Advice for (UT) Aggies coming to Knoxville...

Best advice is to fly into Nashville and stay the entire weekend. Much more fun than Knoxville. Watch the game on TV at one of the gazillion bars here in town and avoid the crowd of obnoxious drunks.

I agree that Nashville is more fun...sometimes, but without Neyland stadium on game day, the Vol Walk, the tailgating, etc watching the game in Nashville would not come close.

Bring a whole bunch of crying towels and a bottle of valium. They'll help you with your depression on the flight back home. :cool2:

Haven't read through the thread yet but one big thing: don't be shy at all! As people have said, don't miss Boomsday you will love it. Tell people you came all the way from Utah, we love guests and Boomsday plus gameday is a time where folks are gonna be out and about.

On gameday pay a visit the Vol Navy - it's grown and if you're lucky you might get invited aboard to share some food. Check out the pregame ceremonies too, we put on a show. Although Knoxville has grown immensely in 20 years, the small town attitude hasn't changed at all. People will do their best to show you a good time and many will be curious about Utah. It's not a place we know much about.

Avoid any belligerent drunks and be polite and I guarantee you that you'll have a blast. Hospitality is something we're very good at but I warn you if you're not used to strangers treating you like they've known you forever it may take you aback. Realize that's normal for us.

I hope you have a fantastic time. :hi:

I don't mean to hijack this thread, but I am flying to Jacksonville in October to visit my brothers family, then my brother and I are driving to Knoxville to see my first vol game at Neyland vs Flordia. Are there any stops we need to make to eat on the drive in from Jacksonville? Also, is it better to drive through Atlanta or through Columbia?

Probably Columbia as long as you don't mind being that close to Spurrier...

Hi everyone,

I'm sure this (or similar) has been posted 1000x before, but I got a FB message from couple of friends from here in Utah and they are flying to TN for the Utah State games. They hit me up for some local advice on things to do/see/EAT while they are in town. Since it's been close to 20 years since I lived in Knoxville, I wasn't much help. So if any of you are feeling generous and would mind handing out a few tips, that would be awesome!

Thanks in advance. :peace2:

Edit: as for logistics, they are flying into Nashville and driving to Knoxville. So anything along I-40 is fair game.

If they are flying into Nashville and are over the age of 25 they should probably stay there a night or two instead of spending it in Knoxville.

Edit: reason for the age thing is that Knoxville night life is geared towards college students

If they are flying in to Nashville( Friday night) , I recommend they head downtown for one night. They'll find food and fun anywhere in that area. Saturday on the way to Knoxville stop at either Cummins Falls or Fall Creek Falls. Both are pretty close to I40.

Get to Knoxville for Boomsday. Hit up The Old City that evening and go with the flow from then on out.

They may be expecting good BBQ since they're traveling to the "South." But Knoxville is not a good BBQ town (not a good food town in general). If they want BBQ, tell them to avoid Calhoun's (because it's awful) and the only decent choices are Dead End and Sweet P's.

Best tavern is Suttree's.

They'll enjoy walking around downtown.

Best BBQ in the state is rite in downtown Nashville peg leg porkers. If your flying into BNA your less then 10 min away.

Definitely go through Columbia. Columbia traffic can stink, but not nearly as much as Atlanta traffic can. If you go through Columbia you'll also go through the mountains, which is nice (especially if you take your time).

Bump food. You're headed to the TN/FL game. Grab some Zaxby's and keep on truckin'.

Calhoun's would finish last place in any legitimate BBQ competition. It's a tourist trap. Locals who like it either have no taste or (perhaps more likely) remember the good ole days and continue to believe it's great as they are predicting another 10 win season.

This. Calhoun's pulled pork tastes like it came out of a tub at Kroger's.

Them to bring all their sisters / wives...we understand in Utah that group is one in the same

Alta, looked a little different in March (actually, the backdrop is Snowbird, but I was standing in Alta). I want to go back!

I taught (part time) at Alta for close to 10 years. I holds a very special place in my heart.
