waiver only counted for this season. Giving enrolled players the advantage of the additional Covid year, beyond this season, would cost any school a scholarship towards the 13 limit.

Edit: just saw @VolGee4's reply. He nailed it.

He's probably going to look at how well Jabari Smith played this year and think "That can be me." I would not be shocked at all to see him go there.....which sucks for us, but it is what it is.
Let’s hope he sees how good Chandler was and how he improved under Barnes.
Did Smith improve as the season progressed? I didn’t see it but I didn’t pay a lot of attention to Auburn this year.

Yes, Smith was always good, and little any coach could do in one season to make him remarkably better. Offseason, well, who knows. But if I'm Phillips, I'm looking at how Pearl's guards just played one-on-one all the time and rarely worked to scheme Smith into the game by making his guards be more disciplined. That would give me pause, but I'm speaking as a 42 year old, not a 17 year old being told you're my next Jabari Smith.

Smith showed up as a 6’-10” super athlete with a sweet jumper out to the 3 point line and that’s how he left which will be good enough to be a top 3 pick in the draft. Not sure what Auburn did to enhance those talents.
With Auburn's guards not getting him the ball, they probably hurt his top 3 stock already. He probably fell from 2 to 3 lol. So no, Auburn did nothing whatsoever to help Smith

Pretty much this. I don't have any faith that a 17-year old kid is going to look at this thing objectively. Plus, it's Auburn, so they'll probably take him to a nice little cabin and make him an offer that we probably aren't willing to match. That's how they landed Smith, let's be honest.

Hopefully these 17 year old athletes have family helping them make these decisions. Smith and Kessler’s families should know basketball yet they still went to Auburn so who knows?

Honestly, this may have been Pearl’s worst coaching job of his career. To have 2 post talents like Smith and Kessler yet allow your guards to gun away at will was coaching malpractice IMO.
That’s the way his offense has always been though, he wasn’t use to having two great great low post players

I don't know if his stock fell because of it, but the guards did not get him the ball. I have wondered if maybe that is why AU took a downturn towards the end of the year. Too many egos.

Jabari wouldn't have had the freedom he had at Auburn at a lot of places to show off his full arsenal. He had the green-light all game, no matter the situation. He was a top 10 projected pick coming in, now he's regarded as the #1-2 guy by most mocks now.

Jabari's stock next to AJ Griffin rose more than any other top freshman this season. It was the Chet/ Paolo draft last summer. Now it's a 3 headed monster with Griffin on the outside regarding the top freshmen.

Seeing how good Smith actually was, I agree that this wasn’t one of Pearl’s best coaching jobs. They ran up a lot of wins early with a relatively easy OOC schedule. And they had a very favorable SEC schedule too. The way they faltered at the end of the season reminds me of a few seasons he had at TN. His first season while we definitely over performed on the year, we lost 3 of our last 5 regular season games, lost in the first round of the SECT, needed a prayer by Lofton to not lose in the first round to 15 seed Winthrop and then lost in the next game. His 3rd season barely eked out a 1st round game in the sect and lost the next. Then looked pretty awful in the tourney. Took us until under 5 to start pulling away from 15 seed American, needed OT to beat Butler and then got absolutely steamrolled by Louisville. The next year lost in the first round to OK state. And of course his last season we completely imploded at the end of the year

Seems like it isn't the first time this has happened to him at Auburn either. Faltered down the stretch in 2017-18 and got blown out by Clemson in the second round of the tourney. Then they were on the same track during the 2019-20 season too before COVID canceled everything

Jabari Smith has always been a top 4-5 pick, even back in the preseason. Pearl didn't do anything to change his status.

I mean, that's not true.

Jabari at 10, From August 21: 2022 NBA Mock Draft: Paolo Banchero to Thunder, Chet Holmgren to Magic among way-too-early projections

Jabari at 8, from August 21: NBA Mock Draft 2022: All 59 picks, leading off with Chet Holmgren

Jabari at 6, from September 21: 2022 NBA mock draft: Chet Holmgren, Jalen Duren, Paolo Banchero, more

Jabari at 7, from August 21: 2022 NBA Mock Draft

Jabari at 7, from July 21: 2022 NBA mock draft: An early look at all 59 (yes, 59) picks

The consensus between CBS, ESPN, USAToday, SI was that Jabari wasn't a top 3 pick. He entered the conversation once the season began. By February he was the popular pick to go #1.

I know y'all love to hate Pearl, but he did in fact improve his draft stock. It's not even really debatable.
