'22 SC SF Julian Phillips (Tennessee commit)

That’s the way his offense has always been though, he wasn’t use to having two great great low post players
Barnes isn’t used to not having a post scoring threat but this year’s team had more perimeter talent. Barnes was able to break from his norm and adjust but Pearl couldn’t - Who’s the better coach then?

I agree with this statement and dont think Barnes has been given enough credit for the offensive changes this year. Ive always felt like a great coach will tinker his gamelan to maximize the personnel. Barnes did a phenomenal job of that this year and really made wholesale changes to the offense and should be given a ton of credit. Its not perfect and I think there are some tweaks to be made, but I love the direction its headed.

Whether you want to credit Pearl or not is irrelevant. Jabari Smith's stock improved this season to the point he was considered to be the top overall prospect. As stated above, this class was viewed as a top 2 of Paolo and Chet with a drop to 3. Now a lot of pundits are saying the best pick to have in this draft is 3 because you will get one of Paolo, Chet, or Jabari and won't have to deal with any scrutiny by choosing one over the other.

As far as Philips is concerned, Pearl can sell another top 6 NBA pick and walking right into the Jabari Smith role which got him drafted top 3. Barnes can sell that he coached Durant a decade ago at another school but he develops guys. What do you think sounds better to a 17 year old? Also we don't win many recruiting battles with Auburn it seems. I dont like that news at all.
Barnes can sell several much more recent impressive player development successes e.g. Grant Williams

If you are a one and done kid you don't care about a 3 year development plan. Thats the point you and others are missing when it comes to recruiting a one and done. Grant Williams path doesn't matter to them because they don't think they will be there that long.

Thats not to say Grant Williams development wasn't impressive. It was. Thats just not the product they are looking to be sold.

If you are a one and done kid then you are good enough to go to most schools without effecting your draft status regardless of coach

Well, we may start to win more of these battles against Auburn if we can offer more in NIL than Auburn did before NIL started. As Lane Kiffin stated, these kids may talk about how much they love the coach, facilities, and fans, but it is becoming more like pro sports. It is a business decision.

This may make it less fun for people on message boards, but is simply today's reality. Lucky for us, it appears that we have top 10 (top 5?) money to give.

Jabari Smith’s stock rose to top 3 level because NBA scouts got to watch him a lot more in college and see his obvious talent. Give Pearl credit for recruiting Jabari Smith but this idea that Pearl improved his draft stock is laughable. Jabari Smith would have been a top 3 pick no matter where he played in college.

Officially able to sign Phillips

I'm not sure that matters. I've been trying to find out if Bailey would not have counted against the 13-scholarship limit next season for the same reason Fulkerson did not count this past season. It might be that all of the 2020-21 players do not count during their fifth year - or perhaps the hard limit of 13 returns next season - or perhaps the NCAA gradually reduces the maximum number of free fifth-year players you can have, over the first few seasons after 2020-21. I haven't found an answer to this.

I was corrected on here several weeks ago. Raising the 13 limit was a one year rule. Bailey leaving frees up a spot.

It matters. He officially frees up a spot. Hopefully Phillips will take it

Thanks for clearing that up.
Bailey leaving leaves us at 13, including Edwards. Someone else would still need to leave for a spot to open up. I figure we expect Chandler to leave, but that's not official yet.

Basically we’re full. Spots for new players will be one-for-one now with Chandler anticipated to create a spot. Best scenario is that Chandler returns and remains as the 13th.

Several VN posters are also running off Powell for another spot. Many are drive-by posters with **** for brains.

Powell would then have to sit out a year because he used his free transfer to get here. I'll just hope he takes a step forward over the offseason.

Yes, but as I just learned in the last week, he still has a redshirt year available. He has 4 years to play 3. He wouldn’t lose a year by transferring. He’d sit out as a redshirt and then have 3 years left. He can even redshirt at TN and still have 3 years left after sitting out one.

The COVID rule that gave everybody 2020-21 back and raised the roster limit above 13 for 2021-22 also extended the 5 year clock for everybody to 6 years.

That's a good point, but he'd still have to sit. It's not as if he can follow Schwartz to ECU and be on the floor for big minutes next year. I don't know how close he has gotten to a degree in two years at two schools. If he can graduate after his third year, he could stay here for next season and then have better options if he wants to leave.

Just noticed he has two CB’s to Auburn. So Auburn is in on both of them?
They’re for sure getting Traore and they’re pushing hard for Phillips too. They’ve still got 4-5 spots left to fill this offseason, outside of who they’ve already signed.
