3 Keys to this Season

I've thought so too, at least against most teams.

If Barton/the guards have a good success rate of getting the ball in the post, I won't care what his/their assist total is. That was the biggest problem last year when games were going poorly.

I am no expert but from what I see and my buddies who are smarter basketball guys say the same, we are getting looks.

I've always thought that people were too hard on Martin offensively. He preaches D but his offense has looked bad at times because we never had a point and were lacking talent and depth and never had a consistent 3 point shooter.

I disagree. Offensive spacing often sucked, which is another reason why last year was a failure. I give a little pass because when you are playing Trae and Hall together, effort plays, smart plays, defensive plays and flat out wins are limited.
I don't think we got open looks from an inside out game last year and we didn't get them from penetration and kicks either. If we did get some, its because CM was forced to call a play as there was no leader to play ball and direct traffic.
We finally started doing more pick and roll when we went on a run and it opened up a little, but he reverted back to early season tightness late when it counted, and again, had an unreliable head case trying to lead his team with really no other pg option.

I really don't care how many assists Barton or Thompson has as long as the ball is moving and guys are getting open shots. Open shots haven't occurred in our offense much due to:

-lack of ballhandling by pg and wings
-lack of penetration due to above. How many times did we have a pg penetrate, draw and kick? When Mcrae went off, seems to me he was pulling up in people faces and didn't give a fawk, which is a player I love.
-no inside/out game with Kenny the mummy Hall on the block and walking his man right over to Stokes for an easy double team
-standing around watching Trae dribble, then call a play where we force a pass to the wing to set up a play with 15 seconds left because no leader on the floor knew wtf to do and how to just play.
-no transition game. The trailer 3 while pushing the pace should be a staple with a team with a good pg. It's usually open and in rhythm so it's easier for streaky shooters to knock them down in rhythm.
-passing. We have had to be one of the worst passing teams around. Perimeter and interior. Wing passing to the block has been horrid and not many passes have hit players on the right spot to help them finish. Barton, Thompson, Hubbs, and especially Maymon, are all upgrades on passing ability, even if you only want to include basic passing, much less creative passing that allows 6'7 guys with the wingspan of an albatross to go up and finish.

Barton brings a lot to our team but only had 1.1 and 1.6 assists the past two yrs.....I'm not sure how we assume he will bring improved passing to our team.

I'm gonna go out on a limb and say those numbers more than double this year.

They should with him getting starters minutes here but they will have to improve quite a bit to be considered a "good" passer....he should give us a good 3 pt shooter, quickness and defense which we need but. I don't feel he is an upgrade as a passer.

As compared to Golden, I disagree.

We'll see. He should be playing 30 minutes a game, but if he stays at 1 assist, Thompson will play. I have seen him play and he's a better passer than Trae, who got many assists for tossing it to McRae and watching him hit a 25 footer in somebody's face.

I agree. Being a good passer and getting assists aren't necessarily related. Good passers can feed the post and on the break all day, but if their teammates don't finish, there is no assist to be had. Conversely, you can rack up 5-6 assists a game by virtue of being the PG and passing to McRae on the wing (not a difficult or skilled play), and have him draining from outside.

I think this is correct.

He was playing 15 or so minutes a game putting up those numbers, so I think it's safe to say that they'll double if his minutes double.
Plus Barton's role at Memphis wasn't to pass/get assists, his role was being the sniper who broke zones.

Well, last season his role was to spell Joe Jackson at the PG position. Distributing the ball came with the territory, but we usually also had Crawford or Geron on the court to shoulder some of the load too.

We have a very close team.

As an incoming Freshman, looks like Davis is fitting in quite nicely with the upper classmen.

I think Barton is a huge get and possible upgrade but it seems like alot of this is like the backup QB syndrome. I dont think Golden was nearly as bad as he is portrayed on here nor Barton nearly as good.

Not always the way it works, but yea. I think he'll be averaging 4+ APG which would be more than double his previous average.

If you asked me who was the better player I would say golden. That doesn't necessarily mean he's the best fit for us though. I think Barton is a perfect fit for this team, and will make us a better team than golden would've.

As a PG, Golden is every bit as bad as portrayed. As a basketball player, he wasn't that bad, but he just wasn't a PG.

Right on Chris.

Golden is the guy at the park that gets picked up to be the offense. Barton is the guy picked to run the offense.

The key to TN elevating itself is the ability to find ways to win the games that are toss-ups or decided in the last 10 minutes. Maybe a rewrite would be to "not lose the games that are decided in the last 10 minutes."

SEC teams, including TN, don't seem to have that added ingredient that is so apparent in SEC football.
