Air fresheners are illegal in Minnesota

The social issues need to be addressed at the same time. I don't hear enough cops out here making the case that we have far too many ineffective laws and far too many social issues that make their jobs worse. They have the protection of the union and still don't use that protection for good use. If these lawmakers come out with bogus laws that violate the people's rights, you cops don't say a word. But let some rogue cop shoot a civilian and all cops are on deck to defend the cops. its like you all create the "us" vs "them" environment. You all don't seem to ever stand with the people and against the lawmakers.

I never had the protection of a union. I hate a lot of the laws on the books, so I didn't enforce them. I think society has created the "us" vs "them", I agree it is easy to sink into your comfort zone. When all you hear daily is how awful you and all your co-workers are it is easy to lean into the other people dealing with the same ****. Then again, I stepped away for numerous reasons, some of which you mentioned. I just hate the slander I constantly see. I've met so many great people, who do a great job. They get ruthlessly beaten down for stuff they've never even witnessed, let alone done themselves. It's prejudice, but somehow it is justified in the eyes of society. Also, I'm not defending this situation at all, but it is being portrayed by media as something it is not.

To an ignorant comment. You downplay the cops need for weapons based on a low percentage and want to disarm the law abiding citizens based on a low percentage. You’re pandering to the criminals in both cases but that’s expected.

the majority of police interactions are not with criminals though. Which is why I said they dont need guns for most, not all, of what they do. not everything.

They respond to accidents, they inform the public on matters to keep peace, they investigate, etc. they dont need guns for that

idk its just a thought. I think what we are doing right now is really stupid. just waiting for the next police shooting and rioting every time. Just thought there could be another way, oh well. status quo it is

Which cops don’t need guns? Be specific.

there may be a way to separate traffic policing from other forms of policing.

however, it's a trade off of missed arrests of people who should be arrested (drug trafficking, violent offenders with warrants, etc.) vs violence between suspect and officers.

I also think all officers should be required to have a bachelor's degree, FYI. Another proposal of mine.

We make sure all our other figures of authority: judges, teachers, detectives, paramedics, etc are all educated but somehow the guy/girls with the guns dont have to be. its crazy IMO

How? I don’t have the numbers but I’d say traffic stops take up a big chunk of police involved shootings and justifiably so.

Completely asinine. They go through training and continue to train throughout their career. Getting a piece of paper won’t change anything.

That's ludicrous. Have you been to WV? They have thicker accents and more incest than TN ever has.

I wa born there and lived there until I was in second grade and we moved to Columbus, Oh.

Geography and historical data disagree with you.

You are confusing Appalachian dialect and thinking with southern by the way.

Not the same thing.

Billy the kid and Jesse James are you sure? Billy literally would have been a kid during Jesse James’s days. Also pretty sure the Kid was never in Missouri for any duration of time but maybe I’m wrong

He wasnt.

Jesse went and found him and asked him to come join him. He declined.

I was shocked too when I learned it.

Happened July 26, 1879 at the old Adobe hotel near Las Vegas.

I have a bachelor's degree in Criminal Justice. It helped me exactly zero times in my career. Also, good luck. You need to greatly increase the pay if that is a requirement. No one is going 30-40K in debt is going to become a cop, except my dumbass.

Since we are entertaining your idea of taking guns away.....would this have been an encounter were a Tasercop should have been sent instead?

What other options can you see out there to prevent this from happening again, short of taking the responding firearms away?

Statistically, there are very few unjust shootings per year. Our world thrives on drama though.

I'm saying if traffic stops were just traffic stops maybe this wouldn't be the case. Give the ticket and move on - don't try to apprehend. Like I said it's a trade off

I'm not saying traffic cops can't have guns - just that if a traffic stop ended at citations most of these incidents would not occur.

Traffic stops are their excuse to poke around more. They shouldn't be.

All cops should have body cams and dash cams always on. They should have to prove why they pulled you over is legitimate also more than just the cop's word.

They pulled him over for expired registration tags (allegedly), yeah, id say that's a taser only job but I'd be happy to yield to the experts if this idea ever was instituted

Why even send a cop? Why not a mental health professional or a motivational speaker?
