a serious candidate list

Hart may try to renegotiate the deal. Add a year, give a small raise but lower the buyout.

You almost have to fire him or extend him at this point. It will be a killer in recruiting.

Renegotiating his contract just to lower the buyout basically has the same effects / impression as not giving him an extension, IMO. Either have to give him a raise with extension or cut ties with the program after year 3. The way I see it is do or die this year, Hart really doesn't have a choice unless he just lets the basketball program to continue to decline until CCM completely runs out.

If we're going to consider Quin Snyder, why not first reach out to Jerry Tarkanian, Clem Haskins, Dave Bliss, and The Devil.

I think Snyder would be an interesting choice because he did well at Missouri and has coached in Russia and is currently an assistant coach with the Atlanta Hawks. Plus he is a Coach K protege as is Amaker and the guy at Northwestern.

Barnes's wife is from Tennessee and he might consider the job if Texas feels like they need to go in a different direction.

Green is an ex Vol and I think he would be an intriguing name because he could recruit all over the state.

Having said all this, if Hart was to fire Martin, how high is UT willing to go on the salary scale? Would they go 2.5 to 3 million a year like they did for CBJ?

If I was DH, i would ask people like Ernie Grunfeld and Allan Houston for some people who could market the program nationwide and coach.

These next couple of months will be very interesting.

I remember Jamie Dixon's name being tossed around before we hired Martin. Seems like he's fallen off the radar since?

I don't think it will happen but what I suggested was negotiate down the buyout to a lower percentage, but give him an extension so that it can't be used against him in recruiting. So he makes 1.35 currently and has this year and two more years on his deal. If, at the end of the year, you don't fire him but aren't sure he's the guy, you negotiate his buyout to a lower percentage (say 40%), add a year to his deal. Now Cuonzo isn't going to agree to this unless you give him at least a small raise otherwise he's just agreeing to losing money.

Barring a miraculous close to the season, CCM isn't going to instill confidence that he's the answer. On the flip side, Hart probably doesn't want to go on another search and pay another buyout. Letting Cuonzo coach another year without extending him would be a huge challenge in recruiting with the 2015 class and beyond and would have lasting impacts on our program.

Like you said, we've kinda come to a crossroad. I just have a hard time seeing Hart pull the trigger on another buyout. But he has to make a choice.
A. Fire CCM
B. Extend CCM
C. Don't extend him or fire him.

Personally I think it will be C, or something like the scenario I described. But I think B and C could be much more costly long term than A.

He was on my short list before I read this:

The findings of an NCAA investigation into the program were released in March, and Saint Mary's was hit with four years of probation for "a failure to monitor and a failure to promote an atmosphere for compliance" in its men's basketball program.
NCAA upholds penalties against Saint Mary's, Randy Bennett - San Jose Mercury News
Well another one bites the dust. He has a good thing going at Mary's I guess. Shame that happened. I always thought he was one of the cleaner coaches out there.

I laughed when that happend. Why on earth would someone trade steak in for a bologne sandwhich. Not saying Tennessee is a bad job, it would have been ridiculous for someone to come from a school like Pitt with NCAA sanctions looming. A Martin type of here was a best case scenario.

He might listen this time though. Pittsburgh isn't exactly a hot bed for college basketball interest. He's built a good program, but Pittsburgh cares about one thing, the Steelers.

Lawarance Frank will probably take over for Kidd once their Owner/GM realizes they screws up hiring Kidd. Marshall has already been passed over 3 times by us he'd probably laugh at an offer. Byrd is questionable recruiting? If you are going to get Floyd you might as well get Bruce back.

Marshall was passed over three times by an AD that is no longer here.

I think people can make the same argument about UT, although the football program has been way down recently.

I don't know about that. They have sold out 12 consecutive seasons (205 consecutive home games dating back to '02), moved to the ACC (which doesn't require you to sell as many visiting tickets as the BE did). Not to mention, the Zoo Crew is up there with the Duke faithful and just as rowdy and make it a tough place to play as any other student section. Plus, the Pete is a beautiful arena. I think it would be more of a step backwards. Pitt would counter any offer and I don't see Dixon leaving unless it's a big time school.

Marshall could reach mid level rock star status like Mark Few has. This guy has it made there. No reason to go somewhere else.

He has a caravan of boosters/friends that pretty much roll with the team wherever they go and can get all the talent he wants by scouring the gyms in Kansas in the winter. Plus he's a multimillionaire along with not having to pay for a thing.
