Another bad apple (George Floyd case)

I'm all for leaving doors open due to the possibility of incomplete information, but I'm having a hard time seeing that sliver when the crew were basically pleading the police to tell them where to go.
They were told to leave. There is nowhere else to “go” during a riot. You leave completely

You may wanna check that pesky 1st Amendment.

This is one of the huge problems with law enforcement. They believe that they can violate the rights of citizens. They swear to uphold the constitution but then become thugs for the government.
In a riot situation the police have the authority to clear the entire area. This has nothing to do with 1st amendment

Then, why aren't they sitting in jail right now?

Media reports from riots, warzones etc all the time. Maybe these guys were out of line and we just didn't see it. But come on . . . at least be smart enough to not arrest them live on the air lol. Heads should roll just for being so stupid.

So they should have broke through the police lines or buildings they were surrounded by?

Doesn’t even matter. They were trying to comply...and provide ID as to who they are and what they were doing. Ricky just doesn’t want to admit his police brethren did anything wrong here, even though everyone else up through the governor fully admits it should have never happened.

Once arrested, there is a clock that starts regarding court (see 6th amendment). I'm pretty sure they are investigating this to have a solid as possible case before going to court. The officers have a right to union rep and that can complicate such matters. They need to be interviewed by theFBI/I/A/State Investigators. The Mayor firing them on the spot actually hindered this process because while employed they can be compelled to give a statement. Refusal to do so could result in discipline up to and including termination of employment. Ooops, too late, now. One could only hope that their version of events were obtained before their termination.

There's a lot of other stuff that goes into all this, the officers are known, they are not a flight risk and are unlikely to commit further offense, so it makes sense to get as much as you can, as quickly as you can before putting them into a position where you have a deadline to follow-up leads/evidence.
Good post. IMPO, we have gotten too invested in the tit for tat of arresting people immediately as some signifier of justice being served. The ultimate goal should be to do lasting justice, not to effectuate a speedy arrest and ask questions later.

There’s a safety/security exception, but that is more applicable in cases of an ongoing violence or a property crime spree rather than an isolated event. Obviously, what happened is awful, but I think there is very little threat that this man is going to walk out of his home and start murdering people again before the police have a chance to lock him up. So not really applicable here.

Too early to say this is being mishandled. The beef people have seems to be that he’s not being treated the way they perceive they would be treated, but it’s strange that they’re advocating for him to be treated in a way they they believe is wrong.

Well, it’s not strange if you look at it from the perspective of someone seeking immediate punitive retribution, but that shouldn’t be the primary objective.

I’ve been saying this all morning. If the police were in the right then the reporter crew would still be under arrest.

The defense of the police here is nauseating.

Because police depts regularly arrest people in riot situations to get them out of the area and then release them later when the objective was complete (which was clearing the area). Check out what happened in Portland and Seattle the last few years. The only caveat was if they had committed other crimes or had warrants

It's indefensible Ricky. Even if you believe that they deserved to be arrested, I can't get over the epic stupidity of surrounding a reporter live on the air and arresting them in a situation where people are reacting to police brutality. They might as well have all taken a dump in the street live on the air. It would've been less embarrassing.

They go back to their car and leave. It’s not rocket science.
In order to get to their car, they would have to break through the police lines or building that were surrounding them. Don't you think it'd be foolish to do either of those things? All the cops had to do was tell them where to go. They were basically begging them in order to be compliant.
