Albany DE Jared Verse (transfer - FSU commit)

Nearly 40 years back I was at Carson Newman. 2 of my roommates were the starting middle line backers. Both we’re benching over 400 and the weight room had the top lifts posted and there were 3 linemen over 500. This was podunk NAIA at the time. Don’t think it’s a reach to imagine some elite D1 lb’s are now doing 500 as guys have clearly gotten bigger and stronger in the past 40 years.
High school buddy of mine was there in the early 80s. He was the only white feller in the RB room that had Van Williams and Boyce Green.. He was there a couple of years and just got burned out from playing ball his whole life up to that point.

Given that I'm older, no 6-pack for me anymore but flat stomach pre covid. That's beside the point though. It's about Banks development.
Most people that have a clue about athletic performance put more stock in squat, deadlift, Olympic lifts, as well as explosive plyometric exercises. So I don't know why you're stuck on bench press.

Yeah I saw that and I hope it’s right. I just don’t have a good feeling about this one for some reason.
None of us had a good feeling about Tyre West and RG prevailed in that one. I do know that Verse has stayed in constant communication with RG, so that bodes well for the good guys IMO.

How could I be watching myself and your mom getting hot and heavy through the window? I know I'm pretty amazing, but there's only one of me.

I think she got tired of me asking her to role play Betty White.
Work had a Presentation on Penetration, in market today. Was hard to believe your Mom was completely left out of the convo. ... She's usually the first one mentioned.

Do you really want to get into this debate?

Football requires both strength and agility exercises, upper and lower body. You can't have a weak upper body and just a strong lower body. It's about balance. Strength, explosion, read, reaction, drills, etc. You are the one focusing on bench. I said Banks needs to get stronger and mentioned upper body for example. LB's have to be masters at disengaging the block - forearm shiver, controlling the blocker, ripping, tossing them. Repeated fumbling is a sign of a person that may bad fundamentals but also possible lack of upper body strength. We were steadily pushed around against the better teams hence why we couldn't get off the field and the other team running record numbers of plays. In order to take the next step in his development then he needs to continue pressing hard in the S&C program.

I was an athletic trainer at Carson-Newman from 1975-1979 and I was a couple of years away from the Ken Sparks era, though I did know Coach Sparks from his time at C-N as the Track and CC coach. Yes, C-N was a lower level than Division 1, but I would hardly classify them as podunk. They were an elite program in NAIA and NCAA Division II football under Coach Sparks. And for the person who asked about Tank Black, we entered C-N the same year and graduated the same year. Helluva receiver.

I wasn't saying to neglect upper body exercises. The bench has its place but it's a weak barometer overall for an athlete. I am saying that leg strength and explosiveness is more important than an impressive bench especially for a linebacker. There's a reason RB and Linebacker are primarily built through their legs and ass. Yes, they need to be strong all around. I actually went to college, played a damn sport and majored in sports performance so if you do want to have this discussion I'm happy to. Every athlete in the world is built from the ground up through the core. Not the chest down. I was just finding it funny you chose bench press which is not the greatest athletic enhancing exercise. That's 1970 bro science bs. Standing Push Press is a more dynamic and overall better muscle building exercise. Another fun fact, the muscles in the gluteous group and legs are the largest in the body, so by stimulating them through it's in fact easier to gain weight and add mass.
Edit: if I did bench it would be geared more with the dumbell due to incorporating the stabilizer muscle groups more so than a barbell allows as well as preventing any muscular imbalances to occur. Also at a slight incline to simulate pad level and torso angle when striking especially for lineman, if I was going for explosiveness I would use the bench but accommodating resistance ie bands or chains.

Good stuff. I played Will in college. 1st team all state in high school when there were just 3 classes.

Wrestled in high school and was a Catcher at MTSU. Loved baseball but my heart has always been geared towards football... glad I got the degree though since I ended up going Army. Makes PT wayyy more enjoyable instead of just endlessly pounding pavement.

Truth.. When my friend went there it was Sparks first year (1980). They were on their way to becoming an ELITE lower division program..

I was reading this and thinking of adding a reply commenting on the benefit of adding resistance bands...until the last sentence.

Good post.
