Why are so many people refusing to see the fact that we just significantly upgraded the head coaching position? No, it wasn't a rock star hire, or even a huge name. But from all accounts, and according to his record, the man can coach.
Some of the biggest knocks I've heard on him include the fact that he just took over programs that Kelly built. Well....so what? He was able to keep the success going, and that's the most important thing. 90 percent of the time, bad football coaches are NOT able to do that. Look at the guy who took over for Tom Osborne. Another knock on him has been his recruiting....and again....do people not understand the difference between Central Michigan and Cincinnati compared to UT? Here, he has the resources to assemble a staff with better recruiters and will also have much better facilities, tradition, and support.
I'm not saying this is a home run hire, because that remains to be seen, but all I know is we brought in a guy who is 50-27 all time as a head coach, has a 32-12 record in conference play, and led his teams to at least a share of a conference title in 4 out of his 6 years as a head coach.
I'd say those credentials are a pretty damn steep improvement over the last guy we had roaming our sidelines.
