8 Team Playoffs

True. But again, even that unsplit sum is less than what every SEC and Big 10 member gets.

The Big XII is still on life support. Their rights package ends around 2025, and I can't imagine that either ESPN or Fox will want to re-up at the current rates. And the money pit that is the Longhorn Network has next to no chance of surviving that round of negotiations. Keep in mind that it would benefit the networks if OU and Texas go somewhere else, and the Big XII contracts simply disappear.
good points.

UCF would get obliterated like 60-3 against Bama. They would sound a peep ever again....

You know you say that, but every year Bama embarrasses us and 6 months later tons of fans are on here posting about how we’re gonna whoop them this year.

Bama beat us by 37. They only threw 6 passes in the 2nd half. They pulled their starters with 12 minutes to go in the 3rd. They could have scored 80 on us. But come back here in August and there will he posts about how this is the year we beat Bama.

Nice, good for them. Would love to see how they would compete in the CFP given they beat the "better team"

I think the question would be (yes, I'm stuck on the G5 thing) if an 8-4 P5 team could take down a UCF from this year or Houston in 2015 in a playoff situation?

I think the four loss teams as a conference champion are the anomaly.

Im sure they could but imo every fbs team should be able to win an nc. Even with the 4 team format, most of the semi final games are blow outs. I would like to take all this guess work out and make simple criteria. Win your conference and you are in. Then at at large for group of 5. Most times that one would be a pretty simple pick.

Kinda like I described back in post 46?

I like 8 until the ncaa somehow goes to a 4 conference structure which aint happening. With 8, all big 5 conference winners are in with 3 at large bids. Jmo

Kind of, but I prefer a 6 team playoff. 5 conference champs and one at large from the group of 5.
Take last year for instance, no way alabama should have been in after not playing in their conference champ game.

I'd prefer eight myself as I described with no bye rounds for the #1 and 2 seeds. Two "at large" positions which takes care of the Independent element and folks like Bama, UGA, OSU, etc that are championship caliber, but only had one loss.

The strongest will eventually prevail.

I understand the competition side of that debate. I dont like the logistic side. Asking those fan bases to travel 3 straight weeks, taking 2 more top teams out of top tier bowls, asking the Student Athletes to go another week, taking the enjoyable bowl experience out for them.etc.

My opinion is exactly what it was before they started the 4 team playoff. They need to address the real issue which is strength of schedule. Strength of schedule needs to carry much more weight in the formula for determining who should play for major bowls. To many teams are playing gravy schedules and then crying about the lack of recognition. Making it harder for an SEC team to play the rigorous sec schedule then have to play a fresh opponents in the playoffs with no or few quality wins doesnt help determine who the best is...it just hurts the sec teams chances who deserve it more.

You can’t just wave the SEC flag and say ours is the hardest conference. 5 teams didn’t have to play Bama in the regular season which makes their SEC schedule a lot easier than ours. 8 SEC teams were ranked in the final CFP ranking. MSU played 6 of those teams. Bama had the easiest schedule only playing 4 ranked teams, none of them in the top 10. UT played 5 of them and had the hardest SEC schedule.

Just for giggles, last year's breakdown under my proposal would have looked like this:

ACC: Clemson (#1)
Big 10: Ohio State (#5)
Big 12: Oklahoma (#2)
Pac-12: USC (#8)
SEC: Georgia (#3)
G5: UCF (#12)
At large 1: Alabama (#4)
At large 2: Wisconsin (#6)

Matchings:

Clemson vs UCF
OU vs USC
UGA vs Wisconsin
Bama vs OSU

Sounds like a good scenerio, with the exception of Alabama. They finished 3rd in the sec. Cant won their division or conference.

Plus I just hate alabama

They don't have to face Alabama either. That automatically makes it easier

Give me 8 teams

ACC conference Winner
SEC Conference Winner
Big 10 Conference winner
Big 12 Conference Winner
PAC 12 Conference Winner
At Large
At Large
At Large

Top Two records get a bye

IF we are going to stick with a system determined by voting and dogmatism (conference champs get in, even a 4 loss Northwestern team??), let's at least minimize the dogmatism and not guatantee a g5 spot. Many years the best g5 is 10th, 15th, 20th. Why guarantee any spot?

Which brings me back to...giving them their own ring. Top 8 P5s makes fine sense. Still, why have conference championships, THEN determine 8 teams? Might as well be more efficient and build the conference championship games into the overall system. Stop the "default play-in games" and literally make them play-in games.

Top G5 teams have beaten these schools in bowl games when they were ranked in the top 10: Auburn, FSU, Wisconsin, Oklahoma, Baylor, Alabama.

Think about this for a second. A G5 team has beaten Alabama more recently than we have.

Sure they did and they proved it! Getting into your conf championship is a bit arbitrary. They were a 1 loss team in the best division in all of cfb, while TWO loss Auburn gets to play in...arbitrary and bs. Then a 4 loss b1g team gets a shot. Arbitrary! That would be a bad, bad system for SEC teams. Great for B1g West and ACC coastal scrubs.

Not really fair that the first 2 get a bye.... Extra week to heal their bodies....

I know I know... Well finish first or second....

No one can honestly say that ND is better than Clemson.... So why should Clemson get the bye..

Just my thoughts.

Completely agree, it just adds waay more debate over top 2 and puts more power in hands of voters. Voters should be done away with altogether.

That's great. Let em go undefeated and make their way in. If they are top 10, they have a good shot of getting in.
