They may be expecting good BBQ since they're traveling to the "South." But Knoxville is not a good BBQ town (not a good food town in general). If they want BBQ, tell them to avoid Calhoun's (because it's awful) and the only decent choices are Dead End and Sweet P's.

Best tavern is Suttree's.

They'll enjoy walking around downtown.

pretty much this. If they want great food have them eat in Nashville before they head to Knoxville and before they fly out :)

Since you guys are flying to Nashville, I'd definitely take the night and stay around there before traveling to Knoxville.

Nashville is a great city, has a great night-life, and you won't have to drive 3 hours after landing.

Where does this Smokey Mountain thing come from? Besides, they're coming from Utah where there's a wall of pretty good size mountains on the East side.

Heck, Our mountains stay Smoky not "Smokey Bear" BECAUSE we get our corn from a jar. I thought everybody knew that :dance2:

good grief, you people act like magnolia ave is dangerous…

have y'all ever been to any other cities?

I was thinking the same thing, Knoxville has the safest "bad" area in the country. I laugh when I hear people around here talk about it like it a NYC ghetto. Believe me, grew up in one. Magnolia doesn't come close.

You can't go wrong with Market Square. Downtown Knoxville is beautiful and pretty much the only good eats are there. The rest of Knoxville is a psychological hellscape of chain restaurants and unchecked sprawl.

Hi everyone,

I'm sure this (or similar) has been posted 1000x before, but I got a FB message from couple of friends from here in Utah and they are flying to TN for the Utah State games. They hit me up for some local advice on things to do/see/EAT while they are in town. Since it's been close to 20 years since I lived in Knoxville, I wasn't much help. So if any of you are feeling generous and would mind handing out a few tips, that would be awesome!

Thanks in advance. :peace2:

Lonnie

Edit: as for logistics, they are flying into Nashville and driving to Knoxville. So anything along I-40 is fair game.

suggestion? rockwood, tn. holy ****! it's all there.

If it were me I would definitely come in and see Boomsday on Saturday night. Then they can see the game the next day. If they want to get a taste of Nashville Monday would be the day for that. Boomsday is a once a year thing whereas all of the other attractions will still be there.

I think that is a nice balance. You don't want to take a vacation only to spend all of your time driving and it can get crowded going to the national park or anywhere east of Knoxville.
