The social issues need to be addressed at the same time. I don't hear enough cops out here making the case that we have far too many ineffective laws and far too many social issues that make their jobs worse. They have the protection of the union and still don't use that protection for good use. If these lawmakers come out with bogus laws that violate the people's rights, you cops don't say a word. But let some rogue cop shoot a civilian and all cops are on deck to defend the cops. its like you all create the "us" vs "them" environment. You all don't seem to ever stand with the people and against the lawmakers.
I never had the protection of a union. I hate a lot of the laws on the books, so I didn't enforce them. I think society has created the "us" vs "them", I agree it is easy to sink into your comfort zone. When all you hear daily is how awful you and all your co-workers are it is easy to lean into the other people dealing with the same ****. Then again, I stepped away for numerous reasons, some of which you mentioned. I just hate the slander I constantly see. I've met so many great people, who do a great job. They get ruthlessly beaten down for stuff they've never even witnessed, let alone done themselves. It's prejudice, but somehow it is justified in the eyes of society. Also, I'm not defending this situation at all, but it is being portrayed by media as something it is not.
