Active Shooter at High School in Parkland, FL

I never thought it should be mandatory but some would welcome the challenge. Pay the ones that want to some extra money. Mandatory training every year. It's not like it would take extra time away from the classroom. Chances are the skills would never be needed.

Pay me extra because I took a non-verbal kid and made him a reader.
Pay me extra because I’ve taught a little girls who’s had a worse life than any of us can imagine and instead of yelling and screaming and running out of the room and hiding in any nook and cranny she can find in the school now can manage her biggest emotions
Pay me extra because when I got my kids this year they literally had no idea how to hold a pencil to shape letters or numbers and can now add and subtract.
Pay me extra to offset the $1500+ I spend a year in my classrooms so my students can have glue and paint and snacks.

Don’t “pay me extra” to carry a gun to prevent something that is statistically unlikely to happen. Pay someone else to do that.

Pay me extra to say thanks for doing what I already do.

I'm not debating if you're paid well enough. Obviously you don't have the confidence or the Will to carry a gun. I don't want you to carry a gun. Some might have the confidence and the will to carry a gun. If they do and want sone extra pay for the training that will be required, do so. Or on the other hand we can hire full time security and take more money from the budget that we could be paying teachers.

Nobody is going to force you to carry a gun but if you wanted to you should be able to. You shouldn’t be forced to give up your right to self defense at the school door.

No were not. Quite the opposite.

You are younger. Back in the day there were several teachers I didn't want to cross. Out of curiosity, I asked my 18 yo who's a senior in high school if he had any teachers that he felt would be comfortable carrying in class. He said there were at least three or four. One being a woman. He said one day this woman teacher was late to class and she explained she'd forgot her handgun was in her ford f250 and she had to return home to leave it there so as not to get into trouble. While there may not be many there are some.

I'm not painting with a broad brush at all. I'm simply stating there are some that could responsibly carry and be counted on in case of a catastrophe. You're stating there are none.

Not. Worth. It.

Thank you. We are already understaffed with para-professionals, special education teachers, behaviorists, counselors, psychiatrists and social workers and day to day have to pick up the slack. I have no desire to become a security guard as well.

exactly....

I say put cop's in school, one for each building and depending on the size of the building....2 or 3

They also need security camera's in the hallways and strategic points, that can be accessed, while other officers are in route, so the shooter can be located...

I was married to a school professional for 17 years that worked in 4 states, in elementary, middle, junior high and HS, and dated another one for the last 3 years...So I've met and interacted with 100's of teachers, counselors, and administrators and there's not more than a handful, that I would say is qualified to carry a gun in a school..

And given the fact that teachers are so underpaid, that if you offer a stipend and training to be "one of the armed teachers", your going to open pandoras box of the wack job teachers carrying guns...

I agree with that. And you run a greater risk of students accessing the weapon if it’s on a teacher.

Yeah, put cops in schools. Who is going to pay for that? There was an armed security guard and even first responding police officers who didn't enter the building. The best option is to arm teachers who are already in the building who want to/already carry or who own or are very familiar with firearms. Nobody is saying to arm unwilling teachers or all teachers.

I agree with that. And you run a greater risk of students accessing the weapon if it’s on a teacher.

It's conceal carry which means it's hidden. Students should not know which teachers are carrying for the school.

Need to switch to online education system. Brick and mortar schools are an anachronism that only survive as a form of publicly funded day care for working parents. That is the solution.

I like newt. I'm surprised he's this close minded.

Because i feel i have a better solution and arming teachers sets a dangerous precedent i feel strongly about. I respect your opinion however. Its pretty crappy that it has even come to this. People suck.

I agree people suck and it's a shame that it's come to this. Our society is changing for the worse. I think someone else said that going to a classroom for is probably going to be a thing of the past before long. Sad thing is the social aspect of not being in a classroom setting and learning how to interact with people will go away too. I probably won't be around to see it and I cant say I'm disappointed.

Next time I want to use a picture of a teacher in a classroom, I'll just use this one:

Insubordinate and churlish, A-aron.

The biggest player in all of this is the lack of access to and/or use of mental health services.

We put the responsibility of treating mental illnesses back on the person who is suffering from it and want to do it thru medication then act shocked when they stop care and snap.

Have you been around kids lately? Socialization is done with emoji via texting. If you do get them talking they'll just regurgitate garbage they read in someone else's tweets because they are scared that an original thought might get them branded as some sort of hater. They way I look at it, there is no federal constitutional right to an education, which means that if we really are a nation of laws we will close the schools way before we start talking gun bans. Sadly, most people only support the constitution insofar as it suits their own agenda.

Did he seek mental health services?
