Any Vitello Update?

So we still don’t have any news regarding Vitello’s contract? I don’t understand the lack of transparency from this new administration? If the money is there, then announce a freaking deal and lock this guy up! Let the recruits know, let the potential transfers know and most importantly, let the fans know that our guy is on board for the long term. On the flip side, if nothing has been finalized by this point, I seriously worry about the university’s commitment to baseball! IMO, you have a guy that is a star in the making and as quickly and boldly as you can, you announce to the rest of the college baseball world that he is YOURS and you make a statement that Tennessee baseball isn’t playing second fiddle anymore. I can’t help but wonder if AD White wasn’t secretly hoping another team would come along, offer Vitello a job and take the whole situation out of his hands?
GBO!!

I watched a great fiddle player tonight in Greenville, bass player was killer too…we got this, let’s be positive.

GBO!!!

Brent Hubbs has a brief update in this week’s War Room on VQ. Those that have a subscription can read it there.

*Brent did note that neither side had concerns that a deal wouldn’t get done. Everyone expects it to get done.

Basically, there is nothing new other than what’s already been mentioned and discussed here, It is coming down to sorting out details regarding stadium renovations / enhancements and staff salary pay.

I’m reposting stuff from earlier in the week related to what’s been said about stadium renovations / enhancements:

From this week’s Volquest mailbag podcast:

As several have already brought up here, things take more time when it comes to stadium renovations, permits, hoops to jump through with local / state government bureaucratic stuff, timetable for renovations, etc. Both Ben and Brent Hubbs talked about this in today's Volquest mailbag podcast (From 30:10-34.10):

I’ll also add the Jul 6th GoVols247 podcast with Wes Rucker and Grant Ramey. They talk about the contract negotiations towards the end of the podcast (From 60:06-66:20). If you're interested, give it a listen.

Wes and Grant talk about facility enhancements – complicated in that this involves city/county/state zoning. If it was simple and just involved money, things would’ve been already done, but it’s not that simple because this negotiation also involves facility enhancements. Both sides want to get things done.

I put both podcasts in because all the Vol beat writers are talking about the same thing: The complicated nature of stadium enhancements involving local and state government bureaucratic stuff. These things take time to sort out.

Re: stadium enhancements: This may have already been brought up here or may have elsewhere - the next meeting of the state building commission is July 22nd. The next meeting agenda has not been put up yet. Anyone interested can see more information here: TN SBC Meeting Agendas. It’ll be interesting to see if the stadium among included the items on the July 22nd agenda.

With regards to an increase in staff salary pay, both sides are making this a priority.

Staff salary was brought up on Jayson Swain’s July 6th episode of The Swain Event (From: 1:54:07)

Towards the very end of Ben and Swain's discussion, it appears that Swain received more insight claiming that "The deal is all but done. Tony's been recruiting, Tony obviously wants more money for his staff...There's not been a detailed plan on how it's going to happen with the staff *…the stadium enhancements are a big deal of that as well, but the deal is about but done. “

*Keep in mind this is from earlier in the week, so progress on a detailed plan could have been made by now.

I realize this is a lot of info to take in, but I wanted to post it again with a few new things included for interested folks and for those not wanting to scroll back through previous posts.

FWIW, John Wilkerson was asked yesterday on WNML about his concern re: a new contract deal not being announced yet (on a scale from 1-10 with one being the lowest). His answer was a 1.

Personally, I’m not concerned with how things are going. Keeping it positive. Again, there are complexities and nuances involved with this negotiation. The new deal and contract extension will get done when it gets done. Coach V’s current contract runs through 2024,

Have a good Friday everyone. It's the weekend!

Wow, Gal, you should run this joint!! Post of the Week!!

Appreciate the kind words, @youcancallmeAl !

Glad to be a member of this Tennessee baseball community.

I like to gather as much info as possible, present it, and then let people take from it what they will. The process helps keep me from spiraling and jumping to my own conclusions. Hope this also helps others.

Yeah, great post Gal!

Thank you, @OldTimer ! Much appreciated.

I can't quote for some reason, because my account is messed up, but I'll just respond to @Franklin Pierce this way:

If a deal hasn't been finalized by this point, I seriously worry about Tony Vitello's commitment to Tennessee.

I'm not saying there is a reason for concern, but the longer this goes on I would be far more worried about Danny White's commitment to baseball than Vitello's commitment to Tennessee. Vitello is just trying to get what he needs to make this an annual Omaha contender. I can't blame him for that. Nearly every other SEC school is offering their coaches the bag. It's time we do the same.

I'd like to think there's more pressure and scrutiny on White to come through with his commitment, given what he publicly proclaimed in the KNS article and his earlier media availability presser. Scrutiny from all sides - the fan base, Plowman, Boyd, and donors.

Great summary Gal.

Thank you, Matt. Appreciate you reading.

I appreciate the posting of podcasts, @TN_gal and I listened to this one. What they said on the radio about zoning complicating things is wrong. First, it's already a baseball stadium. It's not being planned for a vacant piece of property that's currently used as a farm and zoned agriculture. It's an expansion of a current use (a baseball stadium with a larger capacity).

Second, if it's in the city (which it is), then county zoning does not apply. But since it's the State of Tennessee, it is state land, then city zoning does not apply. The state does not have its own zoning. In most regards, the state does not have to listen to local governments. For example, when citizens complained about the development of Cherokee Farms, their complaints went to the university because neither the city nor county could do one thing about it.

I too am looking forward to an improved stadium in the near future.

You are correct that Use as a Matter of Right zoning regulations do not apply. Obviously the use is established, and it is part of a University campus, where local zoning USE regulations most likely don't apply. And minimum setback from streets regulations obviously don't apply because the right field fence is literally right on the street ROW line. What the podcast was apparently referring to is the complications of moving a public street, and misspoke when they called it a zoning thing. They are using the terminology like amateurs, not accurately. The RR on the other side of the street most likely does come under the city's zoning regulations (assuming Knoxville has it's own regs and doesn't default to the county). If both sides and the owner of the road (City?, University/State?) all agree, and they move the road and occupy what is now RR property, and UT gains property, that action would have to be platted for land records at least. But I doubt any zoning regs would be violated for that, either. And, if there are public utilities buried in the existing ROW (water & sewer pipes), and would have to be moved if the road moves, that can be a complication, and an expensive one, but is not technically a zoning thing.

What the podcasters (and Tony in another one) were talking about is the complications in moving the road to make room for expansion and mistakenly calling it a zoning issue. But it is a real and complicated issue.

The university took over those streets from the city in the past few years, as well well as many other interior campus streets. Parking around LNS streets is now UT staff parking.
I have no doubt utilities are under the streets. I agree that’s an issue. A bigger issue is CSX- they aren’t going anywhere. Totally closing streets also must be looked at carefully because it cuts off routes for fire, EMS, police, etc. Thanks for the clarification- it’s too bad incorrect terminology was used to describe a complex situation.

Before Swain got that text stating the deal was done. He and Ben seemed to say the university was back tracking on what would be done to the stadium and when.

It came across as if the university had promised coach TV the moon while other coaching jobs where open, but where trying to pull the rug out from under him now.

Whom ever was listening to the show and sent the text, or had it sent, may have wanted that context of the conversation to end.

He was even worried about getting into trouble by giving out info that we are switching to morning football practices.

Soon! Go Vols!

If this is true, he’ll leave as soon as a big program does come calling.
