'22 SC SF Julian Phillips (Tennessee commit)

Whether you want to credit Pearl or not is irrelevant. Jabari Smith's stock improved this season to the point he was considered to be the top overall prospect. As stated above, this class was viewed as a top 2 of Paolo and Chet with a drop to 3. Now a lot of pundits are saying the best pick to have in this draft is 3 because you will get one of Paolo, Chet, or Jabari and won't have to deal with any scrutiny by choosing one over the other.

As far as Philips is concerned, Pearl can sell another top 6 NBA pick and walking right into the Jabari Smith role which got him drafted top 3. Barnes can sell that he coached Durant a decade ago at another school but he develops guys. What do you think sounds better to a 17 year old? Also we don't win many recruiting battles with Auburn it seems. I dont like that news at all.

Jabari Smith would have been a Top 10 Pick whether he committed to Auburn or another school.

He was underutilized under Pearl cause of his piss poor guard play who shot their selves out of the building.

Losing in the second round of the NCAA Tournament with a talent like Smith was due to his poor coaching.

You’re biased against Barnes and it shows.

Being a top 10 pick isn't the same as potentially going #1, at all.

If Jabari Smith was underutilized, then dude is the next Kevin Durant because he absolutely got his on a nightly basis.

KD also went out in the second round.

Honestly, this may have been Pearl’s worst coaching job of his career. To have 2 post talents like Smith and Kessler yet allow your guards to gun away at will was coaching malpractice IMO.
I can't disagree. And oddly enough, I've not seen any of the more vocal members of his fan club show up to rip him in the interest of fairness the same way they retroactively rip Barnes for failing to make it to the second weekend with Kevin Durant 15 years ago.

I mean, that's not true.

The consensus between CBS, ESPN, USAToday, SI was that Jabari wasn't a top 3 pick. He entered the conversation once the season began. By February he was the popular pick to go #1.

I know y'all love to hate Pearl, but he did in fact improve his draft stock. It's not even really debatable.

The Athletic's Sam Vecenie's 2022 NBA Draft Big Board 1.0 (11/9/21) : NBA_Draft (reddit.com)

This is a reddit forum with Sam Vecenie's original mock draft on 11/9/21. Vecenie is one of the best. I don't pay for The Athletic. But, there is an excerpt that says "Jabari Smith has slid up the board throughout the offseason to where he’s seen as No. 4 here. Scouts who have been down to Auburn have really been excited by what they’ve seen from him athletically and as a shooter at 6-foot-10."

Ok.....so Jabari Smith just had to make it to campus for more scouts to see him. But, this is quite clear that Jabari Smith was already a top 4 pick before he ever played his first game at Auburn.

You are correct- it's not debatable.

All of these links outside of the bleacher report were after the season started.

Even if an outlet had Jabari as a top 4 prospect prior to the season (which, i've only seen 1) nobody had him over Paolo or Chet. Most do now. Does Bruce not get credit for that?

November 9? November 13 after Jabari played Morehead State and a Louisiana directional school? November 15 right before Auburn barely beat South Florida and Jabari went 3-12?

Jabari is the type of talent that he is going to get drafted high regardless of where he plays. Same as a vast majority of Calipari's one and done players. You think Calipari "developed" John Wall, Demarcus Cousins, Anthony Davis, et. al.? No....they could have gone anywhere to show off their skills.

Plus, my original post said that Jabari was always a top 4-5 pick. It didn't say he was always better than Paulo and Chet. He is still behind Chet in a bunch of current ones.

The OP i responded to stated Jabari was always a top 3 pick and going to Auburn didn't help his stock, which isn't true.

And all of those guys had enormous amounts of hype coming into their frosh seasons for good reason. Jabari's wasn't anywhere near that.

Would he have been a top 5 pick regardless of where he had gone? Probably, but refusing to acknowledge Bruce's style of play has benefited his skill-set is hilarious. He more than likely wouldn't be a top 2 pick he had he came to UT.

That's BS and just pure speculation. I said he was always a top 4-5 pick. He just needed to be seen on the court. Pretty simple.

That’s easy to say in hindsight, but he was never consensus top 4-5 pick before the season started. Wasn’t even a top 5 recruit.

You’re right it probably was on Pearl for letting Jabari shoot too much in the 2nd round. Jabari took 16+ shots in a game 6 times this year; Auburn lost 5 of those. So only 1 time in 29 wins did he shoot that much. Coincidence? Correlation?

Jabari is the most talented player in the draft but I think he will struggle. I think mentally and physically his body language on the court showed he wasn't a real team player. I don't blame the kid for that. I blame his coach/leadership. He will be great pro, but I think he will be in for a rude awakening at the next level.

This is simply an outside observation from a guy with a low level coaching background haha.

Not correct. He actually was top 5 until Sharpe, Bates, and Duren all re-classified. Bates can't even go to the NBA until 2023. Sharpe never played. Duren showed well this year, but there were reports before Memphis that his camp didn't want him to get exposed in college because he didn't have much of an outside shot and just bullied down low. Duren never had the high school game that Smith had.

Unless he comes in and lights the game on fire, it looks like JP would be a 2+ year player. I’m liking him more by the minute.

I feel like this is a dumb argument. So he moved up from 7-9 pre-season to top 3? That’s not that big of a jump. Whose to say if that was because of Bruce or just because he was already underrated.
I would argue being a potential top 10 pick to be potentially number 1 is a big jump. The argument was that Bruce had nothing to do with it- which is wrong.

So scouts agreed he wasn’t a top 5 player prior to the season starting? Thanks.
